People do realize that Superman is a science-fantasy character right? Of course his films are going to have sci-fi in them. His origin is built on a completely science fiction premise. The dude is from an advance civilization.

Yes but you would agree with me when I say the alien/sci-fi aspect of Superman was never focused on and used this much in film before. Donner's film is such a wide spread and culturally impacting film. I can see why some critics commented how it didn't feel like a Superman film and it was more of alien/ Independence Day.

Just bare with us and hope the sequel is more intimate and character driven while still have the spectacle of a superhero film.
I feel there was so much action and sci-fi thrown into the film to gather people's interest in Superman again, and also making it fresh for the general public. I understand some people weren't happy or that impressed with that we got but I have a feeling the sequel will feel more like a traditional superman story in tone.
Snyder has gotten the world's attention. It's up to him to improve with Goyer and give us another good but improved film.

Jor EL: You will give the people an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun. In time, you will help them accomplish wonders.

In times guys. In time. Even Jor-El knows that his son has some growing to do.

Even as Batman has been the more popular character for around two decades now? Insane.

Yeah. I mean it's all subjective but I think people hold batman to higher standards and he is more popular.
To me the top 3 most popular Heros are
Batman
Superman
Spider-Man.
It's always been that way for me, those three are who I hear about the most.

There's two types of criticisms for this film. The first revolves around filmmaking such as editing, script, etc. The second type involves tone and characterization. I think if they tweak the tone a little than people will be more accepting of the editing and other filmmaking criticisms.

Box office thread. So MOS sold 31 mill tickets at the end of Sunday. I think 37 million tickets will get you to 300 mill domestic.

Donner's Superman opens and focuses on an advanced alien civilization, that sends criminals into another dimension and a little boy in a space ship across the stars. Then he builds a Fortress of crystals based on the advanced alien civilization. His powers come from the sun and the only thing that can stop him is radioactive pieces of his planet. He literally travels back in time.

It is all there. People just chose to ignore it.

Exactly, when Supes is done right it is a Sci-fi epic. And like it or not the Scifi and action is a big reason for the success at the box office

No. I think Supes is held to an even higher standard.

There is annoying amount of pretentiousnes associated with Supes that does more harm than good.

Meh. I don't find the Donner film having very alien tones and themes aside from the opening on Krypton. Most of the film is grounded and focused on Earth.
I'm hoping that's basically MOS2 tbh.
It's going to be interesting how 2 turns out.

It is funny because they complain about Superman as a character and call him unrelatable and irrelevant in this day and age, and yet these are the same people who give MoS crap when they don't take the all time box office record.

I think thats the problem. They are not used to this Superman.

The Batman films get alot of love. But thats because the film doesnt diverge so much from the two first Burton films.

Its more realitics an stripped of its colorfulness, but Burton and Nolan still had that tough and serious Batman. The tone of the films are all dark and a bit twisted. So there was familiarity.

With Man of Steel, its a big change. Donner and Snyder films are different in tone. Donner is more of the magic and romance. Snyder is more of tragic and epic. Donner was a fairy tale, Snyder was sci fi.

The origin is about a boy from space. The sequel will be about Earth's finest hero.

Donner's film at their best were about the sci-fi. It is when it gets away from that that is starts to go off the rails.

For all the talk about wanting to make Superman different, I think the audience was most comfortable when they saw him at the Daily Planet.

It really is contradictory.

I hope Snyder is smart enough to retain the Scifi and spectacle-to loose it will be shot in the leag. Improving the sequel involves BETTER editing, more intimate moments and properly defined character arc, humor, and scenes showing Supermans care for humans.

The origin is about a boy from space. The sequel will be about Earth's finest hero.

And THAT'S what excites me. The potential to show the worlds reaction to this alien being. Show the government deciding what to do. Show the backlash. Yes this alien saved us but at what cost ? A good chunk of Metropolis was decimated. Introduce Luthor using it to his advantage. Show him rebuilding Metro and use him as the main supporter for the Anti-Superman group.
Focus more on DP and Kal and Lois's growing relationship.
Man the sequel has great potential to be something special.

Iron Man needs to be there. He might even be tops now. Box office numbers don't lie.

The "flaws" in this film, I seen in a lot of CBMs. With their not liking the direction they are taking Superman that say that MOS is a lesson of what not to do in making a film. I find that unfair.

When people say that it doesnt feel like a Superman film. I can buy that reason. But the nitpicking is ridiculous.

Hence the ending. :yay:

In what world is $300m domestically for a reboot not big money?

Those who will whine, moan, and ***** about anything. That's fantastic money as far as I'm concerned. That'll put it in the top 30 biggest movies of all time domestically.

Anyone know what the box office is at currently?

I read 3.04 mill for Monday but don't know if that's confirmed.

For all the talk about wanting to make Superman different, I think the audience was most comfortable when they saw him at the Daily Planet.

I totally agree with that. Even when I saw DP Clark, it was like seeing an old friend. I dont think people were interested in Kal-El. People like Clark.

But I was very interested in Kal and farm boy Clark.

Yeah, that is WB estimate for today 52% drop is pretty typical for a Monday. Man of Steel is stabilizing. 3.04 is better than I expected today. (2.75 is what I originally thought). Could have a 11-14 million week which would be good to go with a 12 million weekend. 270 million after this weekend means 300m is on the table.

Agree on the Bolded.I am ctually interested in Kale-el but for some reason Farmboy Clark and DP clark resonated better with me.
