Oh good lord. It's simple. If you like Marvel more then fine, if you like DC more then fine. But this is not some stupid war about who's better. Facts are facts, DC/JL have bigger names who do not need the build that some people here seem to think they need.

Like stated before, Marvel had spider-man, hulk and wolverine as their biggest in pop culture before 2008. Wolverine was not even as popular as the other two, and spider-man isn't in the Avengers. That leaves just the incredible Hulk. They didn't have to release another Hulk movie after Norton left. It was easy for them to throw Ruffalo into the role right into The Avengers. The others? Not so much. They needed their backstories told beforehand or a small cameo.

If my parents have no idea who X-Men are, or who Wolverine or Thor is...yet they know who Wonder Woman, Flash & Aquaman are?? Then that's telling me something. My parents for example, represent the general audience. Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, Hulk, Wonder Woman, Flash. Aquaman may be the only one that they know ONLY by name and not by anything else. If you showed them a picture, they wouldnt know who it was. Maybe now they know Iron Man because of Downey.

The point is, out of the original 7 members of JL..about 5 of them are known. And WB may be moving ahead with a team that uses just 5 members. Avengers, prior to 08' had 1 or 2 out of 7 that were known. They needed the build up badly AND it was the first team-up movie of its kind. So it was very appropriate, but ppl know the formula now.

End of. It shouldnt even be a debate. It has nothing to do with "oh u live here! so u dont know what its like in Australia! or in Japan!" people from those places just said that a lot of JL heroes are known over there. When u say "general audience" ur not counting every single child and adult on the planet LOL. It means not just the fanboys, but the regular movie-goers. Your always going to find kids who are a bit shut off from pop culture for whatever reason, but we're talking the majority here.

Superman and Batman are the only true 'icons', imo. Even their supporting characters are incredibly well known. Lois, Lex, Gordon, Alfred, Joker, Robin, Catwoman, Supergirl.

Nah dude Wonder Woman is cultural icon because she has become associated with feminism. Little girls know two things growing up barbie and wonder woman as signs of feminism.

Nah, Wolverine was already well known before the movies. They did boost his popularity, though.

To comic book readers, yes. To the general public? I don't think so. Especially compared to Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Wonder Woman and the Hulk. They would've been the top 5, in terms of public awareness.

I still believe that Iron Man became really popular because of Robert Downey Jr.. I think that the movies still would've been a success, but I don't think they'd have as much impact without him.

Don't know, I was interested in Wolverine way before I was into comics. I remember my friends and I used to call him "X-Man". He isn't as well-known as the top 5, but I think he was well-known before the movies.

Speaking from down under most people seems to know the likes of Bats, Supes, Spidey, WW, Hulk, Flash etc, plus Xmen but mostly Wolverine. Iron Man, Ghost Rider, Thor, Captain America range from some awareness to completely unknown prior to 2008. Hell, the Avengers to most people was a 60's TV series and a crappy Ralph Finnes movie.

That's been my experience too. Especially the part about the Avengers.

Yes, he was, but I was just comparing him to the others. He didn't even come close. Although, now he's probably overtaken WW and Hulk.

Oh, okay. I see what you mean, and yeah I agree about WW but not sure about Hulk after The Avengers boosted his popularity. Wolverine has his own movie next year so we'll see.

These days if younger people didn't watch Justice League, they dont really know much about Wonder Woman unfortunately. You know the name like with Captain America, but that's it.

Her name and image is still recognisable. I doubt that'll ever change.

If you ask the average person to name a female superhero, most people would probably say "Wonder Woman". Maybe "Supergirl".

I imagine them saying Catwoman, even though she's more neutral it comes to the matter of good/bad.

She'd be the 3rd choice. There's no doubt that they would be the most known to the general public. Funny thing is if it was just comic book characters in general, Lois Lane would probably be above all of them.

I was wondering whether or not Mary Jane would be in front of Lois, but I think you're right.

Hah, I was watching the Roast of Roseanne Barr on Comedy Central and they have parody posters of her around the stage. One of them is a Roseanne as a retro Wonder Woman.

Well she is a love interest for Batman, but she's also a thief/hero. Mary-Jane and Lois Lane don't live double lives, they're just normal women.

So:

Lois
Mary-Jane

Who's Third?
