Dozens of subplots introduced and just tossed aside.

Perhaps that is why the sequence where he appears looks so disjointed and weird. Like they were composting footage from somewhere else where it wasn't meant to go.

Seen it twice now. Good, but not great. Quite obvious though that the extended version will be loads better, there's weird holes in the movie and things to be developed better.

Depends how you're using the term. He certainly seemed to believe in a minimum of state apparatus, but he also stated that his preferred form of government was unconstitutional monarchy. I think he was a romantic medievalist like Water Scott or John Ruskin, rather than an active engager in the political debates of his time.

He would probably have encouraged some kind of pact of mutual non-interference between peasantry and aristocracy. He certainly hated social interlopers: see the Sackville-Baggins'.

I wonder what Tolkien thought about Plato's Philosopher Kings? Leaving ruling to experts of knowledge raised and reared for ruling instead of leaving the ruling to just anybody and everybody.
