The scene with him laughing in his circle of knives and **** reminded me of the pretentious BS that Snyder tries to pass off in his movies as "creative" and "deep."
It was just the Joker laughing around knives. So he's crazy? Yeah, got that. It didn't develop his character any. It was just weird.
That was a major issue with this Joker. They were blatantly trying way too hard to make him seem edgy and scary, and worst of all failing miserably. All those quick cuts, and pinky glowing lighting, and blurry imagery of him like in the hurt you really really bad scene with Harley. It was like 'Ooooh look how crazy this Joker is with all this trippy imagery and lighting'.
Somebody - I presume Ayer - sat down and seriously thought that this would be a good motivation for the Joker to have in a movie. The Joker.
If it was then it proves Ayer has no grasp on the character at all. Joker wouldn't be pining for Harley, or putting time and effort into hunting her down unless he wanted something off her.
But this was played simply as him wanting his gf back. Joker was neutered into a love sick puppy.
It nonetheless is one note and safe. Neither which the Joker should be.
Exactly. Not to mention flies in the face of how Joker treats Harley.
To me, this Joker was off-putting in a bad way, both in his look and his performance. Ledger and Nicholson were magnetic and really fun to watch. This Joker felt like a weird creep and I wouldn't really wanna watch him for a whole movie. He was not scary or threatening. That's just how I feel, unfortunately. I had really high hopes for Leto.
I agree. Not a single iota of menacing vibe off him. Not one memorable moment. No wow factor. He was just....there. This was not a screen time issue because everyone here agreed that a lack of screen time is not an issue to provide a memorable good performance, as Lecter's 15 minutes in The Silence of the Lambs was frequently referenced.
But Leto didn't deliver anything memorable in any of his scenes. The quality just wasn't there.
Disagree. Joker is supposed to be funny and charismatic. That's part of the reason why he's resonated with so many people, and why he's considered to be one of the greatest villains of all time.
Joker is definitely meant to be funny. Whether its some camp humor like pulling a long barrel gun out of his pants like Nicholson, or more dark humor like the pencil trick in TDK. Or just being generally quirky funny and witty e.g.
Gambol: "You think you can steal from us and just walk away?"
Joker: "Yeah"
Bruce: "Let me tell you about this guy I know, Jack. Mean kid, bad seed, hurt people"
Joker: "I like him already"
Letoker was completely unfunny, and his attempts at being witty fell flat. "Ooooh this big hunka hunka wants to meet you, Harley". Groan.
