Live-Action The Little Mermaid

Oh I forgot Rob Marshall was directing this. Yeah no this is going to suck.

just like clockwork for these people...

Wasn't really looking forward to this, but after taking a peek at the trailer, I will say this, Halle Berry looks like she'll be a fantastic Ariel and has the singing chops to boot (something I felt Emma Watson severely lacked with her Belle performance), and is most likely going to be highlight in an otherwise mediocre remake.

The cinematography looks unimpressive and lacks color, which doesn't surprise me much unfortunately.

Her singing voice is wonderful, I may or may not have cried I bit.

We’ll see if the film is necessary, but Bailey will knock this out of the park.

Bailey sounds great but the only trepidation I have is considering Disney's track record with the live action remakes that we're in for yet another disappointing film but this time we'll have to deal with the damn discourse of the grifters saying it's because Ariel isn't white.

I lowkey hope this movie quality-wise is the outlier.

Halle looks and sounds absolutely fantastic and I really love the frilly tail. That said, the colours in the environment look really washed out and judging by the glimpse of Flounder, I’m worried they’ll make the fish hyper-realistic. I’m also concerned about Ursula because as much as I like Melissa, I’m not sure she’s right for the role.

It’s not going to take much for Melissa to look like Ursula and she can do playfully devious.

But does she have the singing chops like the late Pat Carroll did? That’s still unclear.

She looks great, sounds great, though having a rift in that song is a choice....

I wonder if they will be adding any bubbles to showcase more of being under the sea.

This has always been my favorite Disney film so i just hope it's one of the best adaptiond yet

The original TLM is also my favorite Disney film (also my first) but the remake looks like tired deja vu like BATB ‘17 and TLK ‘19. And I’m just tired of Disney milking their IP titles dry.

They should make a spin-off with Joe Gatto from Impractical Jokers!!! :oldrazz:

They're effectively making 'woke' feel like the n-word now. Just ruined and twisted the whole damn term.

I hate when they steal from us.

That's basically what it is now.

It's speaking in code , so every time they see a minority in any property, they now throw that term around.
They use it against Caucasian women too, of course, and they fear women in general, on a very basic, and pathetic level.

But , they're also bigots and racists , but don't want to openly admit it, so they use the term "woke" and then say , " Oh, I'm just talking about politics, not race or ethnicity" .

It's sad and pathetic really , but thankfully , they don't get a veto of the creative decisions of filmmakers, casting directors, producers , and studios.

Halle's got a lovely voice and that's really the only thing I can hang my hat on at the moment. Cinematography looks like a bland Aquaman.

Haven't liked any of the other live-action remakes, so I'm not really expecting much, but at the very least I can hope for a nice new rendition of "Part of Your World".

Oh my gosh this looks amazing! So glad they nailed the underwater cgi and that tail! And Halle’s voice! She is so perfect. Can’t wait to see how Ursula turns out

Melissa McCarthy is going to cut up as Ursula. Eager to see her in action also lol.

I’d be shocked if McCarthy’s Ursula didn’t look as close to the original animated version as possible. Halle’s Ariel has some additional frills on her tail and her purple top is slightly tweaked, but they didn’t change the classic features of the character.

McCarthy should just watch old Divine movies and play it as broadly as she can.

Woke? Because she's black? Why is it woke?

It’s all about white grievance. Anything featuring minorities in prominent lead roles that aren’t stereotypes is “woke.” Showing children with two dads or two moms is “woke.” Promoting diversity and taking the high road is “woke.”

It’s a catch all insult for MAGA Republicans.

So what would this discussion be, if they‘ll do a live action version of the princess and the frog and Tiana will be white?

I think the red hair is ugly, but that's purely a subjective problem on my end. I've never liked red or auburn on dark skinned women. I might have preferred emerald or some pearlescent color maybe. But they're trying to stay faithful to the red hair so points to them.

Singing seems fine and typical Disney.

I prefer the mermaid designs in On Stranger Tides, and wish they had went that direction with scales and the breasts being naturally covered or reserved instead of the cloth or whatever she's wearing on her midriff, but the design they went with is more appropriate for Disney so it's not a deal breaker.

As for skin color, personally I have the same issue with this that I do with black dwarves. Subterranean creatures or deep sea fish people having dark pigment doesnt make much sense. But like with the design, I get the motivation behind Disney going with a non white actor. It helps with marketing and PR towards a diverse audience and ultimately it's entirely harmless for this character to be whatever race that want. The fact she can sing well makes her skin color matter even less.

Originally, “woke” meant “alert to injustice and discrimination” — which, one might think, is a good thing. But then the right (especially the far right and MAGA types) appropriated the term as a pejorative. Thus, a black Little Mermaid is “woke” because this (fictional) character is… ahistorical?, revisionist?, a threat to white culture?, etc. Wonky stuff. More recently, however, many on the left (who otherwise despise Trump and all things MAGA) have started using “woke” to describe perceived excesses on the far left. So the definition is all over the map. The linguist John Mc****ter (not sure why his name is censored), in a NY Times essay, has an interesting overview on the evolution and transformation of “woke.”

No, Tiana will stay black. They’ll probably change the nationality of Prince Naveen for the live action version.

And Disney will remake Frozen into a live action film eventually. And they’ll cast Kristoff with an actor of color as they’re already doing it with the Broadway show.
