He really does. Just as much, if not just a taaaaaaddd bit more than Heath.

Either way, you're looking at another definitive interpretation. Just like with Romero, Nicholson & Ledger, Leto's gonna knock it way out the park.

Can't wait! :D

Overselling Joker, as usual. I hope it doesn't backfire.

I honestly don't see how it's overselling. But fair enough, I suppose.

How is it overselling? Even if he's in the movie alot less than people think, it will wet their appetite for more.

Joker has Black Panther like screen time. Yet, he's getting Iron Man like promotion.

that may be, but to the general audience he is the one character they know - everyone knows who the joker is - comicbook movie fan or not. some of them may have heard of harley quinn, but the rest of the skwad is an unknown.

Few words for you all : Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs. He had less the 20 minutes of screen time (18 I think) and yet his is the character that everyone remembers from that movie. The man won an Oscar for a lead male role with less the 20 minutes of screen time.

It's not uncommon for big name actors or roles to get a lot of time in trailers and such. Just recently, you could have seen every scene Scarlett Johansson had in Hail,Ceaser in the trailer.

Disagree with that, I feel like they are promoting him as he appears in the film.

First Trailer: They build up to his appearance at the end, with the laugh, and then the exclamation point of the trailer with "I'm just gonna hurt ya..." Makes people intrigued and excited to see him. ESPECIALLY after Ledger's performance, Joker is a huge character in DC canon. And the reason Joker is so important is his relationship to Batman, who is the biggest character in their roster. People are excited to see this new portrayal. Obviously, they are going to promote that in the concept art and posters.

The next trailers show really quick clips of him and one liners. They don't really show how he fits into the story, the story that the trailers tell is that of the Suicide Squad group, with just enough Joker to get people enticed and wanting more. That's what his role in the film will be. A way to introduce the character to audiences without having to base an entire film around his relationship to Batman, show enough of him and Batman to get people wanting more, while building up his character (and relationship to Harley) so that there is adequate tension built up by the time he and Batman really square off. I think it's brilliant. How else are they supposed to promote him?

People have huge expectations of the character, and also some people are so stuck on Ledger's brilliant portrayal that they aren't going to be willing to accept a new take, so Leto really has his work cut out for him. He has to give a performance on the level of Ledger, Nicholson, Hammil, Romero, and still carve his own niche, offer something unique to this Universe they are selling.

That's why the tattoos and the cartel/rock star image. This is a Joker who loves his role, who does all these crazy things because he genuinely gets a kick out of it. The funniest thing in the world to him is having a big, serious, pissed off guy in a bat suit with all these gadgets and training, relentlessly coming at him, just getting more and more pissed off every time. Joker can't get enough of it, the absolute absurdity of it. One of the best scenes in Dark Knight was Joker laughing in Batman's face because this guy in a batsuit was getting so worked up and pissed off and there was nothing he could do "with all his strength".

Ledger's Joker was an anarchist who was out to prove a point about human nature in the midst of chaos, he hangs his head out the window like a happy dog, just taking in the chaos around him.

How do you compete with that? Make him flashier (the tats and clothes and grill), make him more unpredictable, more manic, he's not out to prove a point, he's doing it because of the thrill it gives him, because it is freaking hilarious and he can't get enough of it. From what I've heard of his Method acting, and seen from the imagery of the trailers, it looks like Leto is doing a good job pulling that off, you can see it in his eyes and face when he's blasting the machine gun, getting an absolute thrill during the car chase, when he's got somebody tied up and he's about to hurt them really REALLY BAD. This is a scary MoFo, and he is gonna stand up there amongs all the great DC villain portrayals. That's one thing DC has going for them is their villains!

The Joker can make a much bigger splash/impact in a fairly short amount of screen-time than most characters could with even more screen-time. He's essentially the definition of a scene stealer and showman.

I'm definitely not concerned about them over-selling and under-delivering when it comes to The Joker.

Kinda like how in the new killing joke movie, batgirl gets way more screen time then joker, but the only thing you'll remember from that story is joker

Anyone mind grabbing some gifs from the "Hurt You Really Really Bad" clip? Quite a few great shots in there.

Precisely. It's not overselling when the character is insanely popular and people are greatly anticipating seeing said character.

They're (no pun intended) playing the cards they have. If I had the Joker in my movie you could bet your ass I'd be showing him off every chance I get.

I know I shouldn't be surprised, but man is this a refreshing thread. Far more positive discussion about Leto's Joker here than most of the places I've been checking out.

I've already seen posts from people who want the Batfleck movie to be acclaimed more than TDK, to make more money than any other Batman movie and to make everybody admit that Affleck is the best Batman evah and who will be unsatisfied with the movie if it won't achieve all those things. I kid you not.

I want that... dont we all want the next to be the best one yet?
Id love to have something that is unequivocally better than Mask of the Phantasm... that would be quite the achievement..

When this film was announced I was skeptical over the idea of another Joker after Heath but when I saw how they did it with Leto I was thrilled.

To me, it's more important that this is a different take on the iconic character, not someone trying to remake Ledge or Nicholson, something new and fresh that fits with the theme.

I even like the tattoos, it give him a bit of depth. Like he's aware of his "damaged" psyche but rather than hide it, he flaunts it! Which is PERFECT for the Joker.

im a little worried, i feel like Leto's sounds a bit too much like Heath's, is it just me? i just feel like he's using that kind of some tone, maybe once i hear it in the movie its gonna be much better.

Not trying to be a prick but that line of thought doesn't sit well with me. Heath's performance was good but he was not the be all end all of the character and I hate when people act like his performance was untouchable.

Agreed

But will you consider the movie a failure, if it will be a good movie, but not the best Batman movie ever?

Seriously there is some sort of cult going on with Heath's Joker. I find it ironic how when he was cast everyone was acting like Nicholson was untouchable and then Heath's fans were like 'oh you were wrong! Heath did great" and now they are doing the same to people who believe in Jared

Same here-- I mean I loved TDK and his performance but people act like that is the pinnacle of Joker performances and the best we'll ever get. Fortunately a lot of people have been won over as more footage was released and are willing to give him a chance. I think most of the naysayers are unhappy with so much of the movie and there isn't really anything left to convince them otherwise. If the realistic version of him from Nolan is what they enjoyed the most, they can just rewatch that.

That is exactly how it is for most people.

You misunderstand

I wasn't meaning that Heath was the be all joker. I loved Nicholsons performance but that didn't mean I wasn't willing to see anew interpretation in TDK

A character that has been around for 75 years is going to have more than one iconic portrayal, Hamill, Nicholson, Ledger

However this came so relatively soon after Ledgers stellar performance I was honestly wondering if they would simply try to recreate it or something. I had no idea if anyone would be up to the task of putting a new spin on The Joker, I wasn't even sure how it could be done. I had the exact same concerns about Afflecks performance as Batman

I was definitely stunned by Jareds look and just from the images was mostly scratching my head, but the first trailers convinced me that I was dead wrong in believing that people would be unable to find a fresh take.

In this world where Hollywood is constantly rebooting with various levels of success, some very unoriginal is if really that hard to understand that I was worried one of my favorite villains might be handeled badly? There will be other Jokers after Leto and I'll always be worried about whether they will do the character justice, I'm just excited that this go around looks unique and interesting

Saw TDK again the other day....find it very hard for people to view another Joker better than that.

It just had too many things coming together at the perfect time. Nolan at his best, the time we were living in, etc.

I think we'll always be accepting of different interpretations though. Thats a good thing.

Its just that performance has reached has such an iconic status that its going to take a helluva lot for the majority to find one "better"

But who knows. Maybe Affleck, Johns, Leto can create something great in The Batman movie. That will be good enough and we get to see this Joker twice. Just have to keep expectations in check in regards to it maybe not being as good as TDK Joker.
