The Dark Knight Know how i got these scars?...

After seeing it three times--go ahead, be jealous--I really think the scars were somehow given to him by dogs.
There's just so much dog imagery in the movie, so many lines about dogs, allusions to dogs. Even in the end, he's using three dogs.
Just my theory, but I think dogs scarred him.

I think the dog imagery has more to do with the joker being like a dog himself. He even says his MO is like a dog chasing a car.

ps I thought that scene at the end with him standing with the 3 rotties was friggen sweet.

I know alot of people were sceptical about the scars before the film, but Im glad he had them and the lip licking and smacking was even more unnerving than I thought.

i don't think both stories r true, but i do think the one about his father was true. that was more believeable.

I think you can believe what you want, but we'll never actually find out which one is true, if any of them.

Wanna know how I got my scars?

Well, a long, long time ago, there was a little boy. And this little boy idolized his father. His father was a real joker, y'see. And then one day, for kicks, his father decided to rob the guys he worked for and he ran away. When the guys he worked for couldn't find him, they found me instead. They told me it was nothing serious. When daddy dearest refused to come back home, they decided to send him a message.

Well... my mother always did love my smile.

You wanna know how I got these scars? Well, a long long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I tried out for the part of Anakin Skywalker. George Lucas said I was too good of an actor for one of his movies, so I became sad that I lost the part. George looked at me and, with his lightsaber he cut a smile in my face, saying "Why so serious?"

hahaha... that's a good one.

I'm not sure how many comic fans are on this discussion but I vaguely recall the joker once stating that if He had to have a past he'd rather it be multiple choice, also that every day he remembers things differently.

You wana know how I got these scars? Well I was on the Superherohype, Looking for spoilers....But nothing was accurate. I went on a rant going a little crazier than usual, and some kids just told me to chill, than he says to me Why So Serious? I couldn't stop laughing! So I carved my face and now I'm always smiling!

I liked how he came up with different reasons, similar to the comics where his origin is different depending on who's telling it. Because for the Joker, it really doesn't matter how he became the Joker, since once he became the Joker, he was... the Joker.

You wanna know how I got these scars? You see, i grew up on a farm, constantly feeding the pigs left overs from the night before, well one day my sister was no where to be found to help me feed the pigs, after i had fed them, i screamed for my sister, but my daddy came running, he had gone a little nuts from the harvest bein set on fire. he had me feed my sister to those pigs, and he comes at me, with his sickle, and just cuts my face a little asking me WHY SO SERIOUS? WHY SO SERIOUS?

Exactly. All we actually know is that he has a deep hatred for his father. That's all we know. Other than that, his origin is a mystery, and that's the way it needs to be.

I found it interesting that when he told Gambol the WSS story it was with his father and how it was his fault for the scarring . At the party when he comes in looking for Dent and he goes down the line of guests and he gets to the older gentlemen and tells him he is like his father and he hates him.

I'm begining to think he changed the stories based on the people he told for example: He tells Gambol the abusive father story, well Gambol is a male criminal and most male criminals get their start from abusive parents, besides that most men have some sort of issue with their father, then he tells the story of the neglective wife to Rachael cause she's a beautiful woman and most likely about to be someone's wife.

totally agreed, I really did enjoy his creepy stories on how he got them, each one was really instense and badass!

Personally, I don't think there's any truth to either one of 'em.

"If I had a past I'd prefer it to be multiple choice"
Its definately made up, they said the Killing Joke was a major influence.

the why so serious story had me on the edge the whole time

When he first told the story to Gambol, I was literally on the edge of my seat! The music, the story, the expressions, and tension, it was an absolutely perfect scene.

My onlt problem with that scene is you dont "see" the Joker cut Gambol. They just stay focused on his henchman. I would have prefered a far away shot from behind the Joker and you just see his are quickly jerk and Gambol fall.

I believe they were taking the point of view from 'The Killing Joke':

Joker: "Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another... If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!"

Bingo, that was one of my favorite things about I liked the movie. The Joker being vauge about his past. I dont like the conclusive origin like Burton gave him. I like the Joker as some Anonymous nightmare that crawled out from under a rock one day.

All of his stories were flat-out lies, I think, but probably his father and his wife had something to do with his descent into madness, that's why he uses them in his stories - they were part of his "little push".

I also don't believe they were connected to his past. When he's telling the first one to Gambol he turns to his thug and says "and.......why so serious?" then kills Gambo. It just looked like he was making up the story all along and was thinking of adding more when he just thought f-it and killed Gambol. Its obvious something traumatic did happen to him but I think it caused scarring on one side of his face. He then carved the other side so now he's always smiling.

I liked the ambiguity of the scar stories. It was ultimately so much more rewarding than finding out his true origins. It reminded me of the Killing Joke, showing that he may not have a very good grasp of the past or what actually happened.

"Ya wanNa kNow hOw i got these scars?? Well, i was in a bar, sEe? And I met this woman...and we Hit iT off pretty wEll...we WeNt back to hEr plaCe and she sAt on mY faCe aNd I gAve her oRal pleAsure...heR name Was RosiE O'DonnEl!"
