MCU: The Marvel Cinematic Universe Official Discussion - Part 1

There is a 99% chance that Marvel will not retcon IM3.

Considering the humorous nature of the shorts - excluding the Peggy one-it is likely that Kingsley's return is going to be in the comedic vain.

likely, but not certain.

I'm just keeping my mind open.

Wow. This is amazing news. Looking forward to all shows and the potential here is great. I, of course, wanted a DD film and wouldn't have minded waiting but how can I NOT be excited about a series? Can't wait to see what they give us.

I don't agree with Bob Iger's comments about DD not being that popular though. The comment may refer well to IF, Cage and Jones but DD? Nah. So you mean to tell me Ant-Man and GOTG are more popular than DD? Ok.

Regardless, great news on these shows.

Speaking of size and scope of the MCU, Thor: The Dark World was just released in the US and it marks the 8th film Marvel Studios has graced the silver screen with. Putting it among the top contenders for shared universes of live action feature length films:

James Bond - 23 films (20 if you consider it rebooted)
Star Trek - 12 films
Marvel Cinematic Universe - 8 films
Harry Potter - 8 films

There are of course many film franchises that have a great number of installments (Friday the 13th, Batman, etc) but few of them are not only considered canonical with each other but also so interconnected and well constructed.

Along with 8 movies (and 4 more in the works) we are also halfway through the first season of a television show, 5 one-shots as well as several tie-in comics. Are netflix series' just around the corner? Only time will tell. I just think the universe deserves some love for surpassing Harry Potter in scope. :D

Since when has TV ever really portrayed the legal profession/Criminal Justice System accurately? Law & Order is better than most, but it still pushing things a lot.

Like I said, I don't want realism. I just want something better than the truly awful stuff in the first DD movie.

I gave the theme of Phase 2 anouther thought. Could it be that the thing all Phase 2 movies have in common is that not everything is as it seems? Tony thought to have figured out the identity of the Mandarin but found out he found Trevor Slattery instead. Thor thought [blackout] Loki died honorable [/blackout] which of course wasn't true at all. We know that in Cap 2 [blackout] SHIELD agents are not who the seem to be but HYDRA agents instead [/blackout] and I guess some kind of twist will be in GOTG too. AoS involves 4 out of the six main characters with somewhat mysterious past and/or secrets.

So, since the theme of Phase 1 was the assembling of the Avengers and the origns of the heroes and the Phase got subtitled Avengers Assembled, could the subtitle of Phase 2 have something to do with all the twists and secrets?

Of course, all legal series are dramatized, but that doesn't mean that any of them should do things that are completely made up and not accurate at all whatsoever. There still has to be some appearance of credibility when lawyers do certain things. While not everyone will know, especially those with no legal background, there are viewers who do have a legal background or have had some legal experience in some way, whether it's sitting on a jury or just being in court.

In the Fox DD movie (even the Director's cut), Matt Murdock was doing things that were completely rookie mistakes. Not only mistakes but things he shouldn't even be doing at all. It's like the writers just saw bits and pieces of various legal dramas and cobbled them together without actually understanding what was going on in those copied scenes.

He can't be giving testimony, making part of his closing or opening argument (which was it now? who knows?) etc while questioning the witness. And the judge allowed that! Things happen in a certain chronological order in court. A closing argument does not occur during a cross examination (or examination in chief - I don't remember which one it was since it's been a while since I watched it). Even a casual viewer who has seen enough legal dramas would know that. It really was a cobbled together scene which was completely bungled. The whole thing was totally nonsensical.

So at least the law scenes in the DD TV series ought to be on par with some of these other legal dramas and not like something a teenager wrote who just saw bits and pieces and had no real understanding of what he was seeing.

Like I said, I don't want realism. I just want something better than the truly awful stuff in the first DD movie.

This completely.

If a Hulk sequel happens, do you think any of the cast from the first would return?

I would hope so. Ross and Sterns mostly. Though Tim Blake Nelson may not (he was friends with Norton so he'd prolly opt out if he could.) For whatever reason I think Liv Tyler and Mark Ruffalo would make for an odd couple.

Really this is a big reason I want to see a Planet Hulk film. Then you don't need anyone but Banner. (And maybe Sterns.)

I'd be glad if they could get rid of Tyler. Keep Hurt and Nelson and recast Betty, then all is good

Wanna see Michael Emerson as Sterns/Leader. Anyone with me?

Sure! if they recast him thatd be a decent choice. Especially since he should be virtually unrecognizable with all the makeup/prosthetics.

A more expensive version of John Carter of Mars!? :lmao:

But seriously, Planet Hulk would have to be Avatar-level in terms of production costs, almost twice what some of the other MCU movies are budgeted at. That's a pretty high mark to hit, a huge risk.

On the other hand, there's not really a lot for Hulk to do on Earth. Maybe a nice tense indie movie.

Oh! I know! A found footage film with the Hulk! That could be utterly awesome. Rick Jones as the camera man! That could be relatively awesome as a small film and really get us into Banner/Hulk's mind/heart. I'd watch that. The villain almost wouldn't matter, and this whole chase genre thing could actually work when your eye is on the ground like that. The budget would be low enough to have plenty Hulk and it'd just be great.

I'd be onboard for something like that.

Anything is better than bringing TBN back, but Emerson would be friggin gold.

Dat Ben Linus.

I wouldn't be too broken up if they didn't choose to use The Leader at all...although there's plenty of ways a good writer could modernize him to make him relevant, he's one of those old-timey Dr. Eeevil types that don't necessarily translate that well to the screen.

I'd definitely love to see Hurt come back as Ross, though. I'd even be up for him turning Red.

How would you guys feel about The Hood being a major force in the Defenders show?

General Ross is Hulk's #1 enemy, regardless of what anyone says. Red Hulk was a perfectly legitimate way to turn him into a physical threat for the Jade Giant. Unfortunately, the stories were obscenely stupid. Still, I enjoy the concept, and I'd love the see Ross become a Gamma monster (though maybe not a literal red copy of Bruce Banner's Hulk.)

Leader is a bit pulpy and silly, but I'd still like to see him on film eventually.

Well, he'll be called Arrow by then, and maybe even adopt a certain colour in the future.

With Seagate in All Hail the King how big are the chances they have cast Luke Cage already?

I don't think that they've cast him yet because they haven't even announced who will be involved behind the scenes.
