WOM is good everyone I know likes the film and people cheered at both of my screenings.

It least SR has a better score, better music & a better Superman.

300 million tops and thats mostly because people were interested in all the talk about the CGI effects.

Better score? Better music? Of course! Singer took the easy way out and left his creative mindset at home! How puny is it to retread a classic and legendary film while trying to reintroduce Superman to the modern audience and expecting it to be accepted as new and fresh?

A better Superman?

Impregnating Lois Lane in the Fortress of Soltitude, not having the smarts to realize he passed on his seed, erasing Lois's mind and then taking off for 5 years to not only leave Earth of his protection without any explanation, but leaving Lois hanging (the woman is SUPPOSEDLY loves) without ever saying goodbye.

Returns from Krypton 5 years later to come back and realize Earth has moved on from his hiatus, including Lois Lane, who now has a child and is engaged to Perry Whites nephew, all the while being the culprit of being absent in Luthor's trial, which got him off in the first place (nice priorities, Supes!)

What does he do?

Instead of owning up and excepting Lois's anger towards him and how 5 years is a long time to be gone without a trace or whimper, he stalks Lois outside of her home, one to whom she shares with Richard and Jason, and makes a move to carry her out to explain who he is and tortures her with his body warmth, only to see LOIS pull away and admit Richard is a good man. Yeah, real nice Supes, what a better Superman!

Oh yeah, how could he be a better Superman when he is too dumb enough to know or focus on a whole island full of Kryptonite?

Man of Steel embraces Clark Kent to a new world and understanding his orphan story forced to act and stay true to his upbringing as an Earthling child, one who he isn't one of.

MOS was ballsy and I applaud this new direction no other director would even THINK to have the gahonas to move into.

Superman Returns was a last gasp and showed the ultimate FEAR in letting this character turn a new leaf out of an 1978 era and riding Chris Reeve's coattails in 2006 was an epic FAIL of trying to tread water within an outdated version of the character.

Man of Steel, again, was full steam ahead in reintroducing a new set of rules for the character but holding true to his iconic image and that's why Man of Steel completely BLOWS AWAY Superman Returns and it showed in his OW BO numbers.

I think it should be obvious they chose June because they wanted Father's Day Weekend. Just look at some of the TV spots. Look at how this film was marketed. The father angle was practically shoved down everyone's throats.
If they diid choose June for that reason, they were right to do so .
Superman is a PERFECT fit for Father's Day , and it worked.

I think word of mouth is hurting the second week totals more than WWZ.

What!?!? You're kidding, right!?!? Everyone LOVED this movie! The critics don't know what they're talking about!! Look at the IMDB user reviews! 9's and 10's across the board! Superman is back!!!

.......

I'm sorry guys but this has nothing to do with the marketing or the release date. The marketing was there. People showed up for this movie. It opened huge. If the drop offs from here on out are more considerable than previously thought, then you're going to have to accept the fact that maybe... just maybe, the movie isn't being as well received as you think it is.

Okay. Here we go.

Despite its flaws, I liked this movie. I want their to be a sequel. But I do think word of mouth is mixed. Not as mixed as the critics but I don't get the sense of universal love for this movie.

And I'm talking beyond our group of friends and members on this forum.

Less significant drop then last 2 iron man movies, Hunger Games, an all Twilight movies which all are considered success. Not bad.

Yeah, that's how I see it too.

Or maybe, JUST MAYBE, MOS WAS well received as we thought (those applauds at the end of every viewing I've been to says a lot) but the drops could be a byproduct of a second week opening of stiff competition of a dominant Pixar movie that is sure to take away ticket sales in the short-term.

MOS is well received by the mass's. WOM is awesome. It should make around 700-800 mil, which is an outstanding start to a rebooted franchise with an edgier take on a timeless character worth updating.

I would never use IMDB as proof of anything. It's not a good indicator or cross section of the GA. It's loaded with fanboys conducting fanboy wars. I don't know that there is a polling site that's free of the fanboy effect. Perhaps CinemaScore but then that's only relevant for the first day of release, maybe the first weekend but that's about it. It's be nice if we had a site that was just casual viewer/GA only but sadly we don't have something like that because ultimately the fanboys would invade it.

white house down will bomb. lol :p
In this crowded marketplace , it is probably the best spot for WHD.
And right before the big Holiday weekend .
So the drop in its second weekend will be less than normal.

Zack and Debbie Snyder accomplished their goal in how and why they were the right fit to resurrect the Super-franchise.

Their outlook was: Let the reactions be mixed, that was their intentions in the first place judging by their style and creation and their vision is exactly what the Super-franchise needed.

I'm reading "Man of Steel; Inside the Legendary World of Superman" and a part stuck of to me in this book.

Debbie Snyder says she'd rather have this film be talked about and/or argued about than to have it completely forgotten. MOS got people talking about Supes again, regardless of a mixed crowd.

Superman Returns was the movie critics talked about but soon-after, seemingly forgotten. I don't see the same thing with MOS. People will argue, talk about it and have STRONG opinions, but it WON'T be a forgotten movie simply because this is a new beginning and take on a beloved hero.

True... you can't even give your own opinion on boards like this if it was anything negative towards the movie...

Even after saying tons of times i loved the show and gave it a 9/10, the moment i mentions a few aspects of the movie i didn't like, you get jumped on and attacked...

So, you are right that out of 1 person who speaks their mind on the 'negative' there are probably 9 who won't say a thing... (this is same with being Political Correct in many things.... )

Taking my own friends as 'population', it was indeed a mixed feeling... there were a lot of things they agree with the critics, but they weren't so bad that they would have rated this movie a negative... they probably rate it a 7/10 instead of say a 9/10 because of the flaws... i think the critics on the other hand gave it a fail not because the flaws is so huge that the movie is totally un-watchable and un-recommendable, but because of their own 'high expectation of Superman'... WWZ had similar flaws like 'one dimensional, repeated actions, boring, etc' but got a pass... you can see that the critic's score is almost exact between WWZ and MOS, but one passed with flying colors whereas the other failed miserably...

Actually it's a .6% steeper drop than IM2's 2nd Friday. Not that this is really relevant considering different times of the year these all came out.

Dude, I didn't attack you. The very idea of doing so because of a difference of opinion is absurd. People have varying opinions and everyone in entitled to theirs. And ultimately I liked the movie myself. I'm settling into around a 6.5/10 rating for it which means I think it's nothing great but ok on the whole.

is the WOM really overwhelmingly positive?

Honestly most people I know saw it but said they were disappointed. I know that theyre are people who liked it clearly even in the GA. To use the RottenTomatoes system I would estimate the crowd reaction at about 60%-65%, which isnt bad at all, but I honestly dont know where people are getting that the WOM is very positive.

That being said I dont understand why the GA wont like this. I mean imo it's like a better made Transformers. It has a sh** ton of action, based on a well known characters. I didnt like this that much but Im surprised when people in the GA say they dont

I wasn't talking about you :yay:

Sorry about the confusion.. i liked your posts..

I just hated some who goes on a personal attack level instead of just argueing the points..

It's better

I'm looking at the BOM numbers right now. IM2 dropped 70.5% on it's 2nd Friday. MoS dropped 71.1%. It's not really up for debate. Numbers are what they are. Now when the actuals come in this may change but as of now MoS dropped harder(but we're still taking a very small difference here).

Oh, ok. My mistake.:O

If MOS makes 40 million this weekend then I say that is a pretty great second weekend. Over 200 million in its first 10 days is pretty darn impressive no matter how you slice it. However, if it fails to meet that 40 million threshold and especially if it has a big dip or only a small increase from Friday to Saturday then I do think that is cause for concern. I think Sunday night we will have a better feel for where this is going especially because that is when we will get the international numbers.

It isn't.. it's mixed.. some of my friend hated it, some loved it... and most mixed about it... but overall, favorable...

The things the GA complains about seems very different from the things Superman fans complains about... like in this forum...

for instance, the killing of Zod was a non-issue at all.. in fact, the two times i watched it, people seem happy about it... some even clapped... Zod is the bad guy, Supe's the good guy, good guy snaps bad guy's neck, world is saved.. what is there not to like? They didn't come with teh pre-conceived notion that Superman DOES NOT KILL EVER!, so it's not a deal breaker..

The consistent complain is lack of humor, too dull/dark, cavill spots mostly one dimensional character like 'moody' all the time, no magic uplifting moments... lack of character dev, too choppy, basically what critics says about the movie... but all in all they still liked it more than they disliked it...

Set up for a 60%+ drop for the weekend. Not good.

Obviously competition cut into MoS second weekend but for all the talk of good/great WOM, it wasn't strong enough to give it a better hold. I hope it stabilizes after this weekend to cross $300 million domestic still.

I think historically the GA has a higher expectation of a superhero film than they do for something like Transformers. And they should. How good a story can something based on a toy line or board game be anyway. But I think the GA understands that superhero movies are based of pre-existing stories and so are literary properties(even if they are just from comic books).

So the burden of satisfaction is different.
