Paul O'Brien weighs in on the first issue, and it's pretty grim:
Reading this issue, I couldn't help imagining people in the Marvel offices gathering around the pages in horrified silence, with a clock ticking ominously in the background. They must know. They surely can't have deluded themselves into thinking this is any good.

Ultimates 3 is bad, very bad. I'd go so far as to say it's shockingly incompetent. Even after suffering through "Evolution", I was still prepared to regard that as a weird anomaly from an experienced writer. I read this thing, and then I sat there in silent disbelief.

meh, first issue wasnt very good, but I'm still pretty optimistic about it. the second issue should hopefully be better and explain things.

The problem people have with this issue is, unfortunately, unsurprising.

It's the same thing that happened with Loeb's arc on Wolverine, which I still contest was a good story, intelligent, and entertaining.

"Boohoohoo, wah wah wah, it doesn't make sense right away from the start!"

Yeah, that's right. Apparently most readers now want everything given to them on a nice, shiny silver platter right away, at the get-go, so they can follow it like it's a pretty little easily-followed line.

...Except not all writers write like that anymore, and it's fairly obvious that Loeb is in a phase where he's not writing in a necessarily linear or linear-clarification manner.

Not that anyone will give it a fair shot, anyway.

Oh well, it was a fine, entertaining read. Jarring, yes, but note the lack of judgments until the story has completed. And the art was freakin' great.

I agree.

The main critiques I am seeing are because things aren't explained - EVERY LITTLE THING isn't explained in the first issue... oh no... what will we do? Seriously though guys, its a 5 issue arc for a reason, if it was supposed to all be told in 1 issue it would be stand alone.

There's the Spoons I love so much.

Come here, my past-life brother.

I felt Loeb should have taken the Corporate Superheroes route. I mean, they've tackled the American Super Imperialism thing, now is the time to take it to the Corporate fat cats. Stark funds the Ultimates and therefore, runs them technically. Stark has shareholders, evil shareholder Justin Hammer or somebody takes control of the company, takes control of the Ultimates. The rest writes itself. People quit, some stay for the fat paycheck, Rival team started up, blah blah blah, Stark butt rapes Hammer, takes control of company back, then just give the book to Ellis for two more volumes or whatever.

Just read #1. Loved the story and the art; Ultimate universe haters be damned :o

I went in with low expectations and was pretty entertained.I wouldn't say I loved it,but it's far from the "trash" people are calling it.

The Ultimates 2 HC is just sitting here in front of me still wrapped up.Damn finals keeping me occupied.

See, PJ, this is why I only mostly love you.

But Spoons should buy the Ultimates 2 hardcover, yes, and he should read Iron and the Maiden too.

All of you should.

Don't do the whole list, just some examples.

Okay. These comics should be purchased before ever purchasing an Ultimate book:

But aren't they kinda missing the main star? Doesn't that just prove he'll be back?
