Sequels Lauren Shuler Donner talks X-Men: First Class, Gambit and Deadpool

Fox may begin releasing an X-Men related movie more than once every three years. The next Wolverine movie may not be released for another 3 years, but that doesn't mean First Class or another X-Men related property can't be released during that time.

One could hope. Lord knows FOX needs some successful films... personally I'd love more X-films. Call me unpicky but I haven't hated one yet.

I agree. The studio could use more X-Men related titles to fill the gaps of what could have been its other successful superhero franchises that have now fallen by the wayside.

Fox needs to make sure these films are enjoyable to the public though. Like not making First Class an annoying teenerbopper film like they made Fantastic Four into a sitcom.

One can hope. The script writer worries me, but I hear he's a huge comic fan.

Yeah, that can go either way.

I hope they attach a somewhat decent director as well.

EDIT: I just checked on wikipedia. Zak Penn was offered the chance to direct in 2007? Oh god.

Sadly I see Deadpool and Magneto falling through, not Gambit. Why? Pretty boy protagonist, and Lauren loves him. What Lauren wants, Lauren gets.

Funny. Of the three potential solos, I'd have said Gambit was least likely. why? Because he's Gambit; he's always getting screw over be it in the comics or in the movies.

When asked about Magneto and Deadpool she just kind of fluffed it off... but when Gambit came up she gushed.

I didn't get that impression. she seemed non-committal on all questions. Just a variation on "we'll see".

Zak Penn was offered? Ugh. Well I guess we got a step up. Penn is the only reason I am scared to death of the Avengers film since he's signed on to pen :csad:. Unless Marvel lets Norton butt-in again and rewrite whatever crap he comes up with I fear for that movie.

Oh no, I'm not debating that just pulled the whole "we'll see" thing. I'm just saying she seemed to light up when Gambit was mentioned and went on about how she loved him--on the other hand Deadpool and Magneto were mentioned and she was quick to say "Oh oh... very internal, yeah,...yeah... working it out."

I would say Magneto and Gambit aren't that likely. Gambit might be a bit more likely because whenever he does appear in mainstream media like the cartoons people gush all over him, but I don't know if Fox will find him deserving of a solo after having only a cameo in a Wolverine film. Maybe sometime down the line after he appears in Wolverine 2 and/or X-Men First Class 2/3. Magneto doesn't seem like it would be good as a summer popcorn film for Fox, but I dunno.

I'm all for an X-Men: First Class series of films (3) that introduce the first fights between X-men and the brotherhood. Gambit's time with the X-men. Xavier recruiting some of the students we see later in the series (Piotr, Kitty, etc), Hank leaving... there is good stuff here. Maybe not 3 films, definitely two though.

Then, I'm all for moving onto X-men 4 and maybe X-men 5 bringing in the Sentinels, Sinister and Apocalypse. My ideal choice is for Singer to return for as many of these films as possible.

But yeah, why not let the X-men have a film continuity that spans a lot of films.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine
X-Men: First Class (Beast, Cyclops, Storm, Jean.../first fight vs brotherhood/Magneto)
X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2 (Japan)
X-Men First Class 2 (Gambit meets X-men. Recruit Piotr and Bobby. Hank leaves)
DeadPool
X-Men (2000)
X2: X-Men United
X3: The Last Stand
X-Men 4 (Sinister, Cyclops returns, Sentinels/Project Wide Awake)
X-Men 5 (Apocalypse)

This wouldn't be that bad. If they tied it all together nicely, there is no reason a film like X3: The Last Stand couldn't be forgiven in the scheme of things.

I just don't see how all of these spin off's are going to happen.
-Deadpool
-Gambit
-Wolverine 2
-First-Class 1-3
-Magneto

7 X-movies. Keeping in trend with one being made every 3 years as it has been...? 21 years of X-atude. Either recasts will have to be done for some roles, or some (or most) of these movies will fall through.

I don't think they will all be summer films though. You could go Fall-Spring with maybe a year and a half between films. Maybe they'll have something ready by the spring or fall 2011. Then Wolverine 2 summer 2012 or something else should Wolverine underperform. And Deadpool, Gambit, Magneto is wishful thinking IMO. Maybe we'll get one of those. Not all three.

Well, in all fairness, Wolverine and Gambit have worked together in the comics before. They even had their own miniseries. You can still be a loner but team up with people for a common goal. You don't even have to like each other.
But he could also play a prominent role in the movie without being a sidekick.

OK, I see the new page since yesterday, but I think I was a bit harsh with my post, so I feel like correcting. In the comics, I agree. In fact it was 'Victims' that got me into Gambit in the first place. But, I doubt Wolverine 2 will allow secondary characters to become any more prominent than Wolverine 1. So, while I'm not what you'd call a fangirl, I'd prefer my Gambit equal to the main character(s), now that it's pretty much clear that the casting was fine.

On the other hand, Wolverine, he's fine on his own. I don't see why he needs a partner. In the comics, you can either make it a proper team-up story, which 'Wolverine' is not - or you can have multiple POVs, which I doubt the movie will. I don't think the Fox films are bad, but they are definitely not there to please comics fans. I doubt they'd make Wolverine share.

I think it is more fun when they dont like each other, and try to be better than the other one, but Gambit probably end up being more of a sidekick than a partner

I'd prefer they tried that with Deadpool, and not Wolvie. DP and Gambit are not so well known by the general audience. In the comics, Deadpool talking to himself and to his current opponents is fine. In a movie, he might just need a partner, even if he narrates. That might also save Deadpool from being turned handsome. Although, I'd probably like that partner to be Outlaw - a strong female character, the way she was in Agent X. Or maybe both her and Weasel.

I really do hope we get a Deadpool movie. Assuming, of course, that Reynolds can have his way with the portrayal. As for the rest, I'd prefer X4-6. Since they make a First Class (trilogy), I'd rather just keep an open mind, and hope it won't be just for teenagers.

How can we really trust Donner or Fox at this point?

Donner still believes a Constantine sequel will happen.

im cool with an Xmen First class, and im super excited about Patrick being in for it!

and also her really wanting Bryan back could totally fix the franchise, if it actually happened.

but im not gonna lie, im pretty much completely against any Magneto or Gambit solo movie. just put their stories into the First Class stuff, that way they can get out there, but dont have to take up a whole movie!

we cant, and we never could, FOX just wants to make money, so they do whatever to bring people to see it and buy the dvd, they dont care if they disrespect the comic. i want a deadpool solo movie so badly, but i think i would rather wait a few years, when it goes back to marvel,

Since Singer made two good quality X-men movies, I think he should be the one to do the X-men: First, second and hopefully third class also. And if X-men: First Class is going against Marvel’s Avengers in 2012(there’s always a three year gap between films), then the excessive use of special effect won’t help a weak and rushed plot.

^ While Singer's films were Okay, especially X2, I hope he doesn't return because He could have done so much more with the series then he did. I believed that in 2000 and I believe that now. They should get a different director, to do this one.
Although I do believed that he should have directed Wolverine, cause he already made two good wolverine movies.

I would love to see that. :( I really liked the first movie we got.

Singer is still the only director to make a good X-Film for me. I'd rather have him then some new guy, no matter how talented the new guy is. Gavin Hood proved a good director can mess up an X-Film just as badly as a mediocre one.

Singer could’ve done more, but what he did left us feeling overall satisfied compared to Brett and Hood’s work. With Wolverine out of the picture, now is Singer’s chance to do more. After seeing someone like Hood mess up a movie which was supposed to focus on only ONE character, I just don’t want a new director anymore.

^ Understandable. If Singer came back I wouldn't be upset about it, Like you said cyma he did leave the audience with an over all satisfaction. I really feel he should've directed the Wolverine film, that should've been his Film, I don't think another director could do it...correctly, Hood Tried and failed in my opinion. But anyways I understand why you wouldn't want a new director, It is painful seeing such great characters and stories butchered.

Same here on Wolvie movie. When I watch X1 and X2, Logan does appear like a man struggling to suppress his animal side. In Origins he’s just a Superman wannabe. Besides the good story execution, respecting the characters is also another thing I admire about Singer. He might’ve given us cameo roles or short screen time for certain characters, but never killed them off like characters in X3. With all the negative fuss Wolvie's movie has created, I really hope Fox reconsiders bringing Singer back.

I guess I am one of those oblivious people that it takes a lot for me to notice any one director over another. I wouldn't care if Singer came back because I don't know what he would have done to X3 to make it any better, seeing as how the script is was what it was.

I'm not sure I'd want to have Singer back. If he does direct an X4 or First Class, it's guaranteed that Gambit won't be in it; he made a deliberate choice to not include him in the first and second movies with a background cameo being the most he could have gotten in X3 if Singer had gotten his way,
