Metal Monstrosities - The Official Sentinels/Project Wideawake thread

I am just thinking if Sentinels really existed would anyone spend the time to pain their eyes to make them pretty. It is more likely they would be simple in design a la head shown.

It's just gonna be for the Danger Room, I think that much is obvious. Giant Robots are too unrealistic for the "real world" plus we've already been told they aint a main part of the movie...

Not sure if this was previously mentioned, but the first thing that popped into my mind with the setting, and the sentinel head, was the super sentinel 'Nimrod'.. It seemed close in design to this (pictured below).

beside that the showdy giat figure had white eyes, but the head rolling on the floor had red.................. has anyone brough up "where was logna, the head was spining on the ground, and when it stopped, he walked out from behind it, where was he when it was spinning???

Part of my problem with the Sentinel is since the movie is supposed to have a 'realistic' feel to it I think the design should reflect that. For example, the eyes, what are they there for? Is it a functioning part of the robot? Do they serve a purpose? Are they like headlights that are supposed to illuminate what's in front of the robot? Are they lenses that the machine uses to view it's environment and analyze data? If so then the design doesn't reflect any of those tasks. The material seems too dull to form part of a searchlight mechanism and they certainly don't look like any sort of lenses to be used for optical viewing... So what, they're plastics put in place so that the robot has "eyes"? That's stupid.
And before any of you start complaining about my nitpicking, save it, I don't care for your opinion on my level of expectations. If I were in charge of prop design that's the sort of mentality with which I'd approach the project. I wouldn't simply add things for aesthetic value, things should follow a certain logic and should reach a certain level of realism and quality. That's the standard I'll hold this movie to and I hope come opening day it delivers.

I think in the eyes and mouth, yes.

*GambitXremy - I'm going to use your post to illustrate a point. It's not directed at you alone but everybody that has been subscribing to the "stop whining and complaining" mentallity that has always prevailed here but is palpably present right now *

I'm not saying the movie will suck because this clip was underwhelming for me BUT... I think this sort of mentality is wrong: "They made it for us so we should enjoy it"? What does that mean? That I have to like it no matter what? That we should be thankfull they're doing us a favor and just accept it, even if it doesn't meet expectations?
Would you as a consumer accept a sub-standard meal you are paying for at a restaurant simply because it's what you were served? Would you accept anything you are given even if it's not what you asked for or how you wanted it? Would you simply just take it and pay because you know, you should be thankfull they served you at all? I hope your answer is NO.
Now why should we deal with FOX any differently than with any other business that is providing us a service? We have a right as consumers to demand what we want how we want it. We're asking for quality, and they better listen.
Granted, not everybody wants the same thing, just like different people like their meat cooked differently. But the point is that everybody has a right to express their concerns and complain when their expectations are not met.
It's pointless to complain about people complaining because you don't agree with their opinion. The fact is they have a right to say what they feel and those of you that don't agree should at least aknowledge that it is their right and leave them be. Maybe if this community would respect the fact that not everybody has to agree with each other we would have a lot less of the senseless bickering we've been seeing.

Endeavor, that kind of post was way overdue. Considering the extremely high expectations for this film (which is safe to say, based on the fans extremely high regards for the comics) I would expect most fans to be displeased and voice their opinion. What are you gonna do? Every fan-based website has its "rose-colored glasses brigade".

As for the scene.....meh, its a step in the right direction I suppose.....it just comes off as being very cheap (please tell me their not using the liquid metal effect for Colossus). I keep waiting for that "HOLY *****" moment in these films and haven't seen it yet. The nightcrawler scene came damn close though. Maybe the sentinels will appear in the end and the scenes will be more polished.

Except that this thing looks more like it came from the cosby kids junkyard... trash can lids, headlights eyes, and spare metal parts.

I would hope that even a 'training' robot, in any environment, would have a more effective design.

 Yup, why bother making a training machine that just has trash can lids for ears? At least make them detach and fly at the mutant to take their head off or something.

I'll give you that, but there's really no reason NOT to have had the sentinel look as it does in the comics, the coulda just given it less garish colors.

As for the "fastball special", I didn't see one. It's supposed to be a javelin like launch, hence "fastball".

He shoulda stepped onto Peters hands and LAUNCHED. But unfortunately, gravity is against us, and I agree, it would have been near impossible to pull off without some kind of motion behind it.
sry but that would look foolish.. they did what they had to do.. for the fact HUGH IS NOT SHORT LIKE WOLVIE! lol

Imagine this: the following scene has no score. All sound effects for intensity.

The big fight scene comes and the X-men try their best to fight off the brotherhood alongside the military. The goverment, blind to the efforts of the X-men, lump the X-men in with the rest of the rioting mutants. The president, feeling the pressure from his staff of military advisors and from fear of public backlash, invokes "the sentinel protocol".

As the battle rages on, multiple impact tremors can slowly be heard and felt by the combatants (and audience). An order goes out for the military to pull back or evacuate the combat area. The impact tremors get louder. Both the X-men and the brotherhood stand in both disarray and disbelief at the retreating army. suddenly someone screams, and everyone turns in the direction of the scream. Storm says, "oh my god". A Sentinel slowly lurches out from behind a building. More screams of startlement as another sentinel appears from behind the other.

......one can only dream.............

sentinels should look practical like they were in Xmen: Evolution.

but i would squee just a little bit if one of them said "SURRENDER MUTANT"

I've lurked on this board for a while, and after having watched "the clip," from A$$-chin's late-nite show, I felt I had to post. Now, I have to say, since I feel I'll probably get torn a new one for this post, that I'm an avid X-Men fan. I love a ton of comics, but X-Men have always been "my superhero comic," and I've geeked-out, gleefully, over every incarnation, be it the several cartoon series,' the games, or the films. My favorite thing about the X-Men are the Sentinels--or, more clearly, the massive smack-down that the X-Men put on the Sentinels, in every incarnation--followed by Apocalypse, and then Magneto and his Acolytes. There's just something about seeing this group of mutants coordinating their attacks against the ultimate symbol of human intolerance, and hatred, for mutant-kind, that gives me goose bumps. Ever since I learned that the first film was being made, I've been patiently waiting for the mutant-hunting robots to make their appearance. I didn't expect them in the first film, I was hoping for them in X2, though I quickly got over it since the film was a superb one, and now that I've seen this clip, I'm very disappointed. The Sentinels, as much as some fans will state to the contrary, are a HUGE part of the X-Men universe/mythology, and deserve a far better treatment than they receive in this clip, and we, as fans, as the main source of profit for these films, deserve a far better representation than what I watched. I know that they might (might) appear in other parts of the film, but this is the only official release, so far, that has dealt with the Sentinels, so it's all I, and we, have to go on. Now, I'm not going to say that this film will suck, since I'm holding out final judgment until the movie opens, but I've been following, as I'm certain many of us have, the production of X3 through sites like aintitcool and darkhorizons, and I've been very worried about Ratner's abilities, Rothman's forcing the film to be done for this summer, and the numerous rumors surrounding plot points. This clip, with this pi$$-poor "Sentinel," only bolsters the fears I have that this will be a sub-par X-Men film. I'm not only disappointed by the "Sentinel" itself, which is more than enough for me to continue to have reservations, but also by the chunk of clunky script I heard the actors blurt out, the horrific orchestrations playing in the background, and the terrible s/fx transformation of Colossus. I've read some posts saying that people heard this was an unfinished part of the film...I certainly hope so, since I found it completely awful. I'm not condemning this film before it opens, but looking at that clip, a clip that the makers of this film freely put on national TV (albeit only on Leno), I can't honestly say I was impressed, as some have, and I must say that I was really let down. I'm not trying to change anyone's minds, and I'm not whining, but as a fan, I'm sorry to see that this might not be the spectacle we all hope it will be, and it might be a different kind of spectacle altogether. ---MyPantsRTight!!

Why would you call a sentinel 'nimrod'? :)

The original meaning for the name is 'hunter' or something like that (I think it was someone in the bible)

as far as the design and color of the sentinel head, i did a manip a little while ago, before i even knew sentinels would be in the movie, and i took the X2 designs and colored it different shades of purple, like the comics. and people hated the color. it just goes to show, things from comics don't always work in movies. i think this head is fine. its exactly what i'd expect from an xmen movie. it looks like a giant robot head... although, i hope i get to see a little more of the sentinel, but as far as this clip goes, i think it did what its supposed to do... get the fans excited that there will be sentinels. of course, everyone still complains about it
