Man of Steel 2 News and Speculation - Part 1

Question: so the rumor is that the Supergirl film made news because of the contract for Cavill still being talked about behind the scenes. And the rumored reason behind it is because, like Affleck, WB/DC wants to make sure that these actors will be these characters for the foreseen future. Gadot is this for WW, we know Momoa is for Aquaman, and we know Ezra is for Flash; Cavill already is for Superman, and his performance in M:I 6 has been praised to high heaven, so why waiting? I have my own theory: recent interviews have had Cavill state what stories he would want to do, and agreeing with Brainiac being the sequel's villain. What if his contract is being stalled because he doesn't just want to act, he wants to be involved creatively? Writing and maybe producing; not directing, like the Kinberg situation for X-Men: DP, or maybe kinda similar. Who knows? Thoughts?

I guess it's possible. Does Cavill have any experience in that side of things?

I thought that was what the earlier rumor claimed - that he wanted creative input (eg, a producer credit) as part of the deal.

Superman truly is the hardest superhero to cast, imo. With Batman the cowl and theatrics do half the work and you can always use a voice-changer if necessary, but with Supes, you can't really cheat. They just have to look, sound and seem like Superman, naturally.

Following the casting thread for the (possible) new Batman, even that has been difficult to (fan) cast. Of course some up-and-comer in movies may not have been considered yet, or there might be someone kind of unexpected or right in front of us (a bit like Gadot for WW.) It is easy to get caught up (and lost) looking on IMDb of potential actors from recent movies, though!

Agreed, I haven't seen a name yet that's made me think "Yeah... He could do it."

Me either.

The fact that we are at the stage where we are talking about finding a replacement for Cavill as though it were a serious possibility is depressing. :csad:

It is a bit sad but also feels a bit too early to start doing that.

It’s hard, but not impossible. SG found Hoechlin, and despite not resembling the character quite as much as Cavill, he is - in my opinion - the overall better Superman. Now, to be fair, he’s had much better material to work with, but if some CW show can find a halfway decent actor, I’m sure a big time casting director can do the same thing.

Hoechlin's "better" material was material that was designed to place the character within a context where he's been Superman for over a decade and has found a genuine connection with his Kryptonian roots on Earth. Is he better because he's better or is he better because he's what DCEU Superman would be ten years from now? I think it's the former rather than the latter.

TYLER HOECHLIN: That word “support” is the strongest one that I’ve tried to lean on. This is not his origin story. This is someone who’s been doing this for a long time and has become very comfortable. The game has slowed down for him. These things that seem like a big deal to her, he’s gone through those issues already. The role of him coming into this, for me, from the very beginning, was to support her, which lends itself to being a supporting character. There was never an intention for this to be about him. It’s always about her. It’s called Supergirl, and Melissa has done such a great job. For [Superman], it’s always about building her up and being there to impart wisdom when he can and support her when he can, but in no way try to make her feel like she’s not capable of doing anything that he could do.

Hoechlin's Superman is also a guest character intended to support Kara, so he doesn't have to cope with the weight of his own arc as the lead protagonist. To me, it's like comparing apples to oranges.

I agree, Hoechlin was able to put himself into the role which I don’t think Cavill has been able to do outside of Man of Steel. Admittedly Hoechlin was playing the role of an established Suprman but Cavill was supposed to be more established in BvS but Snyder didn’t show us enough of that Superman in his movies.

Just watched A Monster Calls, I am now converted to the idea of a Bayona Superman film.

A Monster Calls, indicates and shows every reason why Bayona is an ideal choice too direct a Superman film. A beautiful story and film.

I wish Cavill the best, but my interest in seeing him reprise the role in anything other than an animated series is dangerously close to zero.

Fair enough, obviously I completely disagree. But each to their own.

If it’s any consolation: he’ll likely end up reprising the role as a result of me actively wanting him not to. :o

:funny:

I see stuff like this:

He just IS Superman.

Maybe in real life, but he hasn't really had the opportunity to show that off in the movies. And that’s not really his fault, but (for me) the damage has been done. Again: I’d welcome the opportunity for him to voice the character in an animated series or something.

They cast Cavill for aesthetic reasons. He looks absolutely perfect for Superman. Some artists even draw Superman to look like Cavill.

I definitely prefer Hoechlin despite him not looking 100% like the comics.

I agree that if SG could find Hoechlin, that the movie side could find a good replacement for Cavill as well.

Right now I don’t want him to be replaced necessary but I’d be fine if it happened.

I think he was cast because Snyder genuinely liked him. His uncanny resemblance to the character was just icing on the cake.

But we’ve seen the result of Snyder’s decisions, so...

Snyder mentioned that the selling point was seeing Cavill in the old Christopher Reeve suit and how no one batted an eye. Might be worth mentioning that, by all accounts I’ve heard, he cast Jesse Eisenberg as Luthor for little more than an impulse to be different (considering that, prior to casting, Joaquin Phoenix was the front runner.)

All that said, I do still like Cavill and think he has the right attitude and investment in the character to make it work. The opportunity just hadn’t presented itself.

I really feel for Cavill. It was obviously seen as the opportunity of a lifetime. I'm sure he (and pretty much everyone else involved) saw MoS (and sequels) as doing for Superman what TDKT did for Batman. It just didn't quite work out that way.

I’m thinking the next time we see Superman, if not in Shazam, will be in JL2.
Which is what I assume the Legion of Doom stuff is leading up to.

I guess we’ll know if The LOD & JL2 are still in the plans when Aquaman comes out. :hmm

I'll be really surprised if we get another JL movie before 2025.
