Having just seen the movie, I think this love sick puppy dressed in ugly gangster garb was not the Joker. I'm not sure how much story was missing from the cuts, but what they left it gave us the worst on screen version of the Joker, and one of the worst versions in general.
He had not got one memorable or menacing moment. I wouldn't be at all scared to be left in a room with this guy. Just kiss his bling rings on his hand and you're fine. He was completely unnecessary to the plot. The back story with Harley was rushed and didn't feel organic at all. There was no sense of anticipation for the character to return when he wasn't on the screen, in fact I forgot about him when he wasn't on screen. That says a lot considering I was watching Harley most of the time.
They butchered the Joker/Harley relationship. Not just from Joker's perspective of his sole goal being to simply be reunited with her. But also from Harley's perspective. When Enchantress showed what each of the Squad wanted most in the world, they showed Harley envisioning her looking normal, in a normal house, with normal looking babies, and married to a tender loving normal looking Jared Leto.
That left an awful taste in my mouth. It implies Harley doesn't love Joker exactly the way he is and would rather he be normal than a freaky clown. When Harley fantasizes about settling down with Joker, this is the sort of thing she should be seeing;
Ayer has not got a clue about the Joker, or the Joker/Harley relationship. Just awful. Leto was totally forgettable.
