It's a fascinating case study. WB most likely was afraid to put out a product that was too dark (after the backlash), but in the process they forgot what this movie was about AND that a movie can be dark as long as it's GOOD. They broke the movie trying to fix it. I'd love to be a fly on the wall at WB because their decisions are baffling.
If the movie had been budgeted closer to Deadpool, they wouldn't have interfered.
All the positive reactions to the trailers got them giddy for money despite Deadpool being R-rated. They probably saw a chance to beat Fox's movie by having it be PG-13 and chopped it to pieces.
That seems to be the continuing problem with all their movies. They keep making reactionary decisions to what is going on around them instead of asking what they actually want.
SupReturns got us MOS
Marvel tone got us BvS
GoTG tone got us Suicide Squad tone.
Wonder Woman might escape it just cause they're actually leading Marvel/Fox in this one.
The Rams analogy is pretty adept. Especially when you consider they cling to the past. The game has long passed Fisher's offensive and defensive philosophy by. And rather than adapt, he continues to try run heavy, smash mouth football. But rather than fire him, the ownership slaps some new cosmetic paint on the team, moving them to LA, and hopes for different results.
he is a hugely talented actor who says stuff a completely talentless actor would say. He chooses interesting parts in interesting movies. He was in some of my favs - American Psycho, Fight Club etc. The guy is committed, has charisma and talent and one of the most deserved Oscars in recent years. I have no doubt he is good and I don't think they could have found someone better for this part
