Man of Steel Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 4

Random question: Is anyone else annoyed with that scene where screens flashing "YOU ARE NOT ALONE" and in different languages too? It's completely cheesy and unnecessary, they should have done a better take on the Zod's announcement of his demands, a more realistic, universally understood yet alien way. And that giant NOKIA logo on that phone is very annoying LOL.

I loved that scene, but why the hell are you discussing it in the box office thread??

So where are all the guys who were saying this would never break a $100m OW?

I say it does beteween 55 and 60 mill next weekend that gets it close to 200mill so 300mill domestic should be a lock

So what is the actual tally for the OW? Some places list $125m but i just saw on one of the news channels the ticker saying it grossed $113m for the weekend.

Which number are they counting for the June record?

I remember all the momentum ironman two had going for it and it landed around 130 with lots of line ups. Marvels most buzz movie pre avengers. I guess this speaks volumes about what WB has on their hands here.

Don't jump to conclusions yet. The marketing for this movie was phenomenal, so I'm not surprised it had a smash opening weekend.

We'll see if the movie has the legs to continue the momentum. Personally I don't see it. And no it's not just because I didn't like the film personally, but because I don't think it's enough of a "feel good" movie like most summer blockbusters of it's kind. I believe it is an empty, joyless experience and I'm not sure if a mind blowing action sequence an hour and a half into the movie is enough to push it beyond expectations.

I predict noticeable drop offs.

You were wrong predicting you were going to like this movie, what makes you think your prediction is right this time? :funny:

All big openers have noticable drop offs so that's not a dangerous prediction at all.

I'm even more impressed with it's international. than domestic numbers to be honest. I would love for it to do 400+mil internationally.

I know you are talking about domestic, but if you include the foreign BO, it's sitting at $196 million right now.

Some of them are now saying that it didn't do as well as IM3 or Toy Story 3. Pretty sad that they are hating so much.

Let them hate...

WB has got their new franchise. We've got our sequel. And Superman has finally come back to prominence for the genral public.

Assuming the actuals hold up this was a good performance. While people are somewhat befuddled by the Wal-Mart numbers, (it's hilarious to read the box office forums and hear people arguing over this) ultimately this is good enough to warrant the sequel and move forward.

What is more concerning is if this did well enough that Goyer and Snyder will be rewarded going forward. I really hope these two are removed from all future DC projects. I think WB has a good foundation here moving forward, but all bets are off if they bring Goyer back.

I'm totally fine with Goyer leaving but Snyder? With all due respect, NO WAY, MAN! Snyder's visual style is just what the DC universe needs. After seeing what he could do with a Superman vs Zod throwdown in this movie, just IMAGINE what a Superman vs Darkseid battle would look like in that trademark Snyder visual style. That could potentially be breathtaking. He just needs the right screenplay to work with.

So please, DC, keep Snyder onboard.

It's not competing with Iron Man 3 because it isn't a sequel or a fellow up to a movie that made 1.5bil. It's a reboot, it's competing with other reboots.

Agreed and Snyder isn't going anywhere, not after an OW like this and with audience approval in the 80 percentile for this film.

Agreed. I don't think Goyer needs to go like some but he should get a co-writer. But yeah, Snyder's style fit this movie perfectly.

i think it would be safe to speculate that if this opened internationally in the additional 27 overseas markets, then the international cume would have been more than double what it is now considering that a lot of those markets include a larger segment of major markets than the ones it has already been released in .. so perhaps a 60% international take of total box office by the end of its run might not be impossible, putting it in the 750m WW range ?

I wonder what the chance is that the weekend B.O. Gets revised upward tomorrow? I saw MOS for the third time at the 11.00 am showing here in Los Angeles, and it was sold out. Once again it got huge applause as the credits rolled. IMO the GA appear to like/love this movie a lot. Not sure how they estimate Sunday's take but I suspect it could come in a little higher when official numbers are released tomorrow. Here's a curious thing. People I have spoken to in line or that have said they plan on seeing MOS were or are fully aware that this is a more serious darker take on Superman. So you have to wonder what some of the more notable critics who took issue with this more serious take were expecting? To quote Lucious Fox, "Didn't you get the memo?"

It's hard to even argue with a person who is trying to spin this as a bad opening weekend.

The movie could drop off 70% next weekend for all I know and this is still an impressive weekend.

All that matters is what Nolan thinks. I thought goyer was his decision, as was Snyder.

I just meant that most fans seem to agree that Goyer needs help. Not sure what Christopher Nolan is thinking at this point, but isn't Goyer his friend? I highly doubt Goyer is going anywhere based on the fact that MOS originated with him and he has a close relationship with Nolan. I just hope Nolan has the sense to get more writing talent involved.

Even though I ultimately didn't like the film, I did say it would gross over 200 million this weekend. How far off will I be?

I'm more confident that MoS will break 300 million now than I was at it hitting 100 million OW. I've gone on Twitter to read some of the responses and it has been very good.

Ah yes, you were the one claiming this movie would be the second coming for mankind. :woot:

I'm sorry you didn't like the movie. If you claimed 200 worldwide then you were only off by a couple million. ($196 million)

Maybe I saw too many trailers. I just don't know...Still processing it.

I think the difference is the Walmart showings which were 12mil, 113 OW(record) + Walmart = 125mil

Or maybe you just don't like it? It's okay not to like a film. Plenty of films Hypers go crazy over that I think are ****.

Second this... The only major problem i see with this film (and I repeat, I still think it's a superb movie with it's flaws), is the script and 'story telling' as a whole...

so, yeah, replace goyer with better script writers... maybe keep him as the idea man like so many have said...
Goyer isn't terrible. He hits all the emotional beats and gets around to the right story points, but they just aren't amazing. MOS certainly wasn't any worse than any summer blockbuster out there.

After the Nolan Batfilms though, people want amazing to go with that realistic veneer. :cwink: And I think they tried to go serious enough here, that they should aim to go all the way next time.

So yes, put Jonah Nolan in on the script early on and I think we'd be good. :word:
