Official 'The Hobbit' Thread - - Part 16

I stopped posting on those boards following the first film's release. Most of them will eat up anything Peter Jackson gives out.

The "Oscar Predictions" Thread was a laugh riot.

Oh god, don't remind me

I still go there every so often but if you say anything negative your immediately considered a troll. But it seems some opinions are slowly starting to change. There are a lot more detractors over there now. But unfortunately the others are just as strong-willed as always.

I read that review, and I hope it's not true. But the way it's written sounds somewhat genuine which makes me confused.

I can't see why Dain would be CGIed for the life of me. It wouldn't make any sense and I would feel bad for Billy to dedicate his time in the make-up chair only to be replaced by a digital stand-in.

It's like how I felt bad for the Goblin performers wearing the animatronics, who trained for weeks for their 'walk', only to get replaced by CGI characters.
Your first problem is looking for logic in Jackson post Two Towers.

Well, I mean, when you've invested all your time on something you'll love, you can also denial all the negatives even when they're valid.

It's tough because I like the community at ToRN. They're good people over all, and more civil than the crowd at The Force.net (again, the Star Wars fan base is fractured.)

ToRN has two kind of people. Those who believe everything Jackson has done is fantastic and those that believe Jackson hasn't done one thing right and has disrespected the works of Tolkien.

I'm in the latter group. I used not to be, but then the Hobbit films came out.

I don't think so. I'm over there and I do not think Jackson has disrespected the works of Tolkien (but he sure as hell sounds as if he is getting there with we are hearing.) nor am I one to praise everything he does. I will call out something if it is bad and praise something if it is good.

5 reasonable people do not equal parity.

I find it absolutely amazing that Jackson made 3 films, and still figured out ways to leave tons of stuff from the book out. I love to say I am right, and I still remember the arguments over the addition of the third film. God was a I right.

As someone who disagreed with you on that point back in the day... I am sad to say you were sooo solo right. :csad:

I'm probably in the purists' camp, but I do give the first two parts of LOTR credit in that I recognise they could have been infinitely worse.

I find it extremely hard to say the same of the Hobbit movies. I like most of the cast. Everything else that could have gone wrong seems to have done so.

I agree that there certainly are those types over there but (though you comment was surely hyperbolic in nature) speaking in such black and white terms is pretty misguided.

On a side note. Here is the first clip and... oh dear.

There's a tracking shot of the armies fighting, and wow, despite being on an open field, it looked the live-action characters were in enclosed area. A GREENSCREEN, if you will.

And what's up with this weird haze? At least put some lube on the lens the real way like in Excalibur or Legend.

There was a time when Michael Fassbender was considered for Bard; I'm glad he didn't get the role. We wouldn't have 12 Years a Slave, X-Men, or Shame if he joined the crew.

That would have been a lot of quality missed. I still have trouble with the fact that Sherlock has basically been delayed for this.

I love the Fellowship movie. I think it hit the right note between appropriate alterations to fit the cinematic medium and faithfulness to the book. The rest of the movies were downhill after that though.

Fellowship is one of my favorite films, and I think it is truly great. I also really, really like The Two Towers. But after that, it is all kinds of downhill imo.

Star Wars is extremely fractured, especially when you consider there is a variation of fans of prequels, originals, cartoons, EU, etc. I've never been to The One Ring, but it's good to know someone out there is positive about Peter Jackson! I certainly am. :D

Although it certainly isn't fair to be attacked due to a difference of opinion. The majority here don't like these Hobbit films, but I certainty don't feel any dislike towards anyone in this thread. In fact many posters I quite like. Now Star Wars forums can be quite a scarier place!

Everytime I see the battle scenes in commercials for this thing I'm like, what in the **** is up with the lighting?

That was very reasonable of you. Far more reasonable then Jackson and Boyens have been with these films. :csad:

Yes me too. But its not just the battle scenes, it's any scene outdoors (outdoors in the film that was shot in the studio... which was most). It seems like it is always sunrise or sunset. Which consequently leads to the real artificial sheen these films have.

I totally dislike Marvolo. I mean, who doesn't? :o

The films could probably look more artificial, but Zod it would be hard to pull off.

CGI was cheaper.
