Yeah but people love cheering Godzilla. If you make him this thing of destruction and evil and kill him at the end, you lose the audience. That's the mistake the GINO movie made.
Actually, even when Godzilla was the villain in his other films, fans and audiences still rooted for him.
For example,
In Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, Godzilla was destructive and heartless, but you cheered for him because he was the lesser of two evils since Ghidorah was the greater evil. Even when he still continued his rampage and went against Mecha King Ghidorah/Emmy. Was he now the main villain at that point? Sure. Did fans cheer when Godzilla survived at the end of the movie despite knowing that he later on became the film's second villain? Hell yes.
This was of course from the Heisei Series, a series in which Godzilla starts out as a villain and gradually transitions into an Anti-Hero. He doesn't care about mankind, nor does he care about our world. But he sees everything as his own territory, and if a threat more dangerous than humans comes along. He'll handle it before going back to ruining mankind and living out his days.
Legendary is taking Godzilla back to his gritty dark roots of the original, and through Frank Darabont, Godzilla will be a destructive force of nature while being a symbolism for another matter of mankind's faults. With two other monsters being involved, chances are Godzilla will be seen as the lesser of two evils.
He'll still destroy everything, but you'll root for him if it means Godzilla taking out other threats more threatening than himself.
No one cheered for GINO because he wasn't a villain, and wasn't Godzilla at all. Some probably cheered for GINO since he was just portrayed as a tragic creature just trying to nest and trying to avenge his lost offspring.
