But you seem to miss the disconnect about how that has little to nothing to do with the story. Especially when the One Ring's true nature cannot be discovered until the night of Bilbo's 111th birthday.

But that battle isnt relevant to the hobbit's story. The ring isnt dealt with in the hobbit. They dont even know the ring bilbo finds is the one ring until 60 years later during FOTR. Also that battle took place 3,000 years ago. That battle has no part in the hobbit story at all.

And what needs to be dealt with exactly. The relevant stuff that needed to be covered was covered at the beginning of fotr. If you want more then read the silmarillion or the wikipedia page.

Yes, the Hobbit part 1 will feature a prologue about the dwarves and a key battle in their history.

It is the Battle of Azanulbizar which took place in the valley below the gates of khazad-dûm. The valley was shown in FOTR after the fellowship escaped khazad-dûm. It was the last battle in the War of the Dwarves and the Orcs. Thorin earned the name Oakenshield in the battle.

im watching FOTR right now, and i'm kinda hoping that The Hobbit explains the opening battle scene that we see in FOTR... i would love to see that entire battle in a movie

The battle was explained by Galadriel in the voice over narration during that scene...

I never doubted the crew or Peter. Didnt seem like Peter to let animals get hurt. Of course accidents can happen with animals, but Peter seems like the type to take the utmost care of his crew, actors, AND animals.

With regard to making a movie about the "last alliance of elves and men"...

If the three HOBBIT films are as profitable as the Lord of The Rings movies, I wouldn't be surprised if someone tries to make movies out of The Silmarillion in the near future.

Since the entire movie seems to be a framed narrative (Bilbo relaying the story to Frodo) that would be an easy way to give the back story.

So Frodo knows everything or most about what happens in this trilogy before his adventure begins in FOTR?,Since Frodo is not part of the Hobbit books and his cameo is made for the movie I figured it takes place after ROTK
