Matt Reeves To Direct The Upcoming Batman Solo - Part 2

I've always wanted a Batman film set in the 30's, so hearing the Detective Noir influence is good news to my ears. It may not end up being set in the 30's but even if it gives off that classic vibe that's a decent compromise.

My biggest wish for this movie would be that it steers clear of big, bombastic CGI ridden set pieces.

I would be quite happy if there were hardly any action scenes at all.

Give us the character study Reeves is hinting it’s going to be. Give us a clever, intricate mystery a la Shutter Island/ Seven / Maltese Falcon / Sixth Sense.

Give us something different from what we’ve already seen.

Even though I don’t like how his interpretation of the character was handled and we all saw this coming a million miles away, I’m actually much more bummed out about Ben leaving than I thought I’d be. I support and understand why the decision was made, but it’s still a little disappointing to not get his self directed film, the reason any of us were even excited about him in the first place.

I could use some more positive news to counteract this. Can they announce that Leto is done too? That would make me feel a lot better about all of this.

See, to me, it’s incredibly positive news that he’s gone.

Affleck agreed to play Snyder’s Batman. He signed up for, and went along with that awful, awful rendition willingly. He didn’t deserve to carry on.

Better a new man, in a full reboot. That way we’ll get a good Batman again, with any luck. That was never going to happen all the time Affleck was in the part.

I didn't necessarily hate Affleck's Batman but the audience generally rejected it. Time to move on.

I think there were some positive takeaways from his Batman, and I was averse to the idea at first. At the same time, I maintain that going for the older 20-year veteran version of Batman and a more extreme version of Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns Batman was the WRONG choice.

I think you can play around with that in like a standalone Dark Knight Returns or a standalone one-off film, but not in the first film in a shared extended cinematic universe. That was the wrong choice.
I have to agree, but I do argue that made for an interesting contrast to the younger, newbie Superman who was just starting out his superhero career. I think Snyder wanted to have it both ways — he always wanted to realize a TDKR-like Batman on screen while also trying to make it work as part of the shared universe. Sadly, while that idea sounds interesting as a standalone elsewords tale it just doesn’t work as part of a shared cinematic universe in the long run.

It’s like if the MCU started their version of Spider-Man off as the 40 year old scluby Peter Parker who had already been at the superhero game for 22 years like we saw with Peter B. Parker from Into The Spider-Verse instead of smartly going back to the roots of the character as a fifteen year old wet-behind-the-ears rookie superhero.

So, I'm all for a younger Batman....but I don't want a beginning of his career Batman. Snyder had the right impulse to give us a seasoned Batman who had been doing this for a little while and had several encounters with his rogues gallery. I'd like to see a compromise. Not an old, world weary Batman but a...middle of his career Batman. Maybe a Batman who has been at it for almost a decade, in his mid 30's or something, still at his peak physically and still has a lot of history with his rogues, with Robin (or robins) and established history with his iconic supporting cast.

Yeah, that is a good point. Perhaps it’s just the blind hope from 2013 in me. Hopefully brighter days are ahead.

Totally agree with this.

Enough with Frank Miller Batmans. Let’s have the mid thirties, main comics continuity Batman for once!

Ben Affleck officially announced to be leaving the role on his predecessor Christian Bale’s birthday(funny enough, Bale and Dick Cheney share the same birthday). January 30th.

Ain’t this a b*tch?

Basically, default Batman: TAS Batman. I'd be fine with that.

It's a Batman movie. There will be action.

If you go from the date of his announcement, yeah. But if you go from the date of his actual movies-- as we do for everyone else in a CBM role-- it's 2016-2017. Which seems less impressive.

Indeed. Casting announcements, to announcements of an actor leaving, are not the way to chronicle an actor’s time in a role. It should be from first film to last film.

You're saying Affleck couldn't direct a good Batman movie?
