Rogue One James Earl Jones is Darth Vader in Rogue One

regarding how grotesque Vader looks, doesn't he still have one arm? I remember Anakin dragging himself up the hill in EP3 before they found him...at least I think so.

EDIT: nvm I forgot he lost an arm before ROTS.

I think that arm was already cybernetic because of Dooku chopping it off in AOTC.

Yeah, obvious troll as obvious as all heck, from that 1/10 rating to this kind of childishness. Ignored, carry on, too old for this nonsense.

And you need to relax and let people express their opinions, even if you disagree. There’s no need for that kind of talk.

Both films overindulge in callbacks for their own sake, instead of being a natural extension of the story, but I felt like it was more egregious in Rogue One. In TFA they were unnecessary but weren't top distracting. Every time R1 did it, it seemed liked the movie stopped just so you could bask it how clever and cool the filmmakers were to wink and nod at the past films. The way they brought up Obi-Wan in particular was poorly handled and groan-inducing.

I didn’t think so. It set up how Leia got to be involved in all of the madness at the end...and at the beginning of ANH as well.

Vader was easily the best part of the movie, and unfortunately not used nearly as much as I hoped beforehand. I hope we get a movie where we can really get some great action scenes out of him, to get the best of both worlds. The feel of the old Vader as a character, but with modern day technology not hindering them from what he can do physically.

If we didn't get it in this movie I'm kind of doubting we will get it at all though.

I wonder what kind of Vader movie we could get if they decided to do a solo film. I can see a film about him hunting down the last Jedi Knight in hiding (other than Yoda and Obi-Wan of course) and feeling conflict from knowing he is pretty much finishing off the Jedi for good with this last kill.

I know with the other standalone films, it would be hard to put Vader in the Young Han Solo for instance. A solo Boba Fett is certainly doable however.

Do an Apocalypse Now type film where an Imperial General goes rogue and Vader's sent to deal with him on some hellish planet.

As stated, ignoring the obnoxious troll person, but don't appreciate the troll tolerance & protection. Don't need to be remind us why everyone stopped coming here so much.

I said this after I got out of the theater. I pray there is another stand alone featuring Vader, if not a full fledged Vader film.

How? He's the villain. He's not meant to be sympathetic until RoTJ.

Spencer Wilding, who played Vader for the first scene, is the same height as David Prowse. He is former boxer and quite broad, so I don't think there is much of a difference there. They used Daniel Naprous,

Really? Hmm, interesting. He must be acting with taller people then. :)

I'm not sure how they would pull it off, but many films have been told with a villain/bad guy as the protagonist.

I may have plenty of complaints about the movie including characterization plus very little of vader. But that slaughter in the passageway was awesome. We got to see one by presuit vader in rots and this one was also brilliant. Only the corresponding soundtrack of 'Anakin's dark deeds' puts it on higher pedestal.

Also makes one realize that for all the heroics and sacrifices by the rebellion, they had hardly any chance of defeating the sith until luke came along.

It adds a layer of tragedy as well. This man was a hero once, he was capable of compassion and now he's a grotesque cripple. He came across like a combination of Frankenstein's creature and Mason Verger, living in Barad dur....it perfectly showed how far he's fallen.

I rewatched Episode III and I still don't find anything sympathetic about Anakin.

But that's another discussion.

Well I watched 6 seasons of The Clone Wars and found him pretty damn sympathetic.

The look of him in his castle, the way he's lit and shot, the way he walks towards Krennic [almost with a swagger] makes him badass in a way I haven't seen in years and THAT corridor scene - wow, I've been waiting to see Vader do something like that for, like, ever. Even as a kid all I heard was that Darth Vader was terrifying but I never really got it; well, Rogue One gave me that.

I think it was a perfect balance between the different fighting styles. This version didn't look like a geriatric and he didn't look like a hyperactive teenager-come-linefighter. He looked like a bloody tank.

As visually cool as Vader's last scene was, it felt out of place in this movie. He doesn't have much of a role in the story (doesn't he only have two scenes total?), so the fight scene (if you can call it that) comes off as an exploitive slasher scene. It doesn't feel justified within the narrative, just blatant fan service. A scene like it would've worked in RotS, or a more Vader-centric plot, but along with the deaths of Rogue squad (which were rote and felt almost-forced), the ending was jarring & tone-deaf, and didn't mesh well with the rest of the film. It also didn't help that they kept bashing you over the head with "hope" this and "hope" that.

My main problem with the reference was just how clumsily it was written, and how flat Jimmy Smits was in his performance, not that I'm blaming him. His lines in this film were worse than they were in the prequels.

Did we really need an explanation for Leia's involvement, though? Isn't it enough that she's Bail Organa's daughter, and it's reasonable to assume she would be a part of the Rebellion? Putting the Tantive IV at the scene of the battle really stretches credulity at her "diplomatic mission" excuse in ANH. How did she expect to be able to pick up Kenobi when she knows she's being chased by the Empire?

I agree that the only purpose of the scene was to look cool. Then again, it sure looked cool.

That's why I think ultimately it would've been a LOT more effective if they had used a scene like that where he tore through our protagonists, not just some nobodies. Practically all of them died anyway and that would have totally driven the point home, with Vader being able to simply walk through K2, Chirrut and Saw, assisted by a full compliment of rebel soldiers and slaughtering them at will.

Yup, that diplomatic mission ******** doesnt hold water since she made escape infront of vader. Anyway, cgi leia looks like bad case of botox. Of all the times we have seen the original trio in new movies, han and chewbacca entering into falcon gave me true feelings alone

Give me a Darth Vader movie. Now.

Seriously. This film was our first step to redeeming Vader after Lucas turned him into a whiny little emo b***h in the prequels. Now we need a new film where voice modulated, breath apparatus Vader is either the main character or the main villain.

I remember a comic book from a while back where Vader crash lands on a hostile planet and has to kill his way back to the Empire. Something like that could make for a great movie.

And it needs to be done soon. JEJ turns 86 in January. There is no way to replace him. I was watching Empire on TV yesterday and couldn't help but notice the little inflections in his voice. Just little changes in tone and direction that you cannot replace. Impossible.
