Man of Steel Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 2

I don't know anyone who liked Thor a lot or at all really, it got okayish (they weren't as good as Games reviews) reviews and I thought it was a pretty mediocre film. Even Captain America far outsold it on DVD. The Avengers should help it overcome a mediocre first film but it's not doing Iron Man 3 numbers.

I feel like Thor almost got a pass because it was connected to the avengers. I found it to be a very mediocre film.

Hunger games, for the first film in a new series got great review and had a massive opening. I would say it is in a better position than Thor. The only thing I'm curious to see is the bump of avengers provides to Thor, because arguably Iron Man was already a massive hit compared to the other marvel films.

As for superman, I suck at predicting, but I'm sure if it could make 100 million opening weekend that is a great number, but there is by no means a guarantee it will. I feel like word of mouth will make or break this film.

All the pre-Avengers Marvel films seemed to have gotten a pass after the Avengers. In my opinion other than the first Iron Man (which is just great) and the Avengers, the rest of the pack is solid but unmemorable.

I thought Avengers was one of the unmemorable/solid ones. Only ones I really liked were Iron Man, Iron Man 3 and Captain America.

I like the Asgard parts of Thor & Iron Man 1 & most of 3. I like elements of TIH & Cap but don't love everything about them. But Avengers combining them all into the same film without stuffing it up is the real trick in establishing a real comics-based universe and that alone makes it completely unforgettable for me, even if it probably won't be my favourite all time film (which it could have been).

This!

Though, Avengers was a nice joyride...

Captain America I liked because it had that old school Indiana Jones-ish feel Johnston brought to Rocketeer. Thor was accurate, but wasn't crazy about it. Now we need something to warrant Ruffa-Hulk getting another solo outing.

Yeah, would love to see that!

I agree about The Avengers being just okay. Most overrated movie ever. I loved IM1, despised IM3, and thought CA was great until Steve became Cap, then his character became really boring. Here's hoping Snyder and Goyer do a better job of making a pleasant, well-adjusted hero interesting.

Opening Week: 130 million
Domestic:365 million
Overseas: 500 million
Worldwide: 865 million

RT Score: 94% 8.7imdb

Thor should end up with a pretty good to great dom take. 200 millish dom, 250/300 overseas.
I dont see it as the surprise hit of the year tho, and certainly not #2 in the BO wars.
It has Waaay too many good and big films out there as its competition for it to take 2nd.

Same with PR..it should do pretty good here, 180/200 dom, but really great overseas. 400 mill +.
I think a lack of a big name will hurt it in the US, not so much overseas.

You realise THOR did US $181m / Int $268m --- WW $449m, right? Your prediction is just a $50m increase.

You folks are doing the exact same thing to Dark World that people were doing to IM3 a couple of months ago. "People didn't like IM2, there won't be much, if any, increase".
As you can see at your nearest Box Office website, The Avengers made people aware of & care about these characters, those same people now want to see where the characters go next. The much-overblown-on-the-internet dislike of IM2 was wholly irrelevant (as is THOR 1) and IM3 looks to finish around $1.2bn. That's about the combined totals of IM 1 & 2. (IM3 currently at: US $348m & OS $757m --- Worldwide: $1,105bn).

In light of that, and given it has less competition than IM3, I could pretty easily see Thor doing $250-300m US/ $600-700m OS.

I dont see it as the surprise hit of the year tho, and certainly not #2 in the BO wars.

My top 5 US:
IM3
HG: Catching Fire - $360-395m
Despicable Me 2/ Monsters U - $350m, maybe more for one of them.
MoS/ TH: Desolation of Smaug/ T:The Dark World - $300m

Top 5 OS:
IM3
TH: DoS - $1bn
T:TDW - $850m-$1bn
DM2/ MU - $800-900m

DoS may or may not loose some steam in the US, I don't see it catching IM3 unless it's significantly better than AUJ.

I think Hunger Games will drop a little from the first US, will increase overseas but not enough to get past $700-800m.

MoS - $600-650m WW

I'll say $150-200m US, $300-350m OS.

If Avengers didn't happen to happen, we def would have found out if the contempt for IM2 was overblown.

Quick question. If this movie did make a billion, would you be surprised?

a big yes to that.

I think it will do very good, have really good DvD sales, and the hunger for more will be there. A sequel or WF film announcement soon follows.
( granted, I havent seen it yet to know if its good or not, just making a prediction on if its good )

That said, I can honestly see a few folks not giving it a chance and skipping it. you know, the stubborn ones who refuse to see it because of the trunks, or because the last actor isnt back playing supes, or maybe the last film turned them off to this one and they just dont know that MoS is different. whatever. live under that rock.

They later see it on DvD or blue ray and regret not seeing it in the theater. WoW!! they'll think. And as they watch the film it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces.
They will then be on the bandwagon in wanting a sequel and proclaim to the world that they have always been a superman fan.
Oh, they will come, you'll see. they'll come here by the dozens and dozens.

I am actually secretly hoping that it will... I would be disappointed if it didn't... I don't know why, buy I feel like I have a stake in this movie and how it does in the box office matters to me... (strange since I am not even paid like Downy Jr for Ironman).

If this movie makes over a billion, I hope they do a trilogy next with a huge story arc and extremely epic.... like Lord of the Rings kinda... maybe, clash of civilizations type, entire race of aliens invading us?? It has to have HUGE, EPIC battles, not One to One fight type (like in Avengers, or X-Men)...

The OW is what i'm mostly interested in. Thats gonna be fun to watch.
