WB Trying to Educate Moviegoers About 'Hobbit' HFR 3D with FAQ

If you're a regular reader of this site, you probably know what HFR stands for, mostly because we've talked about it plenty before (and even seen demos ourselves). However, the "regular" moviegoer, the casual viewer out there, doesn't know what it means. And it might be even more confusing given everyone is referring to 48FPS, and not the term "High Frame Rate" itself. But as we pointed out back in April, the HFR era is now upon us, and Peter Jackson's The Hobbit is the first film to debut theatrically in HFR 3D. Regal Theatres has launched a HFR page that features a FAQ sheet answering numerous questions about HFR technology.

While this comes from the Regal site, it actually looks to be an official creation from Warner Bros/New Line to promote HFR to consumers. But will it work? Does this answer any questions/concerns you have? Do you need to see a sample yourself before you decide if you're going to go see this in HFR or not? I appreciate that they're trying to inform customers, but this seems like a very lackluster and very unenthusiastic attempt at convincing everyone that this is the next evolution in cinema technology. But maybe that is the big question, and it's up to the audience to decide in December anyway. Here's the official Hobbit HFR 3D FAQs in full:

There's a listing of theaters playing HFR on Regal's website, but AMC and other theatres will also post there lists soon, too. You can find temporary listings of most other theaters on places like Bleeding Cool for now.

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit... J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, being directed by Peter Jackson as three separate movies, is set in Middle-Earth 60 years before Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in a trilogy ten years ago. The films, with screenplays by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson, were shot consecutively in digital 3D using the latest cameras. The Hobbit follows the journey of Bilbo Baggins, played by Martin Freeman, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey arrives in theaters in 3D & 48FPS on December 14th.

Luckily my local theater is showing it in HFR 3D XD at Cinemark.

doesn't look like an of my local cinemas are showing it at 48fps in their gold class sessions. it will only be vmax that will be showing it at 48fps. :(

i'm not sure what to get tickets for now.

I may not see the movie in 48fps because I'm not a huge 3D fan. If I do it will be mainly out of curiosity, to see whether high frame rate is the "future of cinema" or a failed experiment.

Seeing one movie in a new format isn't enough to judge whether the format can succeed or not. If that were the case, we'd still be watching black and white silent film (color and sound where a hard sell) And if you don't like it, it doesn't mean it's a failed experiment, only that you personally didn't like it.

I am interested to see how much the 48fps version makes. I'm all for trying out new things.

Il be seeing it in 2D first then maybe 3D. I doubt my area will get 48fps.

This is true. But first impressions are important and if it doesn't work the reasons why it may spell a certain kind of doom for the format, or at least giving it that initial labeling of the way of the future or a fad. If it fails miserably with this film I don't think many other directors are going to jump at the chance to try it.

Just been skimming around The One Ring forums. Apparently
The Company will encounter/be pursued by orcs prior to the Trollshaws.

Another track from the score has been releases. It is called "Old Friends". Sorry I cant link to it because im on my phone.

One minute previews of the rest of the tracks have also been released.

Glad that peter including more singing.

those one minute previews were amazing. old friends sounds very familiar :)

song of the lonely mountain on disc 2 must be the end credits song because the singer sounds like neil finn.

Love that Old Friends has the Shire theme in it.

I am looking forward to these 3 movies because other then Nolan it seems like Peter Jackson is only people who can give you a movie that is worth your money to go see.
Avengers was a great movie and Spider-Man reboot was ok. But this movie is what people have been missing who enjoyed well written acted and effects driven films.
Nolan gives you that style of film as well.
Both make you feel the world the movie is in is real.

Bard looks pretty much how I expected him to look, but still amazing nonetheless!

For some reason I always pictured Bard being an older actor then Evans. Actaully I think the guy who plays lead character in the tv series Hell On Wheels would have been a great Bard

I need this soundtrack now.

Agreed. Howard Shore is on another level.

He just possesses that classical composing quality that many composers nowadays lack or lost. It's almost like a lost art. :csad:

But it's nice to hear something that wasn't overproduced or filled to the brim with electronics, synthesizers and droning beats for a change (*coughhanszimmercough*). Hearing just classical instruments on a soundtrack is like a breath of fresh air.
