The Rise of Skywalker JJ Abrams is Writing and Directing Episode IX

Loved JJ's camera work in Force Awakens

Me too... he always had this weird Batman '66 Villains meets Wes Craven shooting Ghostface vibe, when capturing Kylo.

That is a nice shot there showing what he can do.

I love the way Force Awakens looks and was shot. Abrams did a great job of not forcing CG down our throats as a crutch to tell his story like George Lucas did with the prequels.

Deep down that's a big part of what people don't like about the prequels. They look and feel fake. There's a disconnect. Sure there's the clunky acting. But the environments look too clean. They look too static. There's a disconnect with the human actors and their surroundings.

Abrams at least had the strong foresight to create a lot of the story for Force Awakens onset and within the camera rather than in post-production. The CG that is done in post also looks really good and enhances what's onscreen rather than overwrites it.

Like it's OK to have extras in costume on set instead of rendering them in CG later like Lucas did with the troopers.

Here's an example of why I hate the prequels:

Abrams has his work cut out for him after the disappointing movie that is TLJ

With the [BLACKOUT]'main villain' out of the way as such [/BLACKOUT] be interesting how they create a conclusion to this as I think there is a danger of potentially just replaying the themes of Return of the Jedi, if they are not too careful.

Back when JJ was first picked for Episode 9 I was extremely disappointed, but now I'm sort of relieved to have him back. Yes there are a lot better directors out here, and I'm fully convinced that he'll make a dumb, surface-level, spectacle-focused, plot-free movie that doesn't even come close to finishing the trilogy in a satisfying way, but at least it should be fun to watch and feel more like Star Wars than whatever Rian Johnson was trying to do.

I hope against all hope that he is just a placeholder and we get another director of the radical flavor of Rian Johnson. Waititi or Coogler, maybe.

Funny. When TLJ finished, the first thought that came to my mind was "Now finaly, here is Star Wars". The saga should be about the mysticism, surprises and new interesting planets. All things i felt were lacking in Force Awakens and Rogue One.

I franky hope Disney doesn't go the James Bond route of reacting to the immediate reaction of fans for Episode IX. When EON did that with On her Majesty's Secret Service, we got Diamonds are Forever, which was more crowd pleasing. Fastforward a couple of decades and DaF is almost unwatchable, while OHMSS is considered the pinacle of what a James Bond film can be.

Agreed. Ultimately, I think Episode 9 will be exactly what people say they want right now, which is another safe pass like TFA. It won't challenge the audience, but it won't have much to say either. It's what Abrams does with his films. Honestly, Episode 8 was the one I felt had the most potential, and it lived up to it for me. I doubt Episode 9 will be nearly as good. I just see TFA level quality, which is good...but for Star Wars I don't want just, good. I want something more. I understand TFA was made to get people back on board with Star Wars. The PT hurt its stock, so TFA was something familiar to remind us why we love it. Fine, it did its job. I just don't want that for 2 out of 3 movies.

So I see that Chris Terrio is co-writing this. I can't wait for this scene:

Rey: Save... Leia...

Kylo: WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT NAME?!!!!!

I feel like the mysticism should be a backdrop for the fun space adventure, not the other way around. A lot of TLJ's more Star Wars-feeling storylines (finding the hacker, infiltrating the Star Destroyer, the Resistance ship outrunning the First Order) were cut short and cheapened by having far too many scenes with Luke pouting on an island and all the Force stuff. I've always seen the Force as a part of the Star Wars universe, but not the main focus point. Even ESB (which was much more Force-focused than ANH) never lost sight of the adventure. I felt like everything interesting in TLJ got cut short and it just became a mystical thing.

I do understand that there is a large group of fans that wants the Force stuff deeply explored, I'm just more into the adventure and sci-fi aspect with just a little taste of mysticism here and there.

There's something slightly erotic about this pic. I don't know why. :funny:

I like the adventure element too, but here's the thing. Isn't that something that other science fiction franchises can give us too? That's why i'm more into the mystical elements. No other franchise can give us something like the Force or Lightsabers.

Also, there frankly weren't all that many scenes on Luke's island in comparison to the other storylines. In fact, many fans are complaining about Canto Bight (which i frankly didn't mind since it expanded the world and was thematicaly connected).

Yeah, cos a man strangling a woman always gets me going as well.... :csad:

You suddenly forget what forum you're on? :o

The production name for Episode 9 is supposedly "Black Diamond.

Fantha Tracks can exclusively reveal that Episode IX is being produced under the business name of Carbonado Industries (UK) Ltd. A business first intended for the Solo production – for obvious carbon freezing reasons. The working title for Episode IX will be Black Diamond – the common name of Carbonado. From Wikipedia:

Carbonado, commonly known as the “black diamond“, is the toughest form of natural diamond. It is an impure form of polycrystalline diamond consisting of diamond, graphite, and amorphous carbon. It is found primarily in alluvial deposits in the Central African Republic and in Brazil. Its natural colour is black or dark grey, and it is more porous than other diamonds.

Black Diamonds are renowned for their luminescence…

We can only hope that means some wonderful luminous beings may return for Episode IX. As Making Star Wars reported, on 15th December JJ Abrams pitched Bob Iger the story plans for Episode IX. Production begins in 2018 for a December 20th 2019 release. The name is the start of the journey, we await to see what Episode IX will become…

Update:
Our friends over at Bleeding Cool have conducted their own additional research, in a similar vein to their work on Foodles / Avco as detailed above. They have found a staff member listing Lucasfilm / Black Diamond as their employer during early 2017. Take the link to check out their findings.

I agree to an extent, i feel that Abrams might actually be able to come out and give us an amazing movie. He saw the liberties Rian took with VIII, so maybe he will take some risks. I mean these are his creations, and seeing where Ren and Rey are right now, its interesting to see how he concludes this trilogy.

JJ has already submitted his IX script to Disney for review.

I have nothing against Rian as a person but I'm relieved he isn't directing IX and JJ is back. With the backlash over TLJ I wouldn't be upset if he is pulled from the new trilogy project.

I see the potential he has to work with certainly, I just don't know if JJ is the guy who will ultimately take the story where it needs to. I hope I am wrong.

I mean I'm a little worried that maybe he isn't able to, but I'm just hoping that maybe because of them being his characters, he knocks it out the park. One thing tho that I hate is that the Knights of Ren weren't included in VIII. I mean they could have been a huge part of this. But hell, what can we do now

They can still have a role now. It does make a lot of sense for them to appear now that [BLACKOUT]Kylo Ren has taken control of the First Order. It would be fun if you had half the First Order unsatisfied by Ren leading, while he himself would be using the knights as a way to solidify his reign.[/BLACKOUT]
