I think what is more likely is that Smaug's attack on Lake-town will happen at the start of the 3rd film. The 2nd film could very well end with a shot of Smaug flying towards Lake-town.

Well since the 2nd film is called, "The Desolation of Smaug"...I'm going to guess that's where we see the Smaug story end and the Battle of Five Armies to start in film 3, "There and Back Again".

Yeah, I'm thinking Lake Town and Smaug's Death will be the highlights of TDOS. The Battle of Five Armies will be a highlight of TABA.

I love how the Dwarves were using a piece of a bridge to block the Goblins' attacks. Goblin town should be a lot of fun.

No way. You can't start a film with a climax. Smaug will be defeated in film 2 and the whole Arkenstone / 5 Armies plot will happen in 3.

You can if it sets up the rest of the film. See the Battle of Hoth. It is called starting with a bang.

I personally hate "The Desolation of Smaug" for film 2. I know it refers to the area in front of the Lonely Mountain, but it just feels out of place or even shoehorned in between "An Unexpected Journey" and "There and Back Again". I would've much preferred "The Road Goes Ever On" as the title of film 2.

But that's just my fanboy bickering.

can't wait for the movie. all this behind the scenes stuff makes me even more disappointed with some of my blu rays behind the scenes, or their making of. this is how you hype a film. and there is still so much they haven't showed us yet. the blu ray for this movie is gonna be packed.

If there is a long term narrative then you can start the third film with it. Especially when it is directly responsible for what happens with the rest of the story and can be used as a cliffhanger.

For a movie i don't think Bilbo sleeping through the whole BOFA thing works in a movie so likely that may be changed from the book.
