Man of Steel Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 2

I have to agree again. Being disheartened, disappointed by a previous movie simply doens't justify the fact that you wanted Superman's franchise to fail at all costs.

Now that is something I couldn't answer because I never thought it looked like or sounded like a good movie. I was disappointed before I saw the film (no physical Supervillain, Spacey playing Hackman Lex and Superman having a kid with Lois) and seeing the film confirmed my disappointment. I have to admit that I never thought it was a "good" film but certainly it got worse in my eyes over the months and years.

An episode of Smallville is actually more interesting than the trailer for SR. I'm not saying it's a crap movie, it just had no appeal. So whenever I hear how people were disappointed, I get very confused.

On the bright side, reading his comments made me start using gifs. :funny:

I didn't find the trailers or T.V spots to be all that great. The fact that it hit 200mil in 2006 is solely down to how popular Superman as a character is. That was a disappointing number to Warners but I thought it was a borderline miracle it made that much.

If there was any justice MOS would double that number.

The thing is, all over youtube the hype for MOS is HUGE. A youtube reviewer asked what are people's most anticipated movies of the year. With IM out of the way, most of the comments were MOS.

Then I go on these forums and I think maybe I'm overestimating.

why?? the main reason being it had been like 20 years since the last superman film and fans were starving for a new one. they ( me included ) ignored things that bugged them, ie, no supervillain, the kid, etc.
thats why people are more cautious with mos. i must say tho, it certainly looks like the superman film i've always wanted.

It made almost 400m WW without a Super Villain, a crap Lois, and a very poor story. What SR made is better than Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, and almost as good as what Thor made. All those movies had big name actors, big name villains, and helped build the MCU for phase 1. So for SR to make 400m shows just how popular Superman is like you said. And other people on here acting like he is a 2nd tier character or a has been for WB is pretty stupid if you ask me. MOS will be light years ahead of any Superman movie and any Marvel movie made to date IMO.

I still think SR made decent money, but, given its budget, it was kind of a loss.

So why don't you want Superman in the Justice League then? How is that growing or helping the character?

No,sorry,I don't believe a word I'm afraid Tobias. I've just re read your comments and a few others too and I stand by what I've said. What you have said in many many comments is too personal about Supes, and it is what you really think.

Being in a funk doesn't make someone hate like this mate,or justify what you have said. Most of us here were in a funk after Returns! You aren't the only one to be hurt or a bit pissed by that film. No Superman fan that I know either on this site or in my circle of friends has ever said the kind of comments you have repeatedly said about Superman.

Plus you only ever use the box office thread here and none of the other Superman threads?, why is that? IMO it's to just look out for signs of MOS not doing well and hoping that it is going to fall short and fail to get sequels etc etc.

You will just ignore all this and pretend it didn't happen and that no one has actually read your hater comments.

Sorry, but again,I do not buy it.

I am quite new here and have been lurking around checking out MOS until I couldn't resist but to sign up...

Now, I don't know Tobias and haven't read all his posts, except his MOS prediction ones mostly because I too wanted MOS to beat out all films (I know it's wishful thinking, but one can hope)... I constantly scour the web for MOS predictions to find people who would predict over a billion, cause that's what i want...

And whenever someone asks me to predict, I would go lower numbers.. it's kinda a superstition thing, if you will.. or, since I am not superstitious, let's just say, you don't want to be disappointed by predicting too high.. .so, I am thinking if Tobias is in the same psychology as I am in, he might just be pessimistic about the numbers so that he can be pleasantly surprised at the HIT I am hoping it'll be..

That's why I am so frustrated at WB for not promoting this movie well Overseas...

I want it to break record!!! And i am so sure it can because it's looking like a great movie.. and I fear the only thing keeping it from doing so is WB's lack of OS marketing...

I still think SR made decent money, but, given its budget, it was kind of a loss.

It might not have been a loss after the DVD/Bluray sales, and licensing deals... I bought a BluRay cause I loved the Plane Scene... that scene was incredible..

I just cant wait for the huge opening weekend and this Tobias idiot to be proven wrong with all his negative predictions. Then when it passes 750 mil ww he will look even more foolish.

Its completely moronic to use SR in anyway to judge this movie. They have absolutely nothing in common from suit, tone, plot, action , villains nothing even similar about these movies. One was was a lovechild to a 30 yr old franchise that looked and felt it. This is a whole new exciting vision that we have been for waiting for. But be we got duped by the boring Donner rehash that killed all excitement as soon as it was announced, instead getting new updated version of Superman on the big screen. Now we are finally getting what we wanted in 2007.

Your just a a hater and wouldn't know a know a good Superman movie if it dropped you on Krypton itself.

This movie will be huge and its going to be so great to see all your meager predictions get crushed.

The latest MoS tv spots are amazing. This film looks like it has action equivalent to Transformers 1-3 but an engaging, gritty story with a central theme of Hope brought to you by the team behind The Dark Knight trilogy! Forget SR, MoS will easily erase that bad taste in our mouths.

Those who are lowballing Man of Steel need to make like a tree... And get out of here. No, really, I get your concerns. SR this, SR that but guess what? This movie is on a collision course to destroy the box office. You're either on board for the ride or not. Keep in mind... School will be out. This is the epic summer blockbuster event of 2013. I mean, this is THE movie to go see if you're a sucker for action, superheroes. Engrave all of this into your doubtful minds.

Now, I have a few sources which cannot be named on here for business reasons -- that are flat out confident Man of Steel will surpass The Dark Knight Rises OW and that it will just barely end up on or around The Dark Knight cumulative domestic gross. Overseas is really hard to project but $550 million is a safe bet. I'd say the ceiling is $700 million foreign. This film will definitely either come close to a billion or easily gross beyond a billion. I don't project overseas numbers, only domestic so it is a challenge nonetheless.

Some of you need to forget SR and look forward to MoS. We're starting over and will see a Superman we've never seen before. Every shot, every moment, dialogue, we haven't seen or heard on the silver screen.

Out of curiosity, how is OS advertising going? In Asia especially because I keep reading complaints about that.

WB are busy promoting Great Gatsby, Hangover III and Pacific Rim in Asia.

Almost non-existent... i just checked out several more cinemas... even shows opening much later than MOS have Coming Soon posters... there are some MOS coming soon on tv screens that rotates, but no real posters anywhere... you see other movies plastered all over cinemas... i mean, all of them... except MOS... i think it's like someone made the decision not to provide materials to OS markets.. like posters, stickers, wall papers, cut outs...etc...

Agreed... Great tv spots.. but since they are not showing them in most countries, it doesn't matter... WB still don't understand that nowadays, blockbusters can do more than 80% of their box office OS.. that's where the big money is... (even if their cut is lower, it's still great to be able to market the fact that MOS did so and so much overseas)...

It will be a miracle if MOS earns as much money as SR did, not that SR did poor, in fact in India SR earned more money than movies like BB, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Captain America and Thor.

That's poor thinking, especially when movies like TDKR and Hobbit earned more money in Overseas market than in US domestic market.

Overseas it isn't being advertised the way it should. This is all about money and I'm baffled by WB's lack of foreign advertising and I'm not talking about any specific area -- as a whole, I'm disappointed. I can't speak for other nations of course because I don't live there but Warner is really shooting themselves in the foot by not cashing in all their chips for Superman! Take for example Harry Potter or even The Hobbit. These films were marketed like crazy overseas. My guess is WB feels like MoS will perform similar to The Dark Knight/The Dark Knight Rises or gross Inception like foreign totals.

MOS will make more than SR in its first month, probably close to SR domestic take during its OW. Saying it wont make as much as SR is just the most ridiculously stupid thing I have ever heard. Also the guy crying because it hast been promoted in Asia, WB, MOS, and Nokia all have a campaign in China right now where they are getting first dibs on the new Nokia MOS Lumia. Now if they were not promoting in Asia why even bother with letting China have first dibs?? :wall: Also just because a handful of movie theaters dont have MOS posters in some po dunk city doesnt mean Asia is completely left out of the promoting. WB knows what they are doing. They had success with all 3 Batman Films doing the same marketing. Marvel just loves to promote their trash. Without IM Disney/Marvel doesnt have one successful franchise outside of Avengers. I am not counting Spider Man because Sony owns him right now.

It's not poor thinking when it's the fact... fact on the ground, with people on the ground telling you.

It's poor thinking that just because TDKR and Hobbit earned a lot of money overseas, that means WB is doing the exact same type of promo for MOS.. it's just not true.. Both TDKR and Hobbit was promoted the hell out of them.. they had billboards, entire cinemas' walls plastered, cut outs, tv spots, etc, etc... but for some reason MOS is not promoted even a fraction of the way they promoted the Hobbit and TDKR...

I honestly believe Man of Steel will have a massive OW. How much that's the ultimate question. Based on survey results, many show MoS being the most anticipated movie of 2013 and voted biggest hit of 2013 over IM3.

It is very possible that Man of Steel can gross what The Dark Knight Rises could have earned if it had been released in 3D last summer. This movie will have a massive OW. I'm leaning towards $185 Million now. It sounds crazy but the buzz for this movie is insane!
