MCU: The Marvel Cinematic Universe Official Discussion - Part 1

Doing some quick checking on other Netflix's series:

House of Cards started filming on January 2012 and was released on February 2013.

Orange is the new Black began filming in the Fall of 2012 and was released in July of 2013.

So, it looks like we can expect 8-12 months from now for it to be released. I had always assumed they wanted this released prior to AoU, but I'm leaning more towards a June 2015 release, probably right after Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ends season 2.

Yea, MoviePilot and WhatCulture are the absolute dregs.

I agree with the general assessment that the MCU needs more women and minority heroes BADLY, but I wouldn't want them to start doing splinter/spin-off Avengers teams so soon.

That sounds like what the Defenders show is for.

G'day,

How soon is too soon? I think a Black Widow movie is certainly viable after Avengers 2 assuming it fits in with Ms Johansson family planning.

Also I wouldn't be surprised if the announce a Captain Marvel movie if GOTG is a success.

I think that it mostly needs more female and minority heroes/characters in starring roles. We've gotten really good ones (Black Widow, Peggy Carter, Pepper Potts, Falcon, War Machine, Nick Fury, etc), but they've all been in supporting roles thus far.

I'm still unsure as to whether Thanos will definitely be the big bad in Avengers 3...

With so many new characters being introduced over the course of Phase 3, I think the third Avengers film should give us an opportunity to focus on the new team of (most likely)...

Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Vision, Ant-Man, Dr Strange & (possibly?) Wasp

...Whereas I think a face-off with Thanos should, and will, feature multiple teams so as well as the above and the "Guardians Of The Galaxy" (Starlord, Gamorra, Drax, Rocket & Groot) we may also see a "Secret Avengers" team of Captain America (either Steve Rogers or Bucky Barnes depending on how Cap 3 pans out), Falcon, Black Widow, Sharon Carter, Maria Hill and Nick Fury.

War Machine/Iron Patriot wouldn't be out of place in that line-up either, but I've a feeling that someone like Strucker or Zemo is going to get their hands on that Iron Patriot armour as we aren't going to be getting Norman Osbourne any time soon but he was a big catalyst in many storylines of the past decade that seem to have, along with the "Ultimates", influenced the MCU just as much as the "classic" stories of the 20th century.

I'm not sure about where they'll take Hawkeye, but I'd like to see Mockingbird brought into the mix and it would also be cool to see him in his Goliath and Ronin guises at some point.

Speaking of Ronin .... I kind of get the impression they've had a look at the New Avengers & Defenders rosters and come to this conclusion...

Two of the original four Defenders (Silver Surfer and Some say Namor)aren't available, and another (Hulk) is already around in the Avengers (though rumour has it that may change at the end of Avengers 2)...which just leaves Doctor Strange, who was also on the New Avengers roster so how about a "New Avengers" line-up?...
...Well looking at the New Avengers team, you've got a couple who can't be used (Spidey and Wolverine are with Sony and Fox respectively), a couple who're already in the Avengers AND doing their own thing (Captain America & Iron Man) , and a handful whose power level is more suited to the small screen (Luke Cage, Iron Fist etc)

....... soooooooo whaddya do?...

...Feed Doctor Strange into the main Avengers team along with the late 60s/early 70s recruits also being brought in because his power level fits more with the big screen than the small and there isn't currently the opportunity to roll out the classic Defenders line-up...
(in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if we get an appearance from the Scarlet Witch in Strange's solo movie giving him an Avengers connection prior to Avengers 3)

... that leaves the "Defenders" name on the table whilst at the same time you've got a handful of characters associated with the New Avengers stories such as Power Man & Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, and to some degree Daredevil looking for a flag to fly under in the miniseries that sets the team apart from the big screen "Avengers".

So the "Secret Avengers" get Cap 2 & 3
The "Defenders" get their Netflix miniseries
"Guardians Of The Galaxy" get a movie or two, (possibly bringing Hulk back to Earth after a take on the "Planet Hulk" storyline)

...so our "New" Avengers team would be overshadowed by other more established ensembles were Avengers 3 to be the Thanos story ... they need a movie of their own first, and that is what Avengers 3 should be :)

This is why I believe that Phase 4 will build up to a "Marvel's Infinity War" , or similarly titled movie, which will essentially be both "Avengers 4" AND "Guardians Of The Galaxy 3" and will give us a big showdown with Thanos featuring the whole of the MCU, and in which we will also see the reunion of the "big three" with Stark getting back in the armour, Steve Rogers returning from "the dead", if as I suspect they are going to follow the Brubaker run up to the "Death Of Captain America" in Cap 3, and Thor returning to Earth after serving time on the throne of Asgard following the end of his trilogy which I think might feature elements of the "Loki" graphic novel amongst other things.

...and just for the cherry on the cake I'd give "Director Coulson" of SHIELD an appearance as well, and I've no doubt he'll be seen on the big screen again at some point, albeit in a cameo :)

Same here. I want to see Ms. Marvel, Spider-Woman, She Hulk and at the same time, I don't want the series to move forward doing splinter/spin-off Avenger films.

Does anyone have any guesses/hopes for what announcements will be at this years SDCC?

Does anyone have any guesses/hopes for what announcements will be at this years SDCC?

- The cast of Agent Carter outside of Hayley Atwell
- Cast additions to Agents of SHIELD (IE upgrading BJ Britt to regular)
- Announcement of Dr. Strange actor
- Cap 3, Thor 3 and unnamed new property and Avengers 3.

The unknown project needs to be BP or Carol Danvers. I'll take either.

I know it might be tempting to pick GOTG2, but if a GOTG2 happens before Avengers 3 that means only one thing: Marvel has been able to work out what Zoe Saldana's schedule is going to be.

Guesses:
-Cap 3 and Thor 3 titles announced + Thor 3 release date
-Lots of A:AoU stuff
-Dr. Strange official announcement and announcement of the main actor
-More details on Agent Carter and AoS season 2
-More details on Daredevil and the other Netflix shows
-Ant-Man stuff because they want to reassure people about it

Hopes:
-Announcement of a Captain Marvel movie
or
-Announcement of a Black Panther movie

So any possibility we see Angela Odinsdottir either in a future Thor movie or GOTG movie? She just had a pretty large announcement this morning.

The MCU needs Silver Surfer and Galactus. I feel Disney and Fox need to be able to come to some sort of agreement on those characters.

Sony's Amazing Spider-Man franchise is trash IMO. Now would be the perfect time for Disney/Marvel to buy Spider-Man off Sony for some outrageous amount of cash. If they got the rights to Spidey they could do an epic, revolutionary Netflix series that could finally be the Spidey we've always wanted. We could get all the villains, and it wouldn't seem rushed or contrived because they could be introduced organically in a tv show. Tv IS the best format for Spider-Man if they're trying to introduce lots of villains. Spidey has a huge supporting cast too. Spidey at his best is the 90s animated series or Spectacular Spider-Man, that format just works so well with the character. Something along those lines in live action form, connected to the MCU on Netflix would be a dream come true

I have to admit, I did not see that announcement coming. I'm curious as to who it turns out to be?

I didn't expect it either though I correctly predicted it would be a Thor-related announcement at least XD I first found out about it on another board and went :wow:

But there have been replacement Thors in the comics before and a female one sounds interesting, she'll probably only be Thor until AoU or Thor 3 comes out though:halo: I'm also curious who it'll be...

Valkyrie deserves it, but Angela makes the most sense story-wise.

Also, it may be that she gets more than just the power of Thor, y'know? So we've got a new Thor, a new Cap. Iron Man, you're next...

The MCU is currently $1,339,606,810 away from being the highest grossing film franchise of all time. I'm thinking that with GoTG and the Avengers 2 being released, by this time next year it will surpass Harry Potter as the biggest.
