Logan Logan - news & discussion - Part 4

My thoughts are in the spoiler review thread. I perhaps sound a bit harsh and frustrated at this point, because the film itself isn't bad... But a game-changer? Transcending the genre? I think it can be considered to be the best of all Logan films, technically, but it doesn't make it a great film.

Going into a movie expecting a game changer is a bit foolish. I remember when some people were saying Deadpool was a game changer, when in reality it was just a very good movie. Logan is the same. No sense in overhyping it.

I didn't expect a game-changer. It's just after seeing the film I don't see anything game-changing.

Deadpool is a game-changer in a sense, that R-rated CBMs can make enormous money too.

I cried. Hugh Jackman better get a best actor nomination. **** it. It better get a best movie nomination. It won't win. This one was better than Moonlight, better than Spotlight, was essentially a Birdman that people can have fun watching, same quality of film as 12 Years a Slave, as good as Argo, better than The Artist, way better than The King's Speech and yeah, better than The Hurt Locker. If Return of the King won for being a cumulative end to The Lord of the Rings films, **** it this should win for being the cumulative end to the X-Men films. Well, the X-Men films I, and a lot of you on here, grew up with.

There was that review, Logan's not like other superhero movies but it's a lot like other movies. The reason why people care about Logan more than those other movies is because Logan actually has characters people care about. I cried. You know what the last film that made me cry was? The Lion King and that was years ago when I was a kid. Bye Hugh, you helped define part of my childhood. Thanks.

Agreed.

Dafne Keen will get a look in with a Best Supporting Actress nomination next year. Child actors tend to be very hit and miss, but I've seen actresses three times her age with less emotional range than what she displayed.

Logan is a thoughtful, layered drama that even without the action works perfectly as an artful elegy about death, getting older, and the transient feeling of belonging and family. It also works as a parable about the vilifying of undocumented immigrants. It has Oscar nomination worthy performances from Jackman and Stewart, and actually does what Feige pretends his Marvel Studios films do: place a "superhero movie" in a new genre. In this case, Logan is every bit the gritted modern western as Hell or High Water or the like. Compare that to The Winter Soldier, which pretends its a spy film but still relies primarily on the cheeky comedy beats of all MCU movies and then ends in a boring CG "save the world, destroy the city" third act almost all Marvel movies have.

Yes, I do think Logan is a game changer. For the first time since The Dark Knight Trilogy, we have a superhero movie that is trying to be more than a superhero movie and it does so in a way that is startling different from Nolan's Batman movies.

Like it or not, this is one folks will remember because it is so defiantly different and still of immense quality.

Thoughts on Mangold's comments?

I agree 100%!
And I find it said when people think negatively about a movie "because it's too stand-alone?" --- WHUUUUTT!?!? A movie's success or failure should be judged within the confines of the opening logos and the end credits. Was it a good / great movie? Yeah. No. If it teases future installments shouldn't really be part of one's judgement of a movie.

With this, as well. The beauty of this movie (and also Deadpool, or Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, and others) is that they went all out on what they wanted to achieve, whereas Marvel Studios mostly repackages (with a few exceptions) the same kind of movie and then add some genre conventions to pretend they're playing in a different genre... when they're really NOT.

Game changer or not it's in the top 3 of all CBm that's easy. It's just ridiculously well executed on all aspects.

Even though I love TWS, that's completely accurate.

I think my problem is Hell or High Water was about an 8/10 movie for me.

So that vibe really didn't seem "special" for me.

I'm going to watch it again this weekend. Very solid film. Maybe another view will make it great to me.

I'm trying not to get spoiled but what seems to be the general consense among CB fans? Was it overhyped? A friend texted me last night saying it was horrible and he's a huge wolverine fan. I don't take one single opinion that serious, but still...

I went on what I consider to be the hater website forum for fox Cmb and everyone is loving it. Even the common trolls.

There seem to be a lot more people who seem to love it, rather than people who didn't like it. There was one person in my screening who got angry over Charles' arc in the movie and there have also been a lot of people critizing the inclusion of
X-24
Generally though I think the response has been pretty positive.

Dude, it's awesome.

But run. Run off the web. I'm lucky to have seen it on Wednesday, as I've found out that there are huge spoilers EVERYWHERE. Even on Youtube.

And it really works incredibly well as both a character piece and tense sci-fi thriller (which is why you wanna go in knowing as little as possible), and it should be a dream come true for Wolverine fans who want to finally see the character as he was depicted in the comics.

Went last night. What a film. I really loved it. I feel like the more I see it, the more I'll love it.

After JKR's post I also feel the need to add that I personally really loved it as well. :p

Just walked into the theater. Haven't been this excited about a movie since The Avengers.

Here. We. Go.

Two hours to go. I'm scared to death and so excited I have stomach pains XD It's the culmination of the so dear original trilogy and I don't know if I'm ready. See you on the other side!

This, Logan was freaking superb, just got back and still thinking about it.

Whether you like it or not, Logan is and will stay one of the hottest movies of the year. The situation about the movie kinda reminds me of the buzz that Fury Road had when it came out two years ago, even though we're talking about very different films. Not on that exact level, but similar.
