I'm a big fan of Reeve's Superman and the first film as a whole, but yeah... the whole spinning the earth backwards thing is so stupid. Even if that somehow could reverse time or whatever, I've never understood how Superman could fly so fast that he could do that, yet had trouble catching up to two missiles just a few scenes earlier.
The Earth spinning is actually simply a visual representation of Superman traveling through time. He isn't actually spinning the world around.

Yeah it's one of the dumbest moves put on film. I love STM but if I rewatch it I always stop at Lois dying. Lois dies for me in STM. :ninja:

It's like this:Hi, I'm Superman if I made a major mistake I can just spin the world backward to turn back time and all is reverse. I can do what ever I want and not have to live with my mistake... If I really wanted too I can turn back time to when my father die on the farm or even further and warn him about his heart issue. Get a heart transplant and he's living again. This I can relate too because he's more relatable :whatever:

Yeah the STM ending is supposed to be pure symbolism.

Of course you're going to think it's stupid if you took it literally, at face value.

Yeah, I read that once I grew older, but unfortunately I caught (and grew to love) the movie when I was knee high so the literal interpretation stuck with me.

Umm... did we watch the same movie in STM? In this universe it has been stated he spin earth backward in order to turn back time... He didn't just turn time by flying really fast to travel back in time. It clearly show the earth's rotation stop and went reverse. After he went to the time he needed he spin earth back to normal to resume normal time.

Yes. But I also understand symbolism and have read the director's intentions. Superman is not spinning the Earth. The Earth spinning represents his flying through time.

What does it symbolize?
Traveling through time.

So traveling through time symbolized traveling through time. Got it. :D

Hmmmm...not convinced.
You don't have to be, I personally don't really care. It is what happens.

When I was little I use to think it was literal. Still not the biggest fan of the look, but it is what it is.

No. Spinning the Earth around wouldn't alter time. It wouldn't "rewind" time. Earth isn't a videotape. Superman literally travels through time and space like the Doctor.

And Superman traveling through time did happen in the silver age.

Traveling through time.

If that's the case why did he than fly really fast the second time to turn the earth's rotation back to normal? If he travel back in time by flying really fast there is no need to fly really fast again, once he's in the time Lois is alive. Because if your claim were true by Superman flying really fast the second time clockwise he would had flow back to the future and Lois is death again :whatever: Either way, it was a terrible idea.

This is the most weirdest conversation. It doesnt symbolized anything. You spin the earth backwards and everything he did goes backwards as they were.

He travels so many times just so the earth can move backwards so ......................What am I doing?

The stupidity of that scene stains our minds and our conversations.

Using that theory it took him less effort to spin the world one way then the other. Hell it makes more sense that he went too far back in time. :funny:

Superman is definitely flying back in time rather than spinning the world backwards.

As for the scene, there is no way I can have S:TM in my top 5 greatest superhero movies ever with such a glaring Deux Ex Machina. Everything up to that moment though is pure gold.
