A combination would be plausible if I thought he was sane enough to have once had a wife.

lol yea. It just popped back onto my CP and I thought I had to have some of that!

I think the scars were like a punishment. I think of Joker as a pro bank robber sorta like Mr Blonde in Resovoir Dogs, turning too many jobs into blood baths and bringing to much heat onto his "employers". So one day they had enough and had some boys stab him up and slash his face and leave him for dead. Who knows, maybe he has stab scars all over his body not just his face.

One thing for sure, no one is ever going to get the story from him - he's crazier than a ****bug.

Go ask a crazy homeless guy how he ended up homeless, and you will get the idea.... getting straight answers from crazy people is harder than trying to get them from drunks even.

I still think he would of told Bats the truth if he didn't interrupt him with the ol' Bat blade thingys! I mean, if he is going to tell anyone it would surely be his good pal Batman right?

Nah, here is what he was thinking:

Yeah, I think this is approximately how this happened, though I think whoever scarred him was responsible for only half his scars. I also suspect he was stealing from the mob, since he makes a comment to Batman about not "going back to ripping off mob dealers."

Anyway, he made a gang mad, someone kidnapped him, stabbed him in the cheek and then dragged the knife down his face below his lip, unintentionally giving him half a chelsea grin. The Joker escapes somehow, sees himself in a mirror, realizes that he has what looks like half a smile on his face and then finishes the job. It's been noted before, but look at the Joker's scars. One is messy, the other looks neat and curled like a deliberate attempt to create a smile.

I honestly think its something less severe than what you guys are saying,not that these arent cool ideas because they are! The way he is constantly going after batman just for fun, because in a way he sees batman like hismelf, makes me think entirely different. Im guessing he is just an attention ****e. Something sappy like, his wife left him for someoen else, or abandoned as a kid. he carves up his own face and goes loony, just to cry out for attention so that all eyes are on him

It is also possible that his father curved the messier side of his face while years later he met his wife and he curved a smile on his face. But the only problem with this is that the cuts look fresher unless they didn't heal well, because during the party scene the Joker's scar looks like its been burnt.
