Thranduil's armour is a pretty design. It's an oddity of movies of this type that named characters rarely have the sense to wear a helmet in battle, no doubt so we know who they are.

the danged Empire mag wasn't at B&N. :( They still had last month's out

It usually takes a little while longer for the US to get it because it's imported. Is the entire issue dedicated to The Hobbit/LOTR? I remember they did something similar in the past when the last Harry Potter movie came out.

give it a week or two... the distributors have to get it on the truck, and the trucks have to drive through this ridiculous weatrher

Is it true Peter Jackson is working on remastered HD and possible 3D versions of LOTR?

Haven't heard anything about it, but I wouldn't be surprised. The EE of FOTR got a new 2K transfer for the 2012 blu-ray release. But TTT and ROTK haven't had new transfers in years. As far as I know the blu-rays of those two movies were made from the same 2K transfers used for the dvds. In short, TTT and ROTK are overdue for new transfers and because 4K blu-ray discs will be on the market starting December 2015 now is the perfect time to start working on new transfers. And doing a 3D rerelease of LOTR in theaters would be a good way to write off the cost of making the new transfers.

I really hope they do work on remastered versions. I own the original DVD copies, one full screen (fellowship of the ring), and two wide screen for the sequels. I have the blu-ray 3D versions of both released hobbit films.

Oh ****, here come the LOTR "Special Editions"

Complete with new scenes featuring the ghost of Boromir, and Darth Vader yelling "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO" before throwing Gollum into the fire.

We already saw the ghost of Boromir in ROTK. It was a potentially buttock-clenching moment, saved by the sensitive and otherwise misused acting of John Noble.

Ah yes, I forgot about that.

John Noble was the bomb as Denethor. I just wish his death made more sense than him running across a bridge and up several flights of stairs and across a courtyard while on fire the entire time.

And Gandalf beating the crap out of him.

At least they had Shadowfax kick him into the fire so that they could cheaply avoid the moral quandary of having Gandalf straight-up murder him.

Yeah, let's make the horse responsible for it... that'll work!

John Noble did a fantastic job acting Denethor. Too bad the job of writing Denethor was so messed up! There was no way a man completely engulfed in flames could run the distance Denethor would have had to run to get all the way from the tombs to the top of Minas Tirith, but PJ wanted to do it because it would "look cool". Never mind that it cheapened his death and wasn't anything like it was in the book - looking cool was the most important thing. Feh.

As far as new versions, I'm still waiting to see the wedding of Faramir and Eowyn. Harry Knowles claimed that he watched them film it and that Eowyn's wedding dress was the most beautiful he'd ever seen. Hope we get to see the scene someday! It was probably going to be in the epilogue that ended up getting cut...

To play Devil's advocate, part of the reasoning was probably that someone burning themselves to death on screen would be far too gruesome and harrowing.

Which is why a big Hollywood studio can never do The Silmarillion.

It was a pretty cool visual. Denethor running down there, engulfed in flame. A fitting end.

And Gandalf beating the crap out of him.

That scene got a huge cheer from the audience I saw it with. It was past 1 AM at the midnight premier and that stubborn ****er was wearing on everyone's nerves. Gandalf should have clubbed him sooner.

I guess that's one mark of a good antagonist when he makes the audience want to throttle him.

And I hate that Boromir ghost vision thing in ROTK. I might would have liked it more if the effect was better done.

I like that his death ends with a fall which also symbolises the fall of his line.

His line doesn't fall; Faramir becomes Prince of Ithilien.

Ugh, I hate that. An audience that understands neither the character of Denethor nor Gandalf.

Funny how the book Gandalf shows pity and mercy to Gollum, Denethor, and Saruman, but in the films he beats the crap out of crazy old men for the kicks of the mass audience.

It was a perfect metaphor for the lowest common denominator.

No but to him it has with Boromir's death. My line has ended, my line has ended!!
