Pacific Rim - Part 2

Is it necessarily about Aliens? Why name an adult male scientist after a young girl?

Why not? It's not definitely an Aliens tribute, but seeing as GDT is a major fanboy, it wouldn't surprise me, that's all.

I've got no problem with the character names. Hell there's a movie were people are called Luke Skywalker and Han Solo.

It's hard to come up with interesting names these days, so I applaude 'Pac Rim' for trying.

These days, we get names like 'Alex Hopper' (Battleship) or something generic like that.

I haven't paid one bit of attention to the names at all. They're names...

I guess in the end they are n't by any order of magnitude any more or less out there than Skywalker or Solo. The names are on the nose for those characters, and in PAC RIM we have a character named Pentacost giving inspirational sermons... I mean speeches, and a character named Newt who is shown scurrying from giant creatures. I guess I give SW a pass the same way I would certain Sword and Sorcery stories' characters. It's just that to me those stories take place in a total fantasy world, with and alternate history to our own. PAC RIM is supposed to be a version close to our world. I mean, imagine if you woke up on day and learned that the person who had just won the record setting powerball lottery was named Penny McMoney. I'd be like, "That's a little too on the nose God.... Please don't hit me with lightning!"

The names are fine. Now..I think now you're overthinking it...and trust me, I'm a reasonable guy.

i like those kind of names. i think its smart world building. and Del Toro is creating a detailed unique world.

I probably wouldn't name my kid after them since it would be a magnet for getting the **** kicked out them, but hey.

too bad we didn't get to see a jaeger armor from Iron Man. Maybe soon.

My enthusiasm for PR has certainly increased with the most recent trailers. Idris Elba is an excellent actor but I don't know what it is about his delivery of the "we are cancelling the apocalypse" line but I cringe every time I hear that line

They want it to be something akin to 300's "This is madness" or "Tonight we dine in hell". However, its not working quite that well, hopefully better in context.

Not to mention that the take you see in a trailer isn't always the one you'll see in the film.

I seriously hope they are playing these in theaters cause I think they would garner a lot more interest than the trailers for the GA. I mean if this comes in behind Grown Ups 2 for the weekend then....
