The Last Jedi Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker (VIII)

Since Han Solo died in the last movie, Disney should continue the trend and kill off Luke Skywalker next :)
Well sadly first they are going to have officially kill Leia's character, well since....:waa:
I doubt they'll have her just disappear, but imply a more magnanimous sacrificial end.
Maybe since they've been forced into that position, they will make a point of Luke surviving!

They have other options. They can use CGI or they can recast the character.

I'm sure they're looking at all the paths they can take to decide what would be the best way to go. They don't necessarily have to kill her off.

Well they have even more options then just recast/CGI, again there are clever editing and possible use of unused footage/deleted scenes in mixture with many of these other things as well.

They could always maybe figure out a way to take footage from Episode VIII and transplant it to Episode IX.

I also thought it was a given Rey and Luke would have an important bond.

This one being more "fun" is interesting. Rian is good at adding bits of subtle humor here and there.

That's the only kind of curious bit, and I wonder if he holds to that.

Everybody else, from Kasdan to Driver to Boyega, has called it "weird and dark"... But I guess that doesn't mean it can't be fun, too. ESB is a perfect example of both, I think.

No, but Kasdan said he read the script for VIII and called it "weird and dark" in a good way.

I suspect the movie is still going to have a lot of darkness in there. Rian is probably just trying to avoid the cliche of every director making a sequel that says "We're totally gonna go Empire on this one", given the context of him literally making the middle chapter of a new Star Wars trilogy. Also, if you're expecting it to be super dark, then it may inevitably fall short of that. I think he's managing expectations a bit. It's also important to note that Empire still did have plenty of humor and levity in it. Yoda is downright hilarious at first.

I actually thought that comment was a breath of fresh air and shows he's focused on telling a good story and not just what the tone should be. Although I do hope the humor is less "Marvel" than some of the stuff in TFA. There were a few moments that crossed the line into gag-territory for me.

LOL, I'm not saying they don't have these^ obvious methods as options to keep her character "alive" for the next movie. What I'm saying is just cause they do have them doesn't mean they will use them to that end.

I think it's now more likely they will use those methods to create her "end" not her continuation. Either re-edit for the end of VIII, or the start of IX.

As far as Luke, the topic here; my instinct was it's him who would likely have been played as dying at the very end, (paralleling Obi-Wan and then Yoda) passing the mantle to the next gen of young Jedi(Rey who then sees his force-ghost). While Leia would have been the one who survived them, guiding the resistance into this closing chapter of the saga.

Now, with Fisher passing, however I feel they'll likely flip it, and instead write a scene for Leia dying, and now ending with Luke being the one to outlive them.

Again, not saying they don't have techniques to keep her character "alive", just saying they will use them to different ends. And it's Luke who will get to live, close out the IX chapter of the saga.
Probably sunset, looking out at the horizon, remembering Han & Leia. :cwink:
While Rey, Fin and Poe fly off to more implied adventures.

I kinda want to see a scene like this with Rey & Kylo-Ren

Heh, I always felt so sorry for that poor Imperial officer at 0:22, he seems so freaked out when he finds out the Boss is coming by!

"The Emperor's coming HERE???"

And yes, something similar with Luke and Kylo would be awesome.

I wonder if they'll ever do any flashback scenes with Mark Hamil being de-aged, via CGI, for that sequence. Would you guys be opposed or for it if they went that route?

It kind of sucks to think though that for all that Luke accomplished in his crusade against the Empire, that he didn't get that far with his new Jedi Order and how easily his rise to the top crumbled because of the Knights of Ren.

I would have loved it if he had at least gone on to do more bigger things with his new Jedi Order before they eventually caved in to the Knights of Ren and Kylo's betrayal.

The growth of Luke's character in the original trilogy is one of the hallmark pillars of the series. I hope they continue this in Episode VIII by showing that Luke had managed to live a fulfilled life post ROTJ

I hope they clean Luke up a bit at some point. The long-haired look doesn't work for me so much. I really like how Hamill looked at the premiere of TFA.

Throw on some Jedi robes and that's perfect.

Man I hope they don't kill Luke. Between Han in the last movie, and Carrie in real life, I don't think I could handle it.

Let Luke live, he didn't deserve this. All he ever wanted was to go have an adventure and pick up some power converters, and now everyone he knows is dead or is evil or was evil and now dead.

...he'll always have R2...:cwink:

Do you like the new Star Wars title, The Last Jedi? I guess it would be weird if you said, “No, I don’t.”

I mean, I was told way back when we were doing the film what it was and I really liked it. I didn’t realize, though, that actual phrase is in the crawl for Episode VII.

Oh yeah, you’re right. I didn’t think of that until you just said that.

By the way, when you read The Force Awakens script, the very first two words are, “Luke Skywalker has vanished.” Ooh, baby, this is going to be good! I’m going to have a great part! But down later in the crawl, and I can’t quote it exactly, I saw on Twitter this morning, “until Skywalker, the last Jedi, is destroyed.” I thought, well, I didn’t know that! I’ve only seen it twice – VII, I mean. And I was wondering why they would use that phrase if it was used that way, because it specifies me. And I think it’s very ambiguous. Is the last Jedi Leia? Is it me?

Or is it Rey?

Is it someone we’ve never met before? Or is it Rey? Because she seems to have the force as well. So we’ll all wait and see.

Another interview:

Mark Hamill said:
“In 7, you discover Luke is a hermit on this island. There’s so much unsaid about where he’s been and what he’s done. Actors like to write their own backstory. You want to figure out what you’ve done and where you’ve been. But I realized that wasn’t really important to the story of Force Awakens. I still made it up myself. I tried to show it to J.J. [Abrams] and he was accommodating but basically patted me on my head, gave me a cookie and made me go away. Because whatever. Make it up.

They allude to things that happened, but to a certain extent, it’s not Luke’s story anymore. But I think he’s an important part of the overall arc of the saga. And again, there’s a lot of mystery about him, even within [The Last Jedi]. So you have to fill in your own backstory. I’m sure there will be comics books and video games and novels that tell the story. I shared with Rian a lot of my own things. I have to relate to things that are real in my own life to understand where Luke is at this point in his life.”

Kathleen Kennedy sensed that maybe the audience thought that we weren’t going to get much more from Luke Skywalker in this movie either, so she said, “I’m just gong to break in here and make sure everybody realizes, he is so significant important to this next film. Mr. Modesty.”

Luke's lines "It's so much bigger." Bigger than light, dark and even a balance between the two?

Unity? I know there is tons in canon that would go against this but... What if there was an original Force religion that encompassed it all? That is what Luke has found in his exile? There was Unity once?

I wonder if Luke will have a showdown with his nephew Kylo in Episode 8 or if Luke ends up fighting Snoke? Either way I am excited but I have a feeling Luke either dies in 8 or he will die in 9

Watching Mark's tribute to Carrie Fisher panel now. I could listen to this man talk for days, he's such a great storyteller.
