So I finally have to beat the game yesterday & I have such mixed emotions over it.
The game itself from the very beginning up until Anderson dies is a complete blast. It was amazing & one of my favorite gaming experiences ever. I loved every second of it, I loved how epic & important some of the battles felt. The final battle on Tuchanka & Rannoch in particular. I felt like the smallest decision I made in the past two games mattered. For example, before I did Tali's loyalty mission in ME2 I did some of the ones that involved gangsters. I chose alot of renegade points during the missions against mercs & whatnot, so my Paragon wasn't as high as it could have been in her loyalty mission. Well, she got exiled & this would eventually cause to the fall of the Geth in my playthrough. This was a really sad scene & I actually felt something for the lost of this fictional race of robots, especially Legion.
I loved all of the character interactions in the game. I would have liked some personal missions with them like in ME2, but it's understandable considering the galaxy is ending. I LOVED how the crew would occasionally roam around the ship & interact with the other squadmates.
So as I said from the moment the game starts until Anderson dies, it was an amazing experience. But then it goes down hill fast. The ending was absolute BS in my eyes. Why did Bioware felt the need to add some lame ass twist to the game? Why did they have to over complicate things? What the hell was wrong with either a happy ending where the galaxy wins or a bad one where the Reapers win, with some major differences based on your actions through the series.
Why did they feel the need to go along with the current trend in gaming where to be tragic they have to kill the main character? "DAWW Halo: Reach, RDR, LA Noire, God of War 3 & MW3 DID IT SO WE HAVE TO DO IT TOO!" (Though it did make sense story wise in Reach & RDR). Why did they have to kill Shepard, no matter what you did, leave the fate of the galaxy in question & basically leave your crew to die on some jungle planet?
I just don't understand why they had to such a f***ing stupid twist, why didn't they keep it simple? It's not like the Mass Effect franchise is a series where twists like this happen often. This ending wouldn't be that bad if it was a series like Alan Wake that always has surprise twists like this.
Why couldn't my Shepard stop the Reapers without sacrificing himself? Why couldn't he live on & help rebuild the galaxy with Tali, Garrus & the rest of his friends? Why!? I don't care if it would have been cheesy, there should have been the choice to have an ending like that. & the alternative where Shepard screws up & the galaxy gets destroyed by the Reapers with many variants in between.
As for the multiplayer, it's a blast. I love it, though I wish there was an endless wave mode along with the mode we have now. It's sort of addicting, I love ranking up my various characters. I just wish the damn game would give me better Assault Rifles already!
Like I said, I don't know what to think about Mass Effect 3. Like 97% of the game is amazing, but the ending just f***s up the series. It makes playing the game again seem sort of pointless. It also puts the fate of the franchise in question. I always expected a sequel that takes place after ME3, that's much more small in-scale (perhaps about Mercs or something?) & you get to see the consequences of Shepard's actions. But with the Mass Relays destroyed, that doesn't seem like it's going to happen.
I'd personally rank Mass Effect 3 as my second favorite in the series after Mass Effect 2. Though, it's cutting it close to being my least favorite because of that god damn ending.
P.S. Zaeed's small ass role bugged me. He didn't even explain why he didn't join Shepard on the Normandy. >:C
