I realise I'm probably the last person to notice this, but:

1 ring for Sauron
9 rings for mortal Men
7 rings for the Dwarf lords
3 rings for the Elven kings

1, 9, 7, 3. What year did JRR Tolkien die? 1973.

Good, but if you follow the order of the verse it is actually 1379. I think England was at war with France.

Doesn't The One come last? So a thousand years in the future?

Anyway, why you gotta kill a brotha's hype?

just watched fellowship and man the action in the battle of amon-hen is ten times better than the action in DOS its far more real and gritty and more spectacular. Gimli hits an uruk with his axe and the guy does a 180 from the impact, legolas stabs(with his hand not the bow) an uruk in the face with an arrow and then as the uruk falls he uses the same arrow to shot the next uruk behind it, it just looks so cool. One of my problems with the battle of the barrels(as I call it now) is that they cut the action almost to fast and for some reason whenever legolas shots someone at close range they cut away before we see the arrow hit and or the arrow kinda disappears once it leaves the bow.

Sure it sounds like nitpicking but to me its important and that cgi when he starts surfing on the river bank is just terrible, yuck, that's why I almost like more the fight between legolas and bolg than the BOTB, even though that fight its a poor man's Aragorn vs Lurtz lol.

I feel the same way about the barrel sequence. I just dont get why its getting praise from others, cause imo its an absolute mess and a headache. Terrible cutting, shoddy cgi, wonky physics etc. My only guess as to how it made it into the final film in that shape is that Jackson and crew ran out of time to properly polish it. And if im being totally honest the whole film feels that way. Its the mpst enjoyable film in the franchise for me, but its rough and unfinished looking in many places.

Of course you're right, I was thinking that the stanza about the The One came at the start, but it doesn't. So, it's 3791.

A slightly off topic question; this for the Tolkien experts:

Elrond and Aragorn are distant relatives right? Aragorn is a descendant of a long line of Numenorian kings that started with Elros, Elrond's brother who chose to be a man. So when Aragorn betrothed Arwen the two houses joined once more.

You could say that they are distant relatives, yes, but with a strong, very strong emphasis on distant. The line of the Numenorian Kings is very long and spans basically over the whole Second Age. Actually, Elrond is probably just as apt to be considered Aragorn's ancestor as he is to be thought of as a relative.

Speaking of oldster Elves, shouldn't Cirdan be a member of the White Council at this point?

I found this pic and looks like this might be happening in TABA

Gandalf is holding Radagast's staff so this might be after he's rescued in Dol Guldur and going to Dale, perhaps?

I just watched the extended cut of AUJ last night, and I quite enjoy the added scenes. Especially things like Bilbo exploring Rivendel, and Kili flirting with the elven minstrels. The latter helps explain his fascination with the female elf in DOS (can't remember the character's name just now), which seemed to just come out of the blue in the second movie.

But has anyone else noticed that the actor who plays young Bilbo in these movies bears a striking physical resemblance to 80's comedic actor Martin Short?

Your thinking of Tauriel played by Evangeline Lilly.:hrt:

Frozen and Catching Fire has surpassed Hobbit 2 in the domestic BO into the 300s and 400s. I don't think Hobbit will even pass 300 at this point being in 6th place this week. That speaks volumes.

I can remember when $300m seemed like an awful lot.

It still is but there's always studios estimates and expectations. Hobbit 2 is making money but the turn out is lower then expected, as it were.

And at this point I don't know if Hobbit 2 can make it to 300 at this rate.

It won't hit $300M, that possibility was gone awhile ago. Finish around $264M give or take.

But bad, but possibly a bit human. I would opt for Sam Neil, who does otherworldly quite well.

I loved the movie, but I also enjoy watching HISHE videos, I like all the dragons they stuck in this one *lol*:

How Desolation of Smaug Should Have Ended

I wonder how much of Galadriel and Dol Guldur we will see. I am looking forward to her, Elrond, Gandalf and Saruman duking it out to force Sauron to flee back to Mordor and declare himself openly against all of Middle-earth.

Bombur's killing spree :lmao:

And that guy does a pretty good Smaug.

Also the intercutting of random GoPro camera footage that served no purpose. I can't imagine seeing such a thing in IMAX 3d.
