Live-Action The Little Mermaid

Oh wow, I didn't watch the full trailer until now so I didn't realize that they showed Sebastian since the Oscars version was a trimmed down cut. I'm actually a fan of the more "cartoonish" design of Sebastian because sometimes too realistic isn't the best way to go, especially with an anthropomorphic crab.

To me, this looks like it has potential to be the best of the live action Disney Renaissance remakes. It's not a particularly high bar to clear. I thought Aladdin was solid even though I wasn't a fan of some of the changes (Jafar should have sang the "Prince Ali" reprise and turned into a snake), I enjoyed Beauty and the Beast but I totally understand the criticism that was aimed at it, and The Lion King, well...yeah, we all know what happened with that one.

Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy look great here, and I'm willing to eat crow about McCarthy because I was very skeptical about her casting here but it looks like she nailed it.

We get hot Jafar, but not a hot Eric... :nocare:
Don't forget about hot Cogsworth. :o

We know too much about oceans. Like, how shallow it starts to get dark in there and how light diffuses in saltwater.
Realism made everything underwater looks so foggy. Kind of an oppressive stuffy atmosphere, even the very colorful and illuminated scenes.

The should've toned it down and give us more of a finding Nemo underwater style.

Halle sounds really nice, but outside of that, I am not feeling any of this.

Weird how you left out the only two actual good ones, Cinderella and The Jungle Book. :funny:

I doubt this one comes close to those, but I guess you never know. It will almost certainly make more money, though.

Ah, but Cinderella and Jungle Book weren't Renaissance films, FC. I can't speak for Cinderella because I still haven't seen the remake but the reason why The Jungle Book is one of, if not the best of the live action remakes is because it carves its own path and does its own thing as opposed to being a by the numbers copy of the original. I'm not expecting The Little Mermaid to be better than that but it still seems promising.

Whoops, I missed the "Renaissance" part. :disguise:

It is a fairy tale about a singing mermaid. If you are trying for realism, you are doing it wrong.

Nah its gonna rake it in regardless. I want to remind you everyone hated Lion King 2019 and it made 1.6 billion.

The 2019 Lion King was a slap in the face, while the 2017 BATB was a pale shadow of the original. It was a shot for shot CG remake with inferior voice acting and none of the timelessness of the 1994 classic. And it ended up being one of 2019’s biggest hits.

At least with the TLM remake they are distinguishing it from the 1989 original with new songs, different casting and so forth.

All the Renaissance remakes have had a new song. It's their token Oscar bid at this point. And I'm not seeing much difference in the casting, either. TLK made an effort to have more people of African descent in their main cast, and Aladdin's casting....was all over the place, but they made sure not to let it be a bunch of white people. This one might turn out better, but I'm not seeing a huge difference in approach from the others so far, personally.

I’m not looking forward to it myself, but I hope this gives Halle the clout to do bigger and better things down the line.

And like I said earlier, I love the supportive fan artwork featuring Jodi and Halle’s Ariels.

I found the regailing of the Renaissance to be quite shallow and pedantic. :fancy::shr::sb:

Hm yes. Shallow and pedantic.

also I saw this and thought it was interesting enough to share

It's funny seeing people complain about Ariel not looking like her dad because it's not "believable" to them, in a story about a mermaid... :whatever:

Maybe she takes after Mum. ;nd

The cinematography looks beautiful as well as the imagery

Other than that, meh

The live action remakes feel so shallow. They lack the charm and heart that the original animated films have
