Something of note: out of 4,207 venues this movie is playing at 3,357 are 3D (that's over 80%) but only 31% of box office receipts are for 3D version

That along with what happened with the STID 3D sales could be signaling some major changes. Is this the beginning of the end of 3D?

lets hope so.

Ugh, I hope so, but I suspect theaters will keep trying to foist it on us to help pay for the stupid projectors they bought in the first place. :cmad:

Dont understand.

JAMES CAMERON!!!! :argh: :argh: :argh:

Hah I actually don't mind if every Cameron movie is offered in 3D from now on. The man is cinema's marker for technological improvements. Thats' why he has proprietary ownership over his 3D filming method. Everyone else? They should be banned from using it

I think MOS could outperform ASM in China.

60+ m

Possibly. Not off the table, but the thing is: Spider-Man has ALWAYS been popular in China even before the market changed when TASM came out so that's kind of a factor.

Oh yeah they'll milk it to the bone, but if only 30% of tickets sold were in 3D and 80% of the screens were 3D exclusive.. oh man.. they just lost a lot of money on MOS. I'd wager they'll slowly stop letting the studios dictate how many 3D screens they have to make available

You know that's not financially feasible, right? :oldrazz: That'd make him have more clout in the movie world than Nolan has with WB!

Well considering Cameron is already one half of the big-two I doubt there's anything that will give him more klout in the biz

lets hope so.

The 3D was so unnoticeable as well. Outside of the opening Krypton scenes i essentially forgot this film was even in 3D. I remember removing my glasses to see if i would notice any difference even?

If i see it a 2nd time it's for sure gonna be in 2D.

One should keep in mind both TDKR and ASM lost money in China since they opened together.

Definitely see it in 2D if you have a chance

I have no issue with 3D as an option. what I can't stand is when a studio purposefully skews the release ratio to force people to watch a movie in 3D. Happened with STID and it's happening with MOS. Making 80% of showings 3D only is a blatant middle finger to moviegoers

I actually enjoy 3d. I just think that if they're going to do it, it needs to be shot in 3d. No more of this conversion crap. It just doesn't hold up.

I know, i checked out the showings for 2D at my main theater and they are ridiculously low compared to all the 3D showings.

I hate to re-hash this but a few years ago when 3D just took off really, i'd have debates with ppl on this site about how i disliked 3D and they'd argue back "just go see the 2D version instead" and i remember saying how i bet theaters would start limiting those showings.

In the end i was totally right in that regards.

Of course. Anyone who argued with you was very short sighted. Studios have gotten greedy. People weren't really fighting against 3D because it was an even 50/50 split option but now it'll be different

And what's worse is less and less movies are shot in native 3D. And even less WILL be shot in native going forward because while it costs twice as much it literally has no effect on the box office difference. I wonder how long it will be before we start seeing the ration reversed

Yes, it's really annoying when 3D is getting the majority of the showings. If a movie isn't being shown in 2D on one of the best screens in my theater I'm probably not going to go see it. The worst part of 3D is that it prevents me from exploring the picture as I want as it puts more things out of focus.

I don't really care about shooting in native 3D though since that seems to be a matter of taste. For a superhero example Joss Whedon started shooting with 3D cams but went back to 2D and post-conversion because the first option just didn't work in his opinion.

:olife of pi

I saw that article but he seems to be using it's domestic OW as some sign for its WW gross, which i'm not sure is that correct?

To get to $800m MoS has to be received very well over-seas and we're not sure the full impact there yet?

I think this film's going to have legs. It's also got virtually no competition right now.

Probably around a billion I'd guess.

It's got major competition. Monsters U will be huge no matter what and WWZ is gunning for its exact same demo.

i dont know anyone who actually cares enough about wwz lol

i expect after earth box office
