And it seems Disney really wants him, the question is while it looks like Harry is a done deal since (we have reports from reputable sites saying he is in talks which usually means it's happening), there still seems to be some hesitancy so this role is his to lose.

I just can’t buy why anyone would give up exploring the oceans for Harry Styles. Frankly not the best casting. Eric was always going to be hard to cast but gee they missed by a wide margin there. Quite a few people were casting some really interesting korean actors for Eric who would have knocked it out of the park

This person has a friend who's dad is a producer on the movie. In June when Zendaya was shown with red hair in London they had stated she was talks but wasn't anymore. They also stated that Disney did consider Gaga for the role of Ursula as well as actual drag queens.

I think Eric was suppose to be the thing that "broke the camel's back" when it came to Ariel's fixation with humanity, like he became the physical embodiment of that desire to be human but it didn't come across that way b/c these animated movies lacked a certain complexity to them.

And I agree with your Eric casting comment in regards to Harry Styles.

That's sorta what the Aladdin remake did with Jasmine. They made it more than just her wanting to chose who she wanted to marry. It was more about he wanting to become Sultan or at least have a say in regards to running her family's kingdom in order to help her people.

Javier Bardem for Triton? That's a weird choice. I'd be surprised if Disney go with that. I'd thought they were gonna cast a black actor to go with Ariel's casting like Idris Elba or someone! Bardem would maybe be better for Sebastian unless they want someone specifically Jamaican for him (or get Lin-Manuel Miranda for the voice instead).
