I just found out that Thorin is older than Balin by 17 years! I guess Jackson felt that if Balin was going to be the company's wisest and the conscience of the group then he had to have the white beard and look the age of wisdom. That's the only way to explain him looking way older than Thorin.

Or Balin's hardcore lifestyle is finally caught up to him. He's the Keith Richards of the company.

Clearly Jackson's Thorin is younger than Jackson's Balin.

He is. They talk about make him younger in the EE Appendices.

If you're going by the book, they changed a lot about the dwarves. Some of them in the books have blue beards, for example.

Smaug in Berlin.

Whoa. I wonder what they do with stuff like that after the movie leaves theaters.

I assumed that was meant figuratively, as in Blue Beard the pirate.

There's terrific fan-fic potential for a blue-bearded dwarf who behaves like Bluebeard from the oft-repeated tale. :o Maybe Jackson will adapt it for the EE of the third film. It would be his answer for why there are no dwarf women.

Looks like that Smaug prop from Berlin has the outdated, wider snout.

The Smaug art work from the airplane looks to have a narrower snout. Of course, I am assuming he would even look like the aforementioned.

The way he looks on the airplane could be due to the 2D art and the perspective being warped some by the cylinder shape of the plane.

I was on the Hobbit train again today. :woot:

I'm a little disappointed that there aren't any Thursday evening screenings for this.

What do you guys think in terms of boxoffice numbers.

Even with the first movie struggling it still hit 1 billion ww.

Im thinking 350 million domestic and 1.2 billion WW

Yeah, seriously. I was quite angry when I looked and found nothing. I don't do midnight anymore.

i think it could struggle domestically. Even if it is more well received, the competition this year is brutal.

Maybe American Hustle and the wolf of wall street but i dont think 47 ronin or anchorman will pose a threat.
I will admit that i had thought the first hobbit movie woul'dve easily crushed the boxoffice based on the LOTR movies. I had my prediction at 400 plus domestic and 1-.2-1.5 billion ww

Anchorman 2 less than a week after. Followed by Mitty and 47 Ronin and American Hustle. Not a whole lot of room to get a good run. But its LOTR or near enough. It will do fine. And if it doesn't, well, WB is gonna be fine cause they made their money back for the entire trilogy on AUJ's box office alone.

If I was still in college or if the movie was only two hours or less, it wouldn't be a problem. But seeing "The Dark Knight Rises" and the first "Hobbit" film last year at midnight and having to get up at 7 am for work the next day didn't do me any favors at all. I felt like death.

It is about the amount of films that are appealing. You have everything from Anchorman, to Mr Banks, to Mitty ,to The Wolf of Wall Street and 47 Ronin.

Heck look at "Inside Llewyn Davis". It just did a limited run this weekend at $100,000 per screen. It could be a bit of hit when it expands.

Plus you will have the hold overs like Catching Fire and Frozen which people will still be watching this holiday season.

When I say struggle, I don't see it doing much more then AUJ domestic numbers. Basically it will struggle in terms of being a huge domestic box office success, but not a real struggle. I can't see it chasing down anything that made over $300mil domestically.

Exactly how I feel.
