More thoughts from me:
- I'm with
Darthphere about the GOD LOVES, MAN KILLS HC; I may not buy it as I already own the story, but it definately is one that always deserves a newer print with more goodies. The X-Men have had a lot of stories, a large chunk of them written by Chris Claremont. Some touched on all the key themes of the franchise, some were just character stories, and some went into wild distractions, like space or magic. XM:GLMK is of the former variety, nailing what the X-Men are all about with good dialogue, story, and effective action pacing. Honestly, it is one of my favorite X-Men stories and argueably one of the best. Yeah, Marvel could have timed it better with X2, but the more editions of this, the merrier.
- The more of Hudlin I glance at, the more I believe he really shouldn't be in comics and should just join the actual Black Panthers. If a white person consistantly wrote such blatent stereotypes in his work, he'd be called a racist. Or Garth Ennis.
- Bendis on ULTIMATE ORIGINS, eh? I sort of get annoyed at the 21st century method of storytelling, that everything in life has to be connected in some conspiracy. That said, Bendis is one of the co-founders of the Ultimate line (along with Millar), so this is his story to tell, so I may pick it up.
- If there is any sign that the Ultimate Universe has largely accomplished what it set out to do and now is filling pages because all the comics sell too well to cancel, it is ULTIMATE SAGA. Originally, this franchise was made to attract either old or new fans put off by buckets of continuity. Now, most of these franchises are 7+ years old and have a bucket of continuity in themselves. It's not 616, but still, over half a decade's worth of stuff. Now, I am not saying that we should cancel Ultimate, or that it is a waste, or that they could restart it. Just saying, my, amazing how things change with time.
- Glad that Paquette is sticking on ULTIMATE X-MEN, because Kirkman's run has been riddled with terrible art since Raney left (after being wasted on the Magician issues), and Paquette has been the only decent artist on that book since. Still, Kirkman really has to pick things up and seems to have a direction, but is also stuck in a trap of "what obscure character can I ultimitize next?" and his direction is a bit muddled.
- Carey & Brooks' ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR, though, looks better. I originally pined for Brooks to replace Bagley on USM, but y'know what? Glad that didn't happen because I actually still read UFF.
- ASM has not only been stuck in perpetual crossover for over two years now, it has also ended every issue with a cliffhanger and that is why I have stayed as long as I have after CW. I am not sure I may stick around for OMD, although I will return for Slott. But we'll see what happens. What are the Vegas odds on the Parker Marriage ending? The amazing thing is, DC can do nothing but rehash and repeat their own Silver Age, but even THEY know breaking up the Kent marriage would be lackluster.
- The fact that a comic being solicted a mere 3 months in the future doesn't even have an artist yet when most artists need a period of a month or more to get in an issue on time, much less an extra sized annual, is a bad sign for AVENGERS: INITIATIVE ANNUAL. But I'll still get it. Guess Armory & MVP are coming back in some form if Slott's bothering to do origins for them.
- ANNIHILATION CONQUEST naturally looks good.
- I cease to see any point in reviving the original CAPTAIN MARVEL, and in a way he reeks of DC's obsession with Hal Jordon, a character that appeals to nothing the company has done for the past decade or so and just smells of the yesteryear that no one under 40 is fond of. Plan for the future, not the past, guys.
- FANTASTIC FOUR #552 promises more "dark revelations for Reed from CW" and quite frankly I am getting tired of that crap. It reminds me of the stuff with Xavier; Millar made Xavier a shady, semi-corrupt and manipulative cult leader in ULTIMATE X-MEN and then all of a sudden writers in 616 were so quick to add more tragic secrets and sins to mainstream Xavier, you'd think it'd cause their penises to enlarge (Brubaker and Whedon included). Now we see that Millar may have sparked something simular in Richards, and I am getting tired of it. How about for once portraying an actual VILLAIN as a semi sympathetic bastard who does mean things? Lord, the Wizard has been without a good motive for generations now.
- GHOST RIDER #17 seems wonky and I really hope the conclusion to the Satan arc is worth it, considering what a stupid non-retcon retcon it was.
- I may or may not get HOWARD THE DUCK. I've never been fond of the character although I haven't ever read much of him, either. If #1 comes on a slow week in October I could see myself getting it.
- Show of hands; does anyone give two ****'s about HOM: AVENGERS? Nope? No one? Now, how many of you would wish Marvel would just allow HOM to fade into history? Wow, wow, not all at once. Yeah. I mean, Gage is a good writer, but why the **** is he wasted on crap like this!? HOM was THREE GOD DAMNED YEARS AGO! No one cares! No one cares but Bendis because his ego is larger than the planet Jupiter, or whatever editors whose job it is to keep Bendis' rear moist with fresh spittle from all the kisses. This is a book that doesn't matter except to obsessed die-hards who Marvel never has any shame with fleecing, and seems to just be an attempt to get another Avengers book on the racks; we now have about five a month. Didn't you greedy bastards learn the overexposure lessons with Spider-Man and the X-Men!? At the end of the day I mourn yet another waste of Gage's talents at Marvel. If the guy signs DC exclusive before Marvel has the brains to put him on a decent book with importance (much like McKeever), I don't blame him.
- IMMORTAL IRON FIST, as always, looks awesome.
- MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS looks nice, but OMEGA FLIGHT scored Top 50 sales for every issue of their mini, yet Marvel may risk letting that excitement fade and merely throws those fans who answered their dare for Oeming & Kolins' book with a minor MCP story? There are moments where Marvel nails it right on the head, and other moments where Marvel so misses the mark that they resemble brain-dead carp, and the failure to make OF an ongoing after the strong sales of the mini and the talent employed with making it is starting to look like the latter. Don't F this one up, Marvel. You dared the fans to support OMEGA FLIGHT to make it an ongoing and they did. Keep your end of the bargain to your fans for once in Joe Q's miserable tenure as EIC.
- Marvel is spitting out no end of POWER PACK kiddie books yet does nothing to get POWER PACK as a TV cartoon, when they literally fit every network condition (child heroes, bright colors, and animals). Instead they waste a DTV on AVENGERS REBORN (re: AVENGERS BABIES). Mind-boggling.
- Hopefully the "ramifications" of WWH won't be overmilked, because many of the tie-in's have been rather obligatory. Tom Foster's involvement in WWH still prevents him from being Night-Thrasher in NW's, in my eyes.
- MARVEL ATLAS looks fun for us data geeks.
- ANOTHER Marvel Zombies mini? Ugh, give them an ongoing or cut it out, it is getting annoying.
- MOON KNIGHT ANNUAL #1 without Husten? It screams filler, but most annuals are, so it is fine.
- Was anyone there screaming for a retelling of OMEGA THE UNKNOWN? No. Imagine all of the better characters who could have gotten a mini.
- NOVA naturally always looks cool, hopefully the sales hold up; it has been slipping. I'd hate for it to not be able to outlive BLADE.
- NEW AVENGERS ILLUMINATI promising shocking betrayals and in-fighting between heroes, written by Bendis. Good golly, how original. He never has written that a billion god damned times before.

Oh, well, least it fits his strength, which is writing superheroes as failures of life. With Reed co-writing this still manages to be the best thing Bendis is writing right now, IMO.
- NEW WARRIORS #6 as always looks good and Walker on PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL is icing on the cake.
- I might just stay on THOR a little bit, and THE ORDER and MODOK'S 11 continue to look appealing, as is my guilty pleasure, X-MEN FIRST CLASS.
- Onto MAX territory; more TERROR, INC is good. I likely will give FOOLKILLER a try. And I like how the cover of THE ZOMBIE: SIMON GARTH #1 pays homage to a classic painted 70's cover with that same character pose. Good to see other classics besides superheroes get homaged. I may give it a try, although MAX books are expensive, so who knows.
