OMG. Is honestly the only thing I can say right now. It's a perfect mix of First Class and X2. It really blends well. Bryan took two completely different times and styles and blended them well together. Like most people I do wish the future scenes had more time to them but even the time that was given to them was fantastic. The movie is paced very well. I don't think there was problems with the editing and transition.

James McAvoy deserves more credit than he gets. Michael and Jen are great actors but this movie wouldn't be what it is if his performance wasn't so captivating. Every moment he was on screen you just follow him. I can't say yet whether it is better than X2. It is miles ahead of First Class. But I need a few more viewings to see how it holds with me. But I think it is on the same level as X2. I rated it a 10. But that's just because i've come out of it. Also as a huge die hard Rogue fan who was nearly in tears over her cut from the film, trust me it's not noticeable. There is just too much happening to even worry about her. Hard as that is it does work. And thinking about her sequence does kind of make me think how they could have fit it in. And if it would have distracted away from the plot. It kind of makes sense.

Actually I'm far more of an X-Men fan than a Captain America fan, I've never been the biggest fan of Cap.

That's why it's a true testament to how good CA:TWS truely is, since it wowed ME a person who's pretty so-so with Cap.

Agreed. I was never a Cap fan, and I thought the first film was decent. I never would have thought I would rank a Cap film as one of my favorite Superhero films, but TWS did it. It's right up there with Avengers and TDK for me.

But hey, if DOFP beats it, that's only good news. I'm a comic fanboy, not a marvel or DC fanboy, or Disney/Fox/Sony ect. I just want to see good comic films in general, so I'm super stoked that DOFP seems to be getting rave reviews.

so I just got back, review as follows.

X-men has had some stumbles ever since Bryan Singer left the series, along the way we've gotten missteps in his absence with the likes of X-men 3 and Origins. First Class and to a lesser extent The Wolverine starting taking things back in the right direction but with Singer returning with Days of Future Past the series has finally once again found its feet. Singer has managed to combine the best elements of First Class and the original series together and resurrect the series in a film that hits the heights of its glory days.

Whilst past installments have been too Wolverine focused DOFP is a genuine ensemble story with Wolverine, Xavier, Magneto, Raven and Trask all providing the backbone of the story. In a desolate future Wolverine's mind is sent back in time to his younger self in 1973 with the task to somehow try and get young drug riddled Xavier and imprisoned Magneto to work together to prevent Mystique from becoming the trigger for a future war. At the same time the film cuts back and forth across time where the future characters are doing what they can to ensure Wolverine's mind remains in the past. Once you overcome the somewhat awkward initial 5-10 mins of the film where the set up for how things work is explained the film's plot moves fluidly for the remainder of the movie, intertwining the various plot elements with easy and never once feeling overstuff or bogged down. The editing and pacing in the movie is excellent and probably the best in a superhero film in quite some time, especially when you consider the somewhat convoluted story happening.

Whilst the film is an ensemble piece the heart of the movie is probably with young Xavier, in the 10 years since First Class he is a shell of a man who has given up on his abilities and still longs for Raven to come back to him. With Wolverine's help he begins to wake up in an effort to change history but years of drug inducement has made it emotionally difficult for him to use his powers. It eventually, and in what is probably the best scene in the movie, leads to him to connecting with his future self who gives him the will to move forward in order to reconnect with who he is, and in some way plant the seed for whom he'll eventually become.

The cast in the movie is of course amazing. There really is no need to go into the actors portrayals of the character as most have become synonymous with their characters, even the First Class cast has comfortably slipped into their respective roles. Jackman is awesome as Wolverine. Jennifer Lawrence reallys bring so much heart and depth to Mystique. Peter Dinklage is fantastic and a stroke of casting genius. What's fascinating are the two Magnetos and Xaviers, I can't tell you who how awesome it is to see both sets of actors in one film, and whilst the older of the two don't have as much screen time as the younger pair what's amazing is seeing the chemistry between them. The older pair are wounded warriors regretting the decisions they've made, the younger two trying to put aside their differences for a common goal, it's great to watch. As for the supporting cast, the future cast are made up of mostly glorified cameos with Kitty Pride having the main role to play, whilst in the past Beast seems to kinda just tag along for the ride. The Quicksilver sequence is actually one of the coolest and genuinely unique action sequences in a superhero film in quite some time.

The film itself looks beautiful, it's style and cinematography is up there with the earlier Singer films. The special effects are top notch as are the action sequences, especially towards the end of the movie where battles are taking place between the two timelines is intense.

Overall what's been delivered in this film is a kick in that the arse the series needed. It fixes many of the anomalies the series has accumulated over the years (although not all feel satisfactory) and gives the series a freshness moving forward. I'm not quite sure where things can go from here on in, in many ways it feels like the First Class journey is completed yet there's enough to suggest more could be done in the past still. It would be ashame to no longer see McAvoy, Fassbender and Lawrence anymore as all three have contributed immensely to their characters and the series. Whatever the future holds we should all be looking forward to it because the X-Men are no longer yesterdays heroes, they are back where they belong.

I'll start by saying I wasn't a massive fan of the original trilogy. I loved the story lines of mutant oppression but really didn't connect to any of the characters and I really disliked that the trilogy focused primarily on one character, Wolverine and characters like Cyclopes were pretty much cameos in the movies.
Then I saw X:FC and it blew me the **** away, I loved, loved LOVED this movie, it is in my top 5 all time favorite comic book movies. I loved the dynamic of Mystique, Charles and Eric. I loved the secondary mutants like Beast, Banshee and Havok. Loved the action (which seem look real and gritty than anything in the OT) and above all I loved the main villain, Bacon as Shaw was incredible.

Now let me start off by saying, no question, DoFP is a GOOD movie. There are good character scenes, great set pieces (although I was taken out of movie a couple of times because they were so CG heavy) but my favorite characters were almost shunted to one side for characters I wasn't fussed about in the original trilogy.
The villain is no where near as compelling as Shaw was in X:FC and I didn't feel the weight and stakes of climax of X:FC where I felt myself checking out due to the horrible (imho) CG.

I don't think this movie is a patch on X:FC (my favorite Xmen movie by miles) and doesn't hit the heights of Eric pushing the coin as a child, Charles pushing Eric to turn the satellite dish, the coin through the head at the end, Raven's change to the other side.

In isolation I'd give this movie a solid 8-8.5/10 but if X:FC were a 10/10 and I were comparing the two movies I would give DoFP 7/10

Cap 2? I Never was "rave" about it lol. The best I said of it was it's the best of the MCU movies, but ain't saying much. And so-so isn't bad or anything! After the initial WOW factor wears off (about 1-2 days after seeing it) I just realize how boring and cookie cutter it is. *shrug* I wanted to like it more and get back into the MCU, but the feeling wore off fast... Maybe Guardians lol.

I have no interest in watching cap 2 again. (Like IM3 and Thor 2) After seeing Amazing Spider-man 2 and DOFP, they absolutely destroyed it for me. Spider-man and X-men just mean so much more to me. The wow factor has not even budged for ASM2 or DOFP.

But good for cap tho, I'm happy for him and the MCU, and I will continue to support their films in theaters. Blu ray maybe not so much lol.

Not enough emotion (Evans/Cap is bland, the scene with Peggy could have been much more emotional and not just thrown in there), and everything (and I mean everything: every vehicle ever on screen, and most buildings) blew up. For that reason I gave it a 7/10, I don't think I can push that to an 8, it just wasn't dazzling enough.

DoFP is not perfect and I do want to see it again to rank it against the other X-Men movies. But after first viewing I give it 8/10.

Ok so having slept on it, here's my review of DOFP (I'll spoiler it just in case, not sure what our rules are on this)

It's amazing. Absolutely amazing. Right from the first moment to the last, it's an on the edge of your seat thriller that keeps you guessing while paying homage to the entire X-Men franchise. The fact that it opens with the classic music, the classic CGI opening and a Patrick Stewart voice-over sold it instantly - this is Bryan Singer back at the helm, and this is Bryan Singer calling the shots again. And it's clear how much the franchise has missed his input.

The plot worked brilliantly, and while a few bits seemed rushed (first 15 mins go by and we're already at the past X-Mansion) the whole thing rattled along at a great pace. The film is REALLY densely packed with plotting, and while the main story comes to the fore, there is an absolute ton of backstory to cover that will get better and better on repeat viewings.

All the characters were utilised well, but I felt the future cast got shortchanged a little. We don't really see them working as a big unit for very long, but this is a FC sequel, and it was just great to see them all again. Wolverine worked as a great window into the past, McAvoy dazzled as Xavier, JLaw actually gave a damn this time, Hoult was up and down but largely a good Beast, and Quicksilver stole the show.

The only character I took issue with was Fass Magneto. What was his game exactly? He preached peace and helped for the first half hour, then he ran off, stole a stadium and tried to kill everyone. And for what? His motivations seemed misplaced.

Comedy was another highlight. Jackman was on fine form, McAvoy played off him really well, and Quicksilver was hilarious. Best thing about the film for me was how it tied the franchise together for the first time. Films like Origins and The Wolverine give glimpses of connection, but never feel wholly bolted on, whereas DOFP linked the franchise in every way possible. The Sentinels were explained, Wolverine's past was explored, his reaction to seeing Stryker was incredible, and the seeds were planted for Weapon X. It all felt like a cohesive universe.

No explanation on how/why he has adamantium in the future, Xavier being alive etc, but whatever, that's fine.

The ending was the stunner though. Genuinely got choked up. Xavier/Mystique and the X-Men falling in the most gruesome ways possible (Colussus... :| ) set the stakes high, and Logan waking in the mansion and seeing everyone again? Outstanding. Stewart's Xavier realising that this is old Wolverine back from his adventure was a lovely moment, and a fantastic way of setting the stage for the future. It's very easy to have Stewart and Jackman frame the next few films, as he learns the history that has been rewritten.

Oh this is a goody.

I'd say the best X-Men film, and up there amongst the top of all superhero films.

Fassbender, McCavoy, Stewart, McKellan, Jackman, Lawrence, Dinklage, all add to an excellent film.

And Quicksilver is a scene stealer. After Aaron Taylor Johnson's garbage performance in Godzilla last week, and now this being the bar set, I feel bad for poor Whedon with A:AoU.

And X-Men 3 is no longer continuity! Ratner damage averted.

The movie was superb, as expected. My only complains were the lack of dialogue & exposure on most of the Future Mutants.
