The Last Jedi Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker (VIII)

Fandango - MARK HAMILL HINTS THAT THIS MAY BE THE END OF LUKE SKYWALKER’S JOURNEY

First up was Mark Hamill, who reprises the role of Luke Skywalker in the film. We asked Hamill how this version of Luke is different from the previous one. “Well he’s a completely different person,” he said. “He had an arc [in the original trilogy], and I think Carrie and Harrison admitted their characters were pretty much the same throughout, but Luke was always changing. Now we have this 30-year gap between the films, so a lot of if is conjecture. It’s not specifically my story – Rey is now the protagonist.”

Hamill went on to admit that he wasn’t happy originally with the path Luke takes in this film. “I think you’ll find some things that’ll surprise you,” he said. “They certainly surprised me. I said to Rian, I think I fundamentally disagree with everything you’ve decided for me. Now having said that, I have to accept it, get my mind around it and do my best to realize your vision. Once I got into it, a lot of my fears went away.”

On whether Luke is going to stick around past The Last Jedi, Hamill hints that he may not. “That’s why I enjoy Rogue One so much… because I’m not in it. This is a little too high-profile for me.” On whether this is the last we’ll see of Luke, Hamill smirked. “To be determined.”

Luke will definitely be in Episode 9

He is the chosen one after all

ABC Nightline said:
Daisy Ridley: Yeah [there were some big surprises even for me when I read the script]. I went to Rian's office and I was like, 'we need to have a talk about what's happening here'.

Mark Hamill: When I read, I told Rian [that] I fundamentally disagree with virtually everything you've decided about my character. But it might be a good sign because I was really wrong about [Episode] VII. I said, 'when I turn around the audience is going to be hootin' and hollerin' because it's such an obvious cheat.' I didn't forsee John Williams incredible music, and the shots of Daisy, the build-up to it all, so...I was never happier to be wrong.

...

They did mention during the panel that Rey meeting Luke is like a situation of how you wouldn't actually want to meet one of your heroes.

My question is, is Luke and Rey's relationship off to a rocky start for genuine character reasons or is Luke pulling a Yoda and testing her in some way before revealing his true nature? And will that true nature be what Rey wants or expects as well?

I don't want to speculate on the meaning.

Just saying, predictions for these films almost always turn out to be wrong:

- Snoke is Plagueis.
- Rey's staff is a lighstaber
- Rey's staff is Plagueis' staff
- Snoke is a Muun
- Rey is a Solo
- Rey is a Kenobi

If Luke Skywalker does kick the bucket sometime in the new trilogy, I really hope that his final contribution to the galaxy will have led to something more hopeful in the end.

Aside from his victory against the Empire, Luke really hasn't accomplished much. Heck, it would have been nice if there had been other big threats that would have been established before the rise of the First Order that Luke would have confronted and defeated as well.

'Other than being the key figure in overthrowing the Galactic Empire and removing the yoke of a fascist government from the majority of citizens of the galaxy... What have you done for us lately Luke?" :o

Stories are about drama and conflict. Luke succeeding is less dramatic than him facing set backs. And the First Order is not the Empire... YET. The New Republic was still established, so until the destruction of the core planets in TFA Luke was a key part in laying the groundwork for a new galactic order for most people based on democracy and freedom. So he did accomplish a lot.

Aaand the TheVileOne's year long personal vendetta against the Plagueis theory mannifests itself again ;)

See, I wish TFA would have made it more clearer then regarding the status of the (New) Republic.

I mean if the New Republic are the ones in charge, then why does Leia's army need to call themselves "The Resistance"? That's more of an appropriate title for a group of people going up against the larger system/entity.

And it feels like there was no brief periods of peace that came about Luke's involvement in destroying the empire. Once the Emperor and Vader were gone, the Empire collapsed. But it seems like the First Order quickly took their place.

Also, Luke's new Jedi Order ended with the inadvertent creation of Kylo Ren, who would become a new scourge of the galaxy. None of Luke's students ever made it out or made a impact with his teachings.

The "Resistance" is I think the forces opposing the First Order in the territory they control. The Republic is it's own distinct entity. The Resistance was receiving support from the Republic. If I'm wrong someone please correct me.

You are right. The New Republic does not see the First Order as a threat, they are in their eyes a small band of wanna be Empire nuts that stay on the fringe and cause no problems. There was clearly peace because no one took the First Order seriously. Hux's speech reveals a lot of that. So when they attacked it shocked everyone.

Rian said that you will learn more about the First Order and what happened. He said that all that happened in TFA happens for a reason. He confirmed that the Starkiller base destroying Hosnian Prime is very significant because now the entire galaxy is in complete chaos.

It's clear that the bad guys did not control the galaxy though, it was the peaceful New Republic, but sadly they were shattered by the First Order somewhat because no one listened to Leia's feelings on the matter. Which Bloodline goes into a little more.

But it will be interesting to see more about the First Order and what their plans have been all along in TLJ.

There was a period of peace after the Imperial remnants retreated into the outer realms. They returned years later as the First Order, after which Leia and some others formed the Resistance as an ancillary group to the New Republic. The Republic did not take the FO seriously as a threat and did not want to start another war. The fact that there seem to be Republic ships in the space battle shots in the trailer suggest there could be some sort of melding of the Resistance and the Republic.

I have a feeling that is where Laura Dern's character comes in. There may be tension though, and lots of different factions which should be interesting.

It was always rooted in flawed mindsets. I had people private messaging me that everything was only further proof that Snoke was Plagueis.

Leia will probably have her hands full with political wrangling. I could see some in what is left of the Republic's government even having the mindset that it was her insistence that they get involved with the Resistance that put them in the situation they are in now.

looks like Luke back in Black.

Looks brown to me, which I'm really happy about. I wasn't too sure I liked the idea when MSW said Luke would be wearing black again like his ROTJ costume. It's the Sith/Dark Sider colour and it made sense for ROTJ given Luke's conflict and the temptation by Vader and the Emperor. I felt like it's something he's moved past.

Wearing dark brown, rain soaked garb is more befitting of a Jedi Master, even one who may have lost his path and is having a crisis of faith.

Not even a week, and I am sick of all the Grey Jedi talk.
