Yup. And there were only a few big movies released for the entire summer. Now you get a big movie released every other week during the summer.
when it comes to marvel movies, there is definitely a love of iron man and i think the first movie really did resonate with the critics and the general audience. iron man 2 and war machine and some other marvel characters but i wouldn't put war machine as the same level as batman. i think iron man 3 did extremely well because it was coming off of the avengers. i'm pretty curious how the sequels to captain america and thor perform at the box office. i also think at this point, batman and spiderman are more popular than superman. in my opinion it's quite unfortunate becuase i think superman is the best, but what are you going to do. i think batman is the most popular single character right now and that is why he's being put into man of steel 2. i really hope that he doesn't overshadow superman, and it's a great way to reintroduce a new batman from the past trilogy, but i would have liked a straight up sequel to man of steel, but i do think that wb would have liked it to do somewhat better at the box office. definitely happy to be seeing a new superman movie! oh and as far as superman returns, the critics liked it but it didn't resonate with the general audience. iron man, batman, and avengers resonated with both, so that certainly helped the box office.
WB never expected Man of Steel to do $1 billion. Nobody did (not sane people, at least).
It met their projections. They are happy with the numbers. This is more their way of countering The Avengers 2 that summer.
TASM came out during 4th of July week, a very good date.
Pretty much yeah.TASM made 262 million domestically. MOS in 38 days made 285.
Its not that MOS is a failure. WB wants the billion dollar mark. That's all.

According to Variety, Robinov has predicted that Man Of Steel will be Warner Bros. highest performing movie ever at the box office ever.
Time for a reality check...
MOS did better than every Marvel movie other than Avengers and IM3. No one at WB is concerned about what the critics said. Money speaks louder than critics...just ask Michael Bay.
MOS2. Batman/Superman, Superman/Batman, Super BFF's for life...what ever the title of this movie will be is the smartest thing for WB to do.
1) They get to give the GA more Man of Steel
2) They get the ball rolling on the DC Cinematic Universe
3) They get to introduce the new Batman
4) Batman and Superman in the same movie
WB gets to do their 'Avengers' without actually doing Justice League. It will also be able to compete in the already cutthroat 2015 summer movie season (Avenger 2, Episode 7, ID42)
Sorry to burst your bubble, but MOS had the weakest legs of the summer, thus, weak GA support beyond the initial hype... I am the biggest Superman fan and have personally dragged over a dozen of my friends to see the movie.. and it's pretty mixed (same as the critics).
Don't get me wrong, I personally thought it was still the best movie of the year...
And there is a real risk (whether you would want to believe it or not) that MOS 2 might fail by itself (even though MOS did pretty good box office wise).
Bringing in the Bat was a good insurance policy...
And of course WB cares only about money.. (and they obviously didn't think MOS2 would make it)
BTW: Spinning goes both ways... Looks like now people are spinning 'WF' into MOS2...
Hmmm![]()
And it did alright dispite an uphill battle of being a reboot to a beloved franchise.
I'm assuming you're only referring to MCU films here. You might also point out that it's budget is also higher than all of theirs, in most cases considerably so. Profitability is what the studios care about, THAT is what speaks louder than critics.
Not holding my breath for Episode VII to hit that summer. Not matter how much Disney swears otherwise.

Summer 2015 is a big summer with big movies...you have to go big or go home....especially when you are up against Avengers 2 and Episode 7....MOS 2 would have been pretty adequate...but no one would be talking about it between the Avengers coming back and Mark Hamill reprising his role as Luke Skywalker.....Batman/Superman movie...ok now you are cooking with jet fuel...that deserves to be mentioned in 2015
I wasn't talking about War Machine, Nick Fury and Agent Romanoff showed up in IM2 for a subplot pertaining to the Avengers and Tony Stark's shortened life expectancy until he created Vibranium to power his new arc reactor. That's what I meant. Just because a film is attempting to bridge gaps in their shared universe, doesn't mean that the main character is not worthy of a franchise. Thus, Batman isn't there because Superman sucks, but rather that Snyder and Goyer are now trying to create a DCverse (you even hear Snyder himself say that he was looking up DCverses to see how we can continue the story of Superman).
Also that it turned out to be pretty medicore.....![]()
So you're saying they are doing this because they need to compete with Marvel and SW7?
Speak for yourself, I love the movie![]()
Disney has too much staked that summer and having both Avengers 2 and Star Wars Episode VII steals thunder from one another. Those are films you put as the centerpiece of your lineup for the whole year. You don't put them in the same summer. Too much. One of the rumors was it would go to Christmas 2015. That makes more sense.
