^ Thanks.

I don't personally see why this is being made an issue of, because, even if it is true, Connolly will still be credited because his likeness is being used.

apparently Billy Connelly has been replaced by CGI Dain...
Dain and Beorn were the things i was most looking forward to in this movie, and Beorn
getting roughly 15 seconds of screen time
and this really ruins it for me. hopefully the rumours are false. I was sure this would be the easiest one not to screw up
I give up.

God, please give me another Hobbit adaptation in my lifetime. Preferably from someone who actually gives a damn about the book and isn't obsessed with green screens.

Why would you not give Beorn screen time? I mean a giant bear throwing orcs around would surely be up PJ's alley? Its just baffling how PJ seems insistent on removing or altering awesome things to fit in pointless chase scenes and Legolas surfing scenes.

That person probably should have left out the cgi Dain if they wanted their review to be taken seriously. He's supposed to have some scenes on a war ram where he rides through the elvish ranks and that is no doubt done digitally but I doubt Jackson replaced Billy Connolly's on stage work with a mocaped character. The latest trailers and tv spots show Dain and he isn't cgi.

A lack of "battle focus" on Beorn is most likely a question of overall pacing, and the "CGI Dain" thing, as noted, doesn't seem like it should even be an issue at all.

It is too the bitter end for you on this one isn't it. :funny:

You have more faith in Jackson and co. than I do.

It makes some sense with orcs. They aren't human. It makes no sense with Billy. Sure in battle scenes it allows the character to do stuff Billy isn't capable of, but if Dain has any dialogue scenes then Jackson wouldn't use a cgi Dain in those scenes. So either Dain has no dialogue scenes in the Theatrical cut and is only scene in battle briefly with his helm on or the reviewer is lying or simply mistaken.

I'm on those boards (as a user. Though a lot less now due to the rampant fanboy/girlism that will attack anyone who criticises the film.) but I am 100% positive that guy is legit and has seen the movie.

And while I didn't think much of it the first time I saw those TV spots, looking back at them now I totally think he is CGI

It really doesn't make sense to CGI the orcs either, IMO... I'd rather have prosthetics than cartoon critters.

Or the film is so ugly you can't tell. :cwink:

Peter Jackson: "Hey, WB. So we've got to cast Dain Ironfoot, and I'm thinking Bill Connolly."
WB exec: "Oh I don't know, Pete. It's kind of a small role, isn't it? Can't you find some local actor to fill it?"
Peter Jackson: "I think it'd be really cool with Bill Connolly."
WB exec: "Okay, Pete. We'll cut him a check."

*Months later*

Peter Jackson: "So I want you guys to go all-out with the costume and the weapons and the beard for Dain. Just make him look like the baddest dwarf around."
Weta Workshop: "Got it, PJ!"

*Months later*

Peter Jackson: "So we decided to go with a CG Dain instead."
WB exec: ".... We paid Bill Connolly."
Peter Jackson: "Right."
WB exec: "We paid Weta Workshop to create this character using practical materials. People spent months making these things."
Peter Jackson: "Right."
WB exec: "Why did we do that if you were just going to create the damn thing in a computer?"
Peter Jackson: "It's in the spirit of Tolkien."

Nah I'm just not gonna get riled up. Tolkien nerds are easily riled up and it's well known what many think about Jackson's trilogy. It's also known that some like to piss off nerds for sport. A cgi Dain is something that'd piss off nerds who are already pissed about all the cgi orcs in the films. I don't doubt that there are some scenes in battle where a fully cgi Dain may have been used. I never thought there wouldn't be, but a fully cgi Dain all the time I don't buy. Unless Dain is reduced to just some no name dwarf only seen fleetingly in battle in the Theatrical cut which I wouldn't be surprised by. And if that's what he is reduced to in the TC then I couldn't care less about him being cgi all the time.

Which brings me to my biggest fear, that Jackson has cut entire characters, resolution, and development to get the runtime down to 144 minutes. That scares me more than a fully cgi Dain cameo.

Well if the rumor is true, then it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Dain is 100% CGI.

The rumor being that Dain is a purely comedic character and isn't even crowned king at the end of the film.

I have no words for all this. I just. . .

Not getting riled up is different from denying every new thing that comes out on this film based on "logic", which clearly no longer applies to Peter Jackson.

I stopped posting on those boards following the first film's release. Most of them will eat up anything Peter Jackson gives out.

The "Oscar Predictions" Thread was a laugh riot.

The Hobbit movie trilogy is ruined already; at this stage I am more amused by the depths to which PJ has fallen, rather than upset by the results.

Bring it on. A pity with all this CGI around that he can't put a ****ing luscious CGI beard on the bum-fluff "handsome" Dwarf.

I read that review, and I hope it's not true. But the way it's written sounds somewhat genuine which makes me confused.

I can't see why Dain would be CGIed for the life of me. It wouldn't make any sense and I would feel bad for Billy to dedicate his time in the make-up chair only to be replaced by a digital stand-in.

It's like how I felt bad for the Goblin performers wearing the animatronics, who trained for weeks for their 'walk', only to get replaced by CGI characters.

It really shows the half-cooked ideas by Peter when Fili gets absolutely no love from him. He literally has nothing to do.

They remind me so much of Prequel fans it is scary.
