Can someone just explain why everyone is freaking out so hardcore over this film?
It's not like we havent had giant monsters and giant robot films before so what is so different about this?

it has a lot of money and marketing and a very capable director. I for one do not want it turning out like a Michael Bay or Roland Emmerich film. I dont want another Godzilla 98 and this looks very different and overall much more promising. Yes there have been Japanese films like this, which are the inspiration but not with this level and scale of production. Del Toro is very passionate about this I feel and will not screw it up like what has come in the past. That is why I and other people are very excited.

Giant monsters and giant robots in the same movie together.

there has been Iron man movies, superman movies, wolverine movies, and star trek movies before, but for some reason I'm excited to see those as well.

Awesome is Awesome. Lets leave it at that and not get upset that we hope the film is awesome.

Del Toro is a fan of Lovecraft; I think he'll be able to add a Lovecraftian element of mystery and fear to the Kaiju. The closest I've seen to Sci-Fi is the Hellboy movies, but those show he does well with character interactions and relationships. That's why I am excited for this movie.

One of those fanboys wrote similar ****s about Green Lantern so...? :whatever:

Not to crap on Mr. Robert Meyer Burnett, but his Twitter reaction to Pacific Rim seems very similar to his Twitter reaction to Green Lantern at the same 3-month out studio showcase..

"GREEN LANTERN f***ing ROCKED. The 3D was AWESOME. As a lifelong DC fan, the opening ten minutes made me squeal like schoolgirl."

"Believe it. The first ten minutes will make you believe. The 3D is also outstanding."

"GREEN LANTERN was terrific fun. The fact that it works at all is a miracle, but it really does cook. The first ten minutes sold me."

"The 3D in the opening ten minutes is wonderful. But YOU MUST see it with polarized glasses. The color is great."

"It’s not campy at all. The humor is earned. And Mark Strong as Sinestro was AWESOME"

"I LOVED GREEN LANTERN. Don’t know why, but it kinda’ felt like THE LAST STARFIGHTER. I know…”Huh?!? What?!?”"

For what it's worth, I went to a screening yesterday, and loved it. I haven't read the script yet, so I don't know how much has changed, but the action was absolutely incredible, and the greatest strength of the film was the pacing. There was never a dull moment, and aside from maybe two strange moments in the film, it was very fluid and enjoyable. There were a fair amount of cliche lines, Charlie Hunnam was so-so(my friends thought he was terrible, so maybe I was just easier on him), and Charlie Day was awesome as always. It's a big crowd movie. The big WOW moments play really well, and are extremely satisfying.

I don't know how they would manage to plan a sequel with how the movie ends, but I asked Del Toro after the screening, and he says he has a really great idea....assuming the movie does well.

Kaiju/robot films are more of a Japanese staple. We don't really have robots versus monsters in Hollywood, and this is the movie to bring it to America.

Now that's some great news. :applaud

Eh, all these movies are blending together for me now. I can't tell them apart. I'll see it, but it feels like the typical Transformers/Battleship/Avengers/Cowboys and Aliens/the-list-goes-on type of thing.

Robert's a great guy. I trust his taste despite my great trepidation against Pacific Rim. And he acknowledged upfront he made similar early raves on Green Lantern. As long as one can avoid the name-calling (as I've seen elsewhere), nothing wrong with not believing him and/or questioning his tastes.

I'll say what I always say in these situations; seeing something this early before everybody else can sometimes cloud the judgement of the viewer. It's happened to me. That being said, RMB and others, might have genuinely liked it. I feel like you need to wait a couple days for things to sink in sometimes though.

Are you sworn to secrecy? Or can you shed some spoilers in a PM? I got some burning questions.

I didn't sign anything, so I can answer whatever you want in spoilers...? Even GDT was encouraging people to say what they thought, so yeah, ask away!

Were there eastereggs or nods to animes like Gundam or Evangelion?

Do we get to see [BLACKOUT]what's on the other side of the portal that the Kaiju are coming out of?[/BLACKOUT]

Was Coyote Tango in the movie? What was the final kaiju like? Did Gyspy Danger use its plasma caster? Where was it located? I basically want to know everything about the kaiju.

I can understand why someone wouldn't be automatically smitten. I like Charlie but even on SoA he doesn't display the greatest range.

i would understand if it was june and WB was positive about the movie. but i dont think the studio would screen the movie in march with no 5 million contract.

So you're calling BS?

There wasn't anything I could particularly think of that directly references animes like that, but there were clear homages as to be expected.
Like a few of the Jaegers had a definite Evangelion feel. There is one particular moment that also seems pulled from an anime: the moment when they first reveal the Gipsy Danger Sword, it was my favorite moment of the film. Otherwise, I can't think of any. The Jaegers do function similarly to G Gundam, in that every damage done to the Jaeger damages the pilots accordingly. So if an arm is torn off, they feel all the pain
I'll ask some of my friends if they noticed anything I didn't.

Yeah, it gets sprinkled throughout the film when Charlie Day's character "drifts" with the Kaiju brain, and the end scene takes place inside it

I think so. I don't remember ever hearing them refer to it as Coyote Tango, but I believe that's the Striker Jaeger. Gipsy Danger uses the Plasma Caster a lot, actually. It's in the very first scene, and it's kind of the go-to weapon throughout the film. It's a cannon that the hand transforms into.

As for the Kaiju,
There's a very good variation on each one. The final Kaiju is big and awesome, but he's kinda short-lived, to be honest. I remember much more of the rest of the Kaiju. They categorize them by size and power, so the final Kaiju is a "category 5", the only one of that type that they see. The Kaiju have a very Del-toro esque quality to them, specifically like some of the Hellboy 2 monsters. There are some with razor sharp snouts that tear through Jaegers, some that spit acid, some that have glowing wings, some that send out EMPs, etc.

Not sure if that helps, but if you want me to elaborate or better explain, just let me know!

If you don't believe that I saw it, I'm not going to argue with you. But they definitely had screenings, that much is just a fact. I think the studio might not know how to market it, or they need to know what to cut and what to keep. Honestly, it could use with lengthening one scene, and trimming another, but it was VERY surprising how finished the film is. Even the special effects (aside from like 3 textureless, 15 second shots and some grainy green screen which most people didn't notice) were fantastic looking.

Did they have any scenes that took place in Japan, rather than China/Hong Kong?

Can you describe the battles? And would you say the action is some of the hugest you've seen in a movie?

Also, what weapons do you remember the Jaegers having?
