Well, in all fairness, Wolverine and Gambit have worked together in the comics before. They even had their own miniseries. You can still be a loner but team up with people for a common goal. You don't even have to like each other.
But he could also play a prominent role in the movie without being a sidekick.
OK, I see the new page since yesterday, but I think I was a bit harsh with my post, so I feel like correcting. In the comics, I agree. In fact it was 'Victims' that got me into Gambit in the first place. But, I doubt Wolverine 2 will allow secondary characters to become any more prominent than Wolverine 1. So, while I'm not what you'd call a fangirl, I'd prefer my Gambit equal to the main character(s), now that it's pretty much clear that the casting was fine.
On the other hand, Wolverine, he's fine on his own. I don't see why he needs a partner. In the comics, you can either make it a proper team-up story, which 'Wolverine' is not - or you can have multiple POVs, which I doubt the movie will. I don't think the Fox films are bad, but they are definitely not there to please comics fans. I doubt they'd make Wolverine share.
I think it is more fun when they dont like each other, and try to be better than the other one, but Gambit probably end up being more of a sidekick than a partner
I'd prefer they tried that with Deadpool, and not Wolvie. DP and Gambit are not so well known by the general audience. In the comics, Deadpool talking to himself and to his current opponents is fine. In a movie, he might just need a partner, even if he narrates. That might also save Deadpool from being turned handsome. Although, I'd probably like that partner to be Outlaw - a strong female character, the way she was in Agent X. Or maybe both her and Weasel.
I really do hope we get a Deadpool movie. Assuming, of course, that Reynolds can have his way with the portrayal. As for the rest, I'd prefer X4-6. Since they make a First Class (trilogy), I'd rather just keep an open mind, and hope it won't be just for teenagers.
