I didn't see that as the case. I don't think he was shown as a coward but more as someone who knew that evil was coming and he needed to protect his Kingdom and damn the consequences.
Tauriel is standing right there to show us he is coward. Every word she says proves this. As does his scene with Legolas.

And really, offering help for some jewels? Come on.

As a Huge fan of Tolkeins work I would say this film is just awesome but as was the problem with the first one it lack a certain something that made the other triology so damn good. I feel this story is a bit stretched and it would be nice if they had the rights to the Silmarillion so the story could be more fleshed out by actual Tolkien work rather than Philipia Boynes and Jackson doing essentially high budget fanfiction but Warner Bros demanded 3 films so they had to do 3 films and we are the ones that have to suffer some silly story beats but oh well. If you like action films and enjoy the middle earth that Jackson has created I would go see this.
That is just made up. :funny:

I very seldom leave movies early, but I walked out of this last night about half way through.

I decided to give The Desolation of Smaug a chance, since I loved the Lord of the Rings movies. Although An Unexpected Journey wasn't very good, I figured this would be better with all of the ground work laid out. But it wasn't. It is just so effin boring. Walking, talking, something almost happening but not quite happening, walking, talking, something almost happening but not quite happening, repeat. And the talking just seemed to be repeating the groundwork laid in the first movie!

Its probably my fault a bit. I was very tired last night and it probably wasn't the best time for me to go, but I just couldn't take it anymore, so I left.

Has it been confirmed that Wb demanded 3 instead of 2. I feel like Jackson has a bit more say in things like that.

It hasn't I just have a feeling when WB came to them with the intention of asking for 3 or that the original plan was 3 and Jackson wanted 2 but when he was filming he had it in the back of his mind that extra footage could be used for a 3rd movie because no director would just film and keep filming without knowing that he would have permission and have the chance for an extended project.

I guess maybe I took it differently is all.

Everything I have read seems like they maybe didn't demand it but that they at least asked for 3 in the first place. It just seems odd that mid filming they would be like "Oh well actually we need to make 3 instead of 2" I know it looks like I'm just reaching but this is WB they aren't exactly geniues over there.

Randall?

I'd say Wb is one of the best at letting their directors do what they want for better or worse. Guaranteed it was a joint decision by the two. Who knows who asked first but there is no way either side balked at the idea of doing 3 instead of 2.

Thats the truth. Bottom line really rules all.

You left before the one thing that made all that waiting worth it imo. :csad:

This movie is staring to sound nothing short of a disaster.

I really liked the first one despite all its issues and it'll probably be the same with this one but it does seem like the Tolkien fan base is not digging this film or the last whatsoever.

It's really weird that this movie is getting generally more favorable reviews. We're they paid?

If you are a fan of the material, the movie will divide you imo. If you are a fan of film, it will bother you how badly it is put together. If you are looking for some fun, there is more then a bit to be had. If you are a fan of Jackson, well, you'll defend anything.:woot:

This easily tops Thor 2 for me for worst climax/ending. The action is horrible, I was bored instantly and it has way too many cringe worthy moments. That ending, man what the hell was he thinking. It's like he just gave up and said well here ya go.

I am not surprised. As a I said yesterday, I am not sure it is a better film, but it has Smaug and well... he is amazing. The highest of highs, which covers up for other warts imo. Add that expectations for Jackson's films have been set a little lower, I can see why the reviews are better, even if the film isn't.

It is kinda like RotS. In no way is it anywhere near Star Wars or Empire, but considering how burnt many felt about the first two prequels, the opening, duels and Order 66 won many people over as "a return to form".

Have you already seen it Darth and if so have you posted up a review?

What rubbed me about Legolas hopping from Hobbit head to Hobbit head (sounds so wrong) the wrong way was not the juvenile stupidity of the act itself, but the fact that the barrell escape of the Dwarves were supposed to be a victory against the oppression of the woodland elves. Only to lose their dignity and diminish that victory by one of their own using their pates as platforms to jump.

Don't agree at all. In comparison to TDW ending, The Hobbit has some legit tension. There is a real attempt to play up the gravity of the situation. TDW doesn't at all. Plays it all as one big joke.

WB didn't demand 3 films, it was Jackson's idea to push for 3.

If we are honest, it isn't like WB were going to say no. They just added another billion+ in profit for not all that much more money. They were probably happy as all get out. I do think they wish it was coming out next summer as opposed to next December though.

I'm talking once the dwarves came in. The whole thing was a joke, I enjoyed it more than Thor but hated it more because I expected more whereas Thor is a Marvel movie so I don't expect much. The ending itself is just horrible

So apparently the Thrain scenes will be on the EE, confirmed by Boyens. In which case I ask who makes the decisions on what stays in and what comes out. It is kinda of laughable.

Also Marvolo, you know what that means. The starting scene in TABA is either going to be the attack or rescue. :D

That is an expectation thing, which is completely unfair imo. As film and as a finale I think DoS is a bit better then TDW.

EXCLUSIVE: PETER JACKSON'S "THERE AND BACK AGAIN" PLOT NOTES

Smaug attacks Laketown. But then he is summoned in the middle of the attack by Sauron to Dol Goldur! He leaves. Bard puts the dwarven turret bow on a wagon and sets out in pursuit with an awesome chase scene. Then Bard is injured. But his youngest daughter has stowed away on the wagon and she shoots the dragon down! Sauron is mad!!!

The Galadriel shows up and saves Gandalf! They hold hands again in a slightly creepy way then Saruman shows up and Gandalf rolls his eyes because everyone knows Saruman is a *****e! lololol. Then there is a badass fight between Sauron and the White Council and a balrog! Sauron is driven from Dol Goldur! But not before he possesses Azog's body and leads his army against Erebor!

Meanwhile Kili and Tauriel romance! Legolas is super jealous. This reveals why he hates dwarves so much in LOTR because they stole the girl he had a thing for. Totally makes sense! But then Bolg comes back oh noes and kills Tauriel. Kili is driven mad with grief!

Everyone wants gold. Bilbo takes Arkenstone to give to Bard, who is still healing. Thorin gets mad. STABS BILBO!!! DRAMA. Then Gandalf shows up and heals Bilbo! Disses Thorin. Battle of Five Armies begins. Everyone fighting each other until the orcs show up and then things really get ugly. Saur-Azog is like a superpowered orc with magic. Ringwraiths show up!!! Then Tauriel AS A ZOMBIE. All seems lost then Kili shows up riding on Beorn's back! He went to get Beorn's help. Beorn + Kili kill Bolg! But Kili dead. Then Gandalf kills Saur-Azog! Sauron's spirit flies away to Mordor laughing about how he will get the ring and Gandalf is like oh noes which leads directly into LOTR! (Brilliant!)

Everyone mourns for Kili / Tauriel which is like the most tragic thing ever! Legolas meets young Gimli in hilarious scene! Arwen shows up! Radagast dies from being poisoned by the Necromancer!

Bilbo goes home and adopts baby Frodo. Thinks about writing book. Tells Frodo maybe he should have an adventure someday too (audience will get a kick out of that foreshadowing, har har har!)

yeah I know, I agree its probably better but for me its worse because I expected more

Good foreshadowing- Legolas and the photo.

Bad Foreshaodwing- The Necromancer and every line they force into other characters' mouth to service that stupid plot.

yeah I know, I agree its probably better but for me its worse because I expected more
Why do you expect more considering Jackson's last four films before DoS? RotK, King Kong, The Lovely Bones and AUJ isn't exactly a great track record coming in.
