I know in the book Gollum only features in the riddle scene but does anyone know if he's going to show up in either of the next two movies?

It is possible but I hope not. It was left on the perfect note.

Still number one but had a massive drop compared to the previous flicks.

I think the mixed reviews and the confusion over the framerate hindered some of the box office. It's not a bad film and came in hating it, and came out liking it. Of course I saw it in 24.

Makes me think that WB will limit 48 even more for the next releases. Not completely eliminating it however. Or they'll have to educate the public on it in ads, but again, that's difficult to do. It's not like how you can explain 3D to a person in layman's terms. With 48, you actually have to experience it to get it, IF you're Joe Public.

By educate do you mean "don't watch in this terrible format"? :woot:

BTW this film is going to make more money than Dark Knight Rises, and you can take that to the bank. It's not going to sell as many tickets, but it will make more money. If it doesn't I will eat crow.

I'm calling 65-70M next weekend.

So...

the box office results are disappointing. i'm still looking forward to it though. only 3 days to go.

More does happen. The armies of the White Council drive the Necromancer from Dol Goldur in the same year that Bilbo journeys to the Lonely Mountain. There will no doubt be a battle at Dol Goldur (probably in movie 3).

i think it will probably be in the second movie. having 2 battles in the final movie would be too much. having a helms deep like battle in the second movie would be the best way to go imo.

If the finale of the second film is Smaug, I don't want a battle interfering. That should be the focus. Smaug and Bilbo. That is it.

The next movie is going to have the death of Smaug, so there will be a battle against him involved. The Battle of Five Armies will most likely be the biggest, though.

We don't know that. That could very well be the start of the third film.

It's likely the next movies if we see Gollum we see him getting captured my Mordor and tortured and interrogated by the servants of Sauron.

I really wish they could adapt The Silmarillion into a solid movie.

If the second and third Hobbit perform well then it's more than possible that WB may want to convince Jackson to tackle that.

But The Hobbit numbers have to warrant it and as of now I'm not sure WB would be entirely convinced.

That's true. Although, I hope that is the case.

Good idea, I'd actually love to see that.

I've been thinking about that lately, and I haven't read the Silmarillion so I don't know what it's about. Is it a bunch of mini stories that explores the different ages of Middle Earth?

It would be impossible to make The Silmarillion into one movie. It would be like trying to make the Bible into one movie. I wouldn't mind if they made some of the stories from The Silmarillion into movies, but definitely not a single film.

Gollum showing up again after what we saw in the first film, it would cheapen the whole thing. The other info is already passed on by Gandalf in FotR. Completely unnecessary.

Pretty sure Primal Slayer implied it being a trilogy despite writing movie (singular).

Would people want to see The Silmarillion? The Hobbit so far looks like a step back from the LotR in terms of gross. How many people would really want to see that unfamiliar story told?

It would have the potential to be epic, but it would probably cost more then the first two trilogies combined and would have a smaller starting fanbase.

You'd probably be better off making it a CG movie honestly. You're dealing with a lot of monsters and creatures and demons and angels and all that.

Which is why I wrote it would be entirely dependent on the final gross of The Hobbit trilogy and if WB thinks said gross would warrant an adaptation of The Silmarillion.

Another factor wold be if Jackson would be down to compromise several years of his life for such a task.

High quality animated television show please.

Finally purchased my tickets today for the 26th.
