This Week's Predictions -

3. World War Z (Paramount) - $44.5 million N/A
4. This is the End (Sony) - $11.4 million -44%
5. Now You See Me (Summit) - $6.8 million -38%
I feel like that Saturday bump might be a bit high.
A boss came into my office today and the topic of Superman came up, without knowing I had seen it yet he mentioned that he heard it was good. Of course I told him it was great. Just one example of the WOM this film is getting.
With WWZ dropping in the RT score I don't see it making too much past 40m. I feel MU will do 76m, MOS will pull in 54m, and WWZ 42m
Everybody in my circle of family and friends LOVE watching films and go to the cinemas an watch dvds etc., yet I've never heard any of them mention the RT site. I am pretty sure none of them have ever seen the RT site.
But here's my theory on people who have read the MOS reviews at RT (or reviews elsewhere). From what I read, MOS has been criticized for having too much action and not enough humor or warmth. Those are compliments. Iron Joke 3 had too much humor (corny humor at that) and some would say not enough action (the entire trilogy showed too much of Stark and not enough Iron Man in my opinion). Also, I think people who remember the other Superman films would have feared that MOS would be too light-hearted/romantic. RT reviews put that fear to rest. The "complaints" of an overload of action was a good thing for MOS. I'm an action fan, and MOS is the greatest film ever made EVER. The greatest action film of all-time.
i dont care as long as we get sequels and A FREAKING DC CINIEMATIC UNIVERSE and a pretty ditty penny
BTW - someone posted that WB wants MOS2 out in 2014. That is crazy.
If WB does a sequel and if it is rushed it will be out in 2015. 2 year gap like TASM.
But I say that is crazy too. Wait 3 years. Do a great film creatively and that means take your time.
it's looking like half our wishes have been answered as MOS appears so far a financial success.
But the other half - a great Superman film - we did not get.
Let the next film if there is one be done slowly and let us next time get a great film creatively as well as financially.
Not that MOS was bad - it was good but should have been better.
I hope they put just as much action in mos2 as they did in mos1. My fear is that the worthless critics will dictate the director's choices in mos2 and make him dampen the action. Finally a superhero film got it right, and I hope the entire mos trilogy is done with the same gusto of mos1. As long as Nolan stays away from it, I think Snyder will deliver a 2nd masterpiece.
Maybe that is it.
I am a bit surprised. Forget RT, the overall reviews were so/so. SR got better reviews on RT and with legit critics.
But SR had little action. That has got to be part of the explanation.
I still want a great creative Superman film. Which is why if they do a sequel I will wait 3 years instead of two if it means the film is great like the Bat flicks and IronMan and Spidey 1.
Nolan was not all that involved with MOS despite assumptions. He backed off a long time ago and left it to the others. Or so I read a long while ago. Which is whys story-wise (pacing and character development) this film is no where near as good as Nolan's others.
But yes - for CBM's action is the key.
Hopefully we'll get MOS2 in 2014, but I doubt they'll film it in time for June 2014, so probably June 2015 (assuming its a June release again). Cavill will play Superman in the Justice League trilogy too don't forget. So that's 6 films as Superman. Maybe 7 or 8 if the MOS goes beyond a trilogy. So they better get started soon, or else Cavill will be playing Superman at age 45 (although now that I think it, that's not a bad thing).
I am frankly surprised that MOS is holding up so far as well as it is given both the RT score and the "legit" reviews. Nothing to write home about.
If your boss is reading reviews or RT he would not think it is good. I assume he knows someone who saw it and they told him it was. Which is fine - that is WOM.
RT I can discount but critics generally did not especially like the film.
MOS is lucky. Usually reviews overall (not just RT) trend a film.
Not always though. So far MOS seems to be holding up despite reviews and Star trek did not despite in it's case good reviews.
This weekend's drop will tell if MOS can make it to 300 million domestic. If the drop is less than 55% or so it might.
My domestic range was 250 - 300. It looks like it may come close to the top of my range. This is a surprise to me but it is what it is. I underestimated a bit (my final estimate) based on numbers so far.
I am happy of course - only wish the film was better. It will not be remembered as a great CBM film as Iron Man, the Nolan bat flicks and the first Spidey films are.
If it gets a sequel the last thing WB should do is rush it. Wait 3 years. Give us a great film. I am still waiting for that great Superman film. Though I did enjoy MOS I give it an 8.0.
You don't need 3 years between movies, 2 years is plenty. Spider-Man 2, one of the best comic book films ever made IMO, came out 2 years after the first Spider-Man.
Cavill is set for just 3 films from what I've read. He is moving into the big-league now as an actor and though I wish he'd do more than 3 I suspect he will do the Bale thing.
BTW, Henry as I said before was an inspired choice. I didn't feel that at first but he quickly won me over.
I am a bit surprised the female demo for the film was not great - though it was somewhat better than for the average CBM.
My girlfriend thinks Henry is hot - frankly I don't see it - LOL!
