Take away the tattoos, all the bling bling jewelry (it makes him look like a pimp or a rapper), and bare chest look, and this would be a good design.

Well hopefully in the film they will present a Joker that justifies his look, I love the look as long as it seems appropriate for the character and it's not just a Ledger Joker in a pimp outfit.

as a matter of fact, i remember people saying heath's voice is a rip off of jack's back when TDK's trailers came out....

Jack was basically using his own natural voice. Heath's Joker voice sounded nothing like Nicholson.

I wonder how Ayer feels about working with method actors for two movies in a row. Shia cut his face, removed a tooth, and went the entire shoot without a shower or a bath. Jared sends his cast mates weird gifts and stays in character even when the camera isn't rolling.

I wonder if the grillz were included in order to do something special with his mouth, since they opted out of the fixed grin. Well, that and Ayer's affinity for the "gangster" aesthetic in general.

Leto has pretty small, uneven teeth. Putting thick red lipstick on his natural smile and calling it a day may not have packed a punch. But if they just gave Leto normal-looking prosthetics, then you run the risk of it looking like Jared Leto in comically large false-teeth. I remember manips of the first Joker picture where people tried to make his teeth look normal, and it looked awful. Like Jim Carrey in The Mask.

I like Ledger's aesthetic, but I do prefer Leto's, even though I wish there wasn't any tats or grillz.

Using the grills is genius imo. They accentuate his smile without too much effort from him or the need for prosthetics, fit in well with his flamboyant gangster look, make him look more menacing (just imagine getting bitten by this Joker ...) and they also hint at a quite violent history between him and Batman. They make his appearance way more interesting.
